  • In the illustrious tapestry of the wine world, the 1989 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon stands as a masterful opus, a testament to the fusion of artistry and terroir. It transcends mere viniculture, evoking emotions and memories that resonate deeply within the chambers of the heart. To me—a connoisseur of refined tastes, a musician seeking harmony in every note, and an adventurer enamored with life's diverse experiences—this vintage represents an unforgettable chapter in my personal narrative.

As a member of upper society, I have been privy to the most exquisite of libations, yet few possess the captivating allure of this Heitz masterpiece. From the moment the cork surrenders to the corkscrew's gentle persuasion, an aura of sophistication permeates the air. The crimson elixir cascades into the glass, a velvety symphony of garnet hues that glimmers with a timeless elegance.

The nose is a melodic crescendo, unveiling a bouquet of dark cherries, black currants, and hints of cedar. Layers of fragrances dance together, reminiscent of an intricate musical composition, each note harmonizing seamlessly with the next. A whisper of vanilla and subtle spices lingers, weaving a tale of sophistication and complexity.

But it is upon the palate where this vintage transcends description. As the liquid elixir graces my lips, memories cascade forth. In 1988, a winter at Heitz intertwined with a love affair that set my soul ablaze. The taste of this 1989 vintage awakens those dormant emotions, reminiscent of the sweetness of her lips—soft, tender, and unforgettable. It is as if the wine itself holds within its depths the echoes of that passionate liaison, encapsulating moments of sheer bliss and ardor.

The wine's structure is impeccable, a finely tuned composition that balances power and grace. Silky tannins embrace the tongue, a testament to the careful nurturing this wine received over the years. It caresses the palate with finesse, a lingering reminder of the craftsmanship and dedication invested in its creation.

As a musician, I find parallels between the symphonic complexity of this vintage and the compositions that resonate within me. The interplay of fruit and oak is akin to a well-orchestrated melody, each sip a movement in a grand opus. The symphony of flavors evolves—a symposium of ripe berries, a touch of earthiness, and whispers of dark chocolate that linger on the palate, each note resonating in perfect harmony.

But this vintage speaks to more than just refined palates and artistic sensibilities. It beckons to the adventurer in me, enticing with its enigmatic allure. Each sip unveils a new layer, an uncharted territory waiting to be explored. Like life's myriad experiences, this wine unfolds in a series of revelations, inviting contemplation and discovery with every taste.

In the realm of wine, the 1989 Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon stands as a testament to the extraordinary. It transcends mere liquid indulgence, encapsulating emotions, memories, and experiences within its ruby depths. It is an embodiment of passion, craftsmanship, and the sheer magnificence of life's most profound moments—a vintage that beckons the soul to embark on a journey of sensory delight and emotional resonance.

As I raise my glass to this exceptional creation, I am reminded once more of that winter at Heitz in 1988 and the intoxicating allure of a love affair that mirrored the sweetness of this exquisite wine. For in this 1989 vintage, I find not just a libation, but a cherished memoir—a symphony in a bottle, forever etched in the corridors of my memory.

NOTE TO SELF: ALMOST A POP AND POUR. EACH GLASS WAS FUNK FOR 20 MINS THEN HEAVEN

  • Beautiful Martha - drinking great right now with lovely secondaries and tertiaries but the fruit is still there too. Opened 90 mins before dinner and decanted about 45 mins before we sat down; initial slight funk blew off quickly. Definitely got the signature eucalyptus note. Would have guessed a slightly later vintage from overall freshness. Would definitely seek out more!

  • With Tritip…..
Followed over 4 hours, great depth good color no bricking.
No classic Mint but lots of forest floor, dark berry, darker milk chocolate and potpourri . Nose fairly shut.
Seems like it might go a bit longer but will probably not improve. Better without food.

  • I will mirror the TN by the user below. This wine is just singing and beautiful. Long lingering taste, balanced, just the right amount of fruit, leather, cassis and smoke. Although the wine is excellent now, it can age further. I will seek more of this.

  • Decanted for one hour. Lovely classically styled cabernet. Beautiful full nose of plum, red cherry and herbs. The wine is at a perfect moment of maturation. There is still vigorous blackberry and cherry fruit, but it’s nicely complemented by leather and smoke elements. Full bodied with a long finish but impeccably balanced.
