  • I was quite impressed with the performance of this bottle and I actually had very little hope for it still being drinkable :-)
To be fair, it was more than drinkable and overall a very interesting wine at this stage.
It was certainly developed, showing wet earth and leaves but it certainly also still had plenty of fruit left. Compared to when I tasted it while young, it had taken on a lot more fruit depth and weight and it just seemed like a more complete wine. There was a touch of sweetness to it but also a lovely acidity. I was impressed!

  • P&P. exuberant nose, very Pinot Noir, but with a great dose of complexity and freshness. really woww. Red and dark fruits, smoke, fat (especially the second day), spices. the palate evolved quite a bit. first it was pretty fresh and long, at one point it collapsed and became thin. the second day, it got back on its feet, with a very good balance, fresh and round. if only the palate was of the same quality as the nose. very enjoyable wine though.

  • Better the next day when acidity showed up to improve balance, rather flat character, muted nose, and short after taste, but drinkable, not too bad, I would value it between high teen to low twenty dollars.

  • New Zealand doing its best representation of Burgundy. Medium garnet in color with separation at the rim showing its age. Intense yet elegant tertiary notes of damp earth, grilled meats, and leather interlaced with sweet red berries. Smooth, soft palate with great acidity and mellowed out tannins. A little thin on the mid palate and short finish.

(RIPPON VINEYARD Pinot Noir) Pinot Noir Dear Friends, A few months ago, during the height of the economic meltdown, my friend (who is an importer in Paris), called me to lament the poor consumer confidence in France and the difficult state of the wine trade in Europe. He complained about too many wines he had ready to ship overseas (to France) from as far away as Argentina and Australia. He also had a parcel of wine from New Zealand, labeled and ready to ship to Paris but still in a cooling warehouse in Blenheim, NZ - he just didn't think there was room (or funds) to support them. He asked if I wanted his allocation (albeit, labeled for the French market) as it was a much easier trip from the South Island to Seattle than France. Why not? The parcel in question contained some of the most difficult wines in New Zealand to source and they were all directly from the winery cellars. So, instead of sending them to Paris, he sent them to us - they've finally arrived and based on the samples I tasted yesterday, all are stunning examples of the varietal, among the finest renditions of the grape outside of Beaune. The only caveat? All three wines are EXTREMELY LIMITED - his allocation was very small (New Zealand Pinot Noir is probably something of an oddity in France). Here goes... Terravin I've been trying to source the wine from Terravin for almost a year so, in some way, this was a stroke of luck. The results from this winery are considered among a handful of the most limited and desirable Pinot Noirs being produced in NZ and the justification is in the bottle. I've tasted this set on one other occasion (from stock sent to Australia) and it was obvious this was a major contender (the reviews speak for themselves). I hesitate to extol any further virtue on either of these as the quantities are just too small (and, I wouldn't mind keeping some for my own experimentation): 2005 Terravin Pinot Noir (Omaka Valley) This is a ridiculous value in Pinot Noir - that about sums it up: 2005 Terravin Pinot Noir "Hillside" (Omaka Valley) The 2005 Hillside is very difficult to source outside of New Zealand - there's a reason (it's fabulous, far better than the 2004 Hillside). A wine to be studied by those in the US attempting to bridge the old world/new world gap. Think Thomas of Oregon meets the Omaka Valley with stunning levels of Pinot Noir purity. This wine will make people stand up and take notice for the elegance and power aligned in the same glass vessel. There's something about the red-sap texture of this wine that keeps the taster coming back again and again: Rippon Vineyard There's not much to say about Rippon that hasn't already been penned. Mysterious and incredibly pure in varietal tone, this is the undeniable terroir of Central Otago that has been lost on many of the new entrants in the region. If you've been searching for the magic in NZ, this is a very good place to expand your knowledge and your mind. left to aerate for several hours, this wine delivers its world-class heritage without forcing a thing (this is not the Jeunesse): 2006 Rippon Vineyard Pinot Noir (Central Otago) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA NZ7566 NZ7555 NZ7544
