Quite pretty and suave. More polished and oaky than the same vintage LGB and LPS, therefore, somewhat less appealing than those wines. Likely to peak by 2030.

High quality fruit, treated with higher oak than the LPS and LGB offerings; as such, in this vintage, as with several others, less striking than the more pocket book friendly labels. This aside, seductively delightful in all regards. Likely to evolve for the next five to seven years. Improvement seems possible.

Tasted outdoors at the winery tasting room. This cuvée is made from the best barrels from the Le Puits Sec Vineyard in front of the winery. Like the LPS bottling, this was made from a significant amount of own-rooted, mostly Pommard clone Pinot Noir. The barrels chosen equate to about 25% new French oak in its aging. Depending on style preferences this could easily go either a point lower or higher than the other. In my case, less oak is more so I scored this a point lower for what it's worth. This wine is a bit rounder with a broader mouth feel and distinct vanilla notes (from the oak) but also nicely red cherry and pomegranate fruited, perhaps just a touch darker than the other cuvée. The finish is quite long. Very nice wine at a very fair price.

"2021 Pinot Noir Cuvée J (certified organically grown) $64.00/btl One of the greatest characteristics Russ found in our proprietary yeast that he “isolated” from a bottle of 1986 Jayer Echezeaux is the velvety texture it imparts on the wines. While we use that yeast in every Pinot Noir we make, the texture it imparts is particularly notable in this wine. The 6 barrels selected from Le Puits Sec display a beautiful balance of elegance while also concentration and power. Bright red berries, rhubarb, pomegranite molasses, and plum-frangipane tart that finishes with great length and haunting flowers. 148 cases produced."
