50 year old Chianti. I figured this one would be dead, and I was right. Light brown in color and smelled like bad vinegar. Fun to try a birth year wine though.

Vintage Pairs 2010 (Alba, London): Blind. Huge nose of VA initially. Acetone. Good acidity. Fruit fading albeit still sweet. Mid garnet. Really interesting abd quite lovely. ****

Bought on a punt at a pre-Christmas sale. Nice price. Very reliable merchant which has probably been storing this since the off. Good level for a wine of this age: only just below the bottom of the neck. Has thrown only very little sediment: more cloudly than sludgy. Clear, bright red, tinged with ermine; orange to salmon-pink towards rim. Classic dusty, mineral Sangiovese nose. Quite rich and exotic (hints of Ch. Musar?); a bit of barnyard. Still lively on the palate, with some good grip, a nice mouthfeel, some muddy tannins and juicy acidity; medium weight but mouthfilling. Long, slightly sweet (and very slightly sweet 'n' sour) finish. As you'd expect with a wine of this class and age, it didn't develop additional complexity in the glass, and the hints of volatile acidity that I'd half-noted at the start got a little more pronounced with time. Nevertheless, better than I'd hoped.

Decanter Great Italian Fine Wine Encounter (Landmark Hotel, London): Sherry colour and sherry notes on nose. Palate flat, soft.
