  First night: Drank a glass through Vinturi, remained quite closed (don't think Vinturi works that well on very complex wines like this). Then decanted half a bottle over 2 hours and poured the other half back into the cleaned bottle and vacced the bottle so that oxidisation would be minimal. Over the evening it opened up giving the classic garrigue and barnyard notes, neither of which were overpowering, nice balance.
  
  Second night: Reopened the vacced bottle and what little oxygen that had been in the wine overnight had done it's job. Now much more open, even some floral notes which had been missing the previous night but the barnyard was most prominent.
  
  A good wine but not spectacular. 2006 wasn't a fantastic vintage in the southern Rhone but wasn't bad either. I paid £45 duty paid, which seems very cheap for Grenaches de Pierre. So considering the label this was good value but overall I think i've seen better QPR at the ~£30 'tradition' level of CDP.

  Umami bomb. Something different. This is not a typical CdP but special nonetheless. Balsamic, soy notes, roast meats, maybe a tiny bit of olives. Worth seeking out.

  As I had wanted to try something from Rhone, given the cold weather, settled for this bottle with a pal. Nose was quite muted, then barnyard then improved, as is what usually happens in my experience of pleasant CdPs. Nose of spice, soy sauce, hoisin, with some dark fruit candy (?) On the palate, it was sensual, dense, velvety, sweet, with umami flavours. Paired really well with Cantonese style roast duck. A very enjoyable bottle, probably at its peak?

  The nose was incredibly dark, rich and earthy, showing baked plum, crushed black cherry, balsamic wood, sweet tobacco, classic garrigue, hints of animal musk and moist soil tones. On the palate, I found a silky Autumnal expression, complemented by ripe blackberry, cherry and plum, with black licorice, sweet spice, more balsamics, hints of coffee rind, brown spice, minerals and hints of mushroom. The finish was long, with zesty spice and residual acids making the mouth water, as saturating black cherry and minerals lingered long. This is a full-throttle, fruit-forward and massively textural wine, yet it maintains amazing balance.
