About 7 months from last tasting. This is inching forward in a wonderful way. Great balance, a lovely complexity on the nose and, needless to say, a superb structure and mouthfeel. It is starting to unfurl, though is still fairly tightly bundled, and should continue to develop and open up in coming years. Would still expect peak drinking in 3-5 years from here. Excellent. 93+
From previous note: "Ruby core and crimson edge. A densely layered nose of barnyard, hide, mushrooms, peppercorns, green pepper, liquorice, tapenade, concentrated blue and blackberries. This is rich, dense, but very well balanced; poised. Tannins are strong but fine; real backbone. The palate is rich and full, and is starting to lean on some of the savoury notes; the primary fruit is starting to give way a bit. What a well constructed Thalabert!"
Impromptu Saturday Double Blind Tasting $30-$50 (Bin 75): Very dark core, opaque, reddish violet rim; tar, blackberry, inky, menthol, dense, compact, graphite; dense, plush, tannin, sweet dense dark fruit, good acid but sort of restrained- ripe vintage, pencil lead, young; not giving a bunch of clues but I nailed it.
Decanted and drank. At first it was pretty straightforward, nice restrained syrah but not the complexity i was hoping for. after an hour it really developed some great secondary flavors and more backbone.
Un nez de caramel, avec du fruit noir. La bouche est ronde à la texture suave, presque délicate, mais c'est vraiment boisé. L'aromatique est encore imprégnée du bois, il a sans doute besoin de quelques années pour intégrer tout ça. 89+
