  • Bottle #6 of 6. This bottle the best of all. Bright light yellow color. Smells and tastes like a highly extracted, very oaky and modern Cali Chard. Not my style.

  • Bottle #5 of 6. Such bottle variation with this wine. Tracked this bottle over 4 nights - sour fruited, but does show some degree of Chablis-like characteristics. None of the huge, oaky, extracted mess of previous bottles. Barely adequate, and very disappointing, especially in light of the other bottles from this half case. Poor value. Drink up.

  • Bottle #4 of 6. This doesn't resemble anything close to a Chablis. Huge and extracted, this is a Parkerized beast. Yuk. No saline, no cut, no mineral, big flabby Rombaueresque chardonnay, without even that degree of deliciousness. Soft and flabby, smoky, dirty, borderline oxidized. Bleh. On its way down, drink up. One of my worst purchases ever.

  • This is a modern styled Chablis. It's a big wine with generous fruit and also quite ripe. There is an oily texture but the wine maintains precision and freshness. The flavor is candied lemon and stone fruits. Golden color and no signs of pre-mox. I must say I enjoyed this despite its lack of Chablis typicity.

  • Wow. Totally different from last bottle, which in retrospect must have been off. This is big, bright, detailed, lemon-laden and very delicious. Could use a bit more Chablis-like notes, as this is more in a Rombauer Chardonnay style, but it is really extraordinarily good. Oak-phobes might stay away, as this is seriously laden, though the oak is bright and tasty. Great finish, and I wonder what this will do in seven years. Outstanding, though this may need time for the oak to dissipate, even though the fruit is spectacular now. 93pts with upside if the oak integrates and the fruit hangs on, with maybe a couple points detracted for its lack of true "Chablis-ness"
    And now, the next night, this is totally funky, cheesy, smoky, dirty, subdued, oaky, bordering on oxidized. A very confounding, and actually a bit frustrating, wine. We'll see if my remaining 4 bottles teach me something here, or if this is plonk. How did this go from crisp brilliance to muddy swill overnight? Rating deferred.......

    (Le CLOS Chablisienne) 2005 Grand Cru Dear Friends, It seems Chablis is not dead, at least from the response to last week’s La Chablisienne offer - here are two more, the crown jewels in their portfolio. I first became intrigued with La Chablisienne’s 2005 Preuses and Le Clos at a comparative vineyard tasting in Burgundy last summer and they continue to gain in strength. I was invited to a private event where all of the known wines from each vineyard were poured (along with Montmains and Vaillons) and both of these were in my top two. You can use your imagination but that means Raveneau, Dauvissat, Fevre (and others) were ranked below them. The differences in each vineyard were fairly staggering as each winery holds a certain segment of fruit that can be far different than the other (much like Batard or Chevalier where it matters greatly where in the topography the fruit is from). As an example, La Chablisienne's Preuses holding is considered the best parcel in the vineyard, especially in a new global-warming Burgundy. It is far cooler than the vines in the middle or bottom and in a vintage like 2005, you get the best of both worlds - cool tone but ripe, perfect fruit. It is an outstanding wine. The Les Clos goes without saying. If you are buying high-end white Burgundy, Chablis remains the top spot for well-priced Grand Cru fruit and both of these are very hard to find (unlike Fevre or something mass distributed). If a $50-70 wine can be a bargain, both of these qualify with room to spare.
