On day one almost exploding with kirsch, very much in the domaine-style, that I know from long ago. It bears the vintage-marks, bright, intense minerality (guessed 2001 right away). On day 2 the kirsch is bit more relaxed, the wine broadens a bit towards a more classical neuf. No hurry to drink this. #Bagnols-en-Fôret

On the nose and palate, red and black cherries, mixed red berries and currants, earthy minerality, funk, mocha and a light touch of garrigue. Medium to dark reddish brown, medium bodied, medium legs. Tannins and acidity somewhere between totally integrated and completely gone, no heat. Medium complexity, light intensity and persistence. This was the transition wine between the whites and the big reds, and surprisingly, from the tasting preferences of this group, the only non-US red wine other than the DF. I love CdPs and really like the late ‘90s-early ‘00s era (I’ve had several notable Clos des Papes and Pegaus from this period in the past 2 years), but this wine was for me, with all due respect to soyhead’s differing experience, tired out, more consistent with what prior tasters found. An enjoyable drink still, it would have been interesting to have a couple of sips with the lamb to see if there was still enough structure present to make it a food complement, but while an easy sipper, for me, there was, as Ms. Stein said of the city I passed through on BART on my way to the tasting, no there there, whether this was once more full throttle or otherwise. Drink now, or put it into the Cruset with the pot roast and veggies. 88-89 if scoring.

Delightful. Nose is still vibrant and clear, notes of lavender and blueberry, violets and coffee grounds or wet earth. Forest floor and bramble on the front palette. The Grenache is really present in the finish. For 20 years old, a very nice drink.

Alcova, WY 2023. Questionable on opening, but some funk blew off after about 45 minutes of air, then thoroughly enjoyable. Drink now.
