Community Tasting Notes (4) Avg Score: 95 points

  • Tasted double blind, from magnum. The highlight is the classic, airy structure, and texture. Although all the signature Nebbiolo aromas were there, I found it a bit too lean aromatic wise and with not enough fruit sweetness to reach the 95+ pts category. Still, this was very pleasant to drink and easily 93/94pts.

TN: Dark berries and a medicinal, strong herbal note on the nose. On the palate there is a strong minty note, red berries, roses and a tary minerality. There is a note there that disturbs the picture - at first TCA like scents but luckily, it completely blew off with time. Very fine structure, good acidity, very airy texture. Very light.

Decanting: Only quickly double decanted two hours before drinking. Then again decanted and followed over an 30+ minutes. This needs one or the other hour in the decanter.

  • tasted blind, out of magnum!

on the nose rather closed, not very expressive, but got better with time, raw, and more character than the cepparello 09 we just had before. not so artificial and more honest. you can feel and sense the nebbiolo grape in its purest form. this is more my style than he cepparello..
red berries all the way, no oak
very lineal and sharp, really well done, this has everything of a great traditional barolo.

deep and honest on the palate this has so much acidity and high tannins. and this is sooooo much fun. cant get enough from this wine… i have to admit i am a rinaldi-fanboy, but this such a nice drinkflow, so deeply layered (depth not width). this is outstanding.

as it got revealed we all were surprised that it was that old, but of course from the magnum the wine ages more slowly.

  • Tasted blind as part of a small Sangiovese vs Nebbiolo event. From Mg, decanted briefly. Initially somewhat musty, hence would leave enough time for this to breath a bit. A rather dark aroma profile with lots of smoke, scorched earth and black coffee. But there is still a well-defined core of red berry fruit with additions of rose water after a while. On the palate still loads of acidity and tannin, still pretty mouthcoating and in fact coarse. In the end, ok balance but will likely need several more years to fully integrate.

  • - from magnum, decanted 1h.
    - At the beginning closed in the nose, sandy and stony, not super tertiary, red fruity, wild cherries, herbaceous, roses. Also has dark fruity aromas, especially with time these come and go.
    - In the mouth high acidity, red fruity, but still very present tannins, which are still too pronounced at the moment. Very fresh and direct but tannins are too high, a bit grainy. One notices the traditional art of making wines with little wood influence. It is deep and you have to take a lot of time to understand this wine.
    - This Rinaldi (without indicating a particular terroir, by the way) is just not quite on the peak and at the beginning a bit disappointing for this great vintage in Piedmont. With time, the wine opens up more and more and becomes accessible. It is simply a raw and honest Barolo. Should definitely be decanted for 3 hours (especially from the magnum). Then it is really fun and you want to drink more and more!
    - 92 points at the beginning, which then develops into 95 points.
