  • Winemaker Blair Walter said of his 2007 pinot noirs: "[They] are wines of unmatched concentration and rich complexity without losing any purity or finesse. They combine the ripeness of the 06’s with the concentration of the 05’s adding a certain extra magic that is unique to this vintage. In short we see them as landmark wines". Whole bunch around 32%; new oak around 26%; alcohol 14% ABV. Drunk over three evenings, during which it did not change. Under screwcap, still surprisingly youthful-looking ruby with only some clearing at the rim. Rich, full fruit on the nose. Dark cherries and black plums with touches of thyme, cedar and cinnamon. Nascent dark rose florals. A sweet, juicy entry - surprising for a Calvert - silky, full and very ripe. Plums, cherries, red liquorice and cherry cola. Concentrated, rounded and perhaps a little soft. Lower acid, perhaps more Cornish Point than Calvert. Overall, I think modern Calverts are probably better, but this is still an impressive NZ pinot. Drink soon, but, under its screwcap, it should drink in this style to at least 2027. Hard to score, 92+

  • I used to sell this wine for Grand Vin. I remember it being amazing. This wine didn't disappoint, even at 14 years of age.

Color. Thick garnet red, touch of brick.

Nose. Dr Pepper, cola, stewed cherries, luxardo cherry, tobacco spices, cedar. The list is endless.

Palate. Bracing acidity, ripe cherries, plum skins, tart bing cherries, blood orange, some day old cola.

This is one of those wines that will haunt me. Every time I find an old central Otago Pinot Noir, I will likely buy it.

For 45 bucks on winebid this wine over delivers.

  • Silky smooth complex. Day 2 fading, eathy, mulch. Drink while fresh. Still a beautiful wine on day 1

  • This wine is wow. Screw cap. Purchased at the winery in 2008. Showing no ill effects of aging, just flavor intensity and complexity. Focused wild strawberry, stewed cherry, toasted sage, baking spice. Can I say wow again?

  • Burgundy nose, good balance, nice balance of fruit and minerality. Fruit just slightly stewed or muddled, and I might be a little late drinking this, but enjoyable nonetheless.
