  • Too often a wine is not properly stored throughout its life, and because of that, reviews of a wine indicate it has not aged well or can't age well. Not this wine!! I recently purchased two bottles of this 2001 from Spectrum auctions for $28 per bottle, and it was readily apparent that this wine was loved, nurtured and stored throughout its life in a temperature controlled cellar. I would say the stage of this wine is at the beginning of it's decline, at the top of the drinking curve. Cork was a little dry, but came out in tact. Some sediment was encased inside the bottle towards the top, showing that the wine must have rested on its side for over a decade, as the eventual transport of the wine did not stir up the sediment. I did not decant, as the initial pour showed gorgeous red fruits, some pine like forest floor aromas that faded after about 3 minutes. The fruit held up in the glass so that it never oxidized. No tertiary characteristics were showing. Wine had nice balance, not over ripe or hot. The blend of all Sonoma grapes was 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc; alcohol was 13.5%. If you can find a properly stored needle in the haystack wine like this for 60 bucks or less, BUY IT. I sense that there are other age worthy gems by Schug out there, and I will certainly seek out some old Schugs. Bravo to Schug winery and the wine maker! Drinking window at up to 2025 for properly stored bottles.

  • Aged better than expected. Drinking well now, wouldn't hold onto it much longer as the fruit is starting to fade. The large format really helped this wine mature.
