  Past its peak, but the fruit is still hanging on in there and it's still enjoyable. Drink up if you have any left.

  Brick red throughout, see through. Past its best. Nose of forest decay, dry, but with a great aftertaste. Delicate, plum and leather and leaf mould. Not unpleasant, but very different from the wine in its prime. Could only share with people who like old wines. Drink newer ones within recommended window.

  Clear ruby red with an orange hue, crystallised sediment. Past it. Old leather on the nose but thin and acid. Light and delicate with echoes of its former vigour, but left this bottle too long. Still enjoyable, but not popular round the table.

  Still delicious at the end of its recommended drinking period. Orange rim, overlapping layers of leather, leaves and oak. Autumnal, long finish. Starting to thin, but still good for a couple of years.

  Still dark red but beginning to brown at the edge. Granular sediment. Old leather and Autumn on the nose. Beginning to thin and dry out, but great lingering finish, warm leather and spice. Still able to cope with food. Past its best. Drink up.
