  • This is holding up very nicely with fresh (enough) red fruit, bits of earth and subtle background spice. Everything in harmony, and no fear of its falling apart.

  • As I sit here preparing to type this tasting note I realize that it is a bit of a double edged sword for me. If I type what I think and people listen it will become more of a struggle to find these wines in the secondary market, but truth is paramount. As with other 2002's that I've had there still is no sign of age with this wine.

In the glass it is a lovely ruby red at the edge of the glass with a black plum color at the core. The purity of the fruit on the nose is almost difficult to put to words, there are obvious and vivid tones of freshly picked raspberries, bing cherries, strawberry rhubarb pie, and a light hint of oak that is so subtle that it could easily be missed. In the mouth flavors of strawberries lead into a melange of red fruits that are supported in the mid-palate by great acidity and tannin balance that causes the mouth to salivate in preparation for the next bite of food as a lingering note of cola persists along the medium length finish.

After more than 90 minutes in the decanter and having had plenty of time to open up the wine now offers up scents of freshly tilled earth, mushrooms, granite, and smoke. This is truly a wine of place, or as the French like to call it terroir. If...I had another bottle I would not be touching it for 2-3 years. While it is a wonderful wine now, I believe this still has room to improve with time sideways.

  • I have liked this more since release than when barrel sampled last spring. Concentrated black cherry on nose, then same black cherry and boysenberry on palate. Would like a little more spice, but think some might evolve with a couple more years in bottle. Good acids and tannins, this is starting to drink nicely but should get better in a few more years. Two bottles this summer with consistent notes.

  • Memorial Day Weekend in Willamette; 5/24/2003-5/26/2003 (Willamette Valley OR): Barrel tasting at winery. Very dark fruit, mostly blackberry, then even some blueberry. Not much floral, ok spice, good acidity. Needs time, 2006 or later but I preferred some of the other Patty Green cuvees today for overall balance and expression of Pinot Noir fruit.
