Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 20 notes)

Tasted by andy C on 1/10/2010 & rated 93 points: drank on New Years Eve and was enjoyed by all (68 views)
Tasted by zitarell on 2/24/2009: Exuberant nose, with strong tobacco notes, plum, orange, clove, and (after some time) cocoa powder. After reading other tasting notes, I was expecting this wine to smell like Secretariat’s undercarriage, but I got just a faint whiff of barnyard, which only added to the complexity of the nose on this wine.

On the (surprisingly juicy) palate, raspberry and forest floor, along with perfect, orange-blossom acid. Tannins are totally integrated. If you’re sitting on this wine, now is the time. (542 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 11/27/2008 & rated 91 points: I'm sad that this is my last bottle... (528 views)
Tasted by silk1969 on 11/24/2008 & rated 90 points: Wow, great Bordeaux nose - blackberry, pencil lead and horse doo-doo jump out of the glass. Just popped and poured with this, and swirled for about 15 minutes. Medium-bodied, with some tart, dusty berries on the palate. Some leather shows up, and clingy tannins crash the party on the finish. A dead ringer for a good to very good Bordeaux. (558 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 10/31/2008 & rated 92 points: Not a big structure wine; fruity, big red cherry. Big bouquet. Very enjoyable. (561 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 7/26/2008 & rated 93 points: Huge bouquet. Lite, fresh, fruity, even on night 2. I wish I could get more of this! (652 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 5/24/2008 & rated 92 points: (548 views)
Tasted by davergny on 5/4/2008 & rated 88 points: At first, smelled just like a Bordeaux--cedar, red berries, damp earth and floral. That dissipated a bit after a while. Medium bodied, earthy, red berries and sweet tarts, a bit rustic. Decent finish. Enjoyable, but I think it is past it's peak. (770 views)
Tasted by ClassicWater on 4/20/2008 & rated 91 points: (637 views)
Tasted by Red Mountain Man on 3/17/2008: This one was a Brett Monster. The longer it sat in the glass, the more it over took the wine. It did emit some great "old world" smells (primarily leather and smoke), but the fruit was was no longer in the forefront of this wine. I got a harsh aluminum metal taste from this wine, as if I was biting down on a rusty guardrail. I actually like this descriptor in Italian wines as a back note, but it was too much here. (998 views)
Tasted by Lorenzo on 3/17/2008: Beautiful and Explosive Nose. Particularly compared to the 97 CdB that preceeded it. Juicy, Licorice, Sultry, Earthy. Bob commented the Brett people picked up on has a tendency to (1) integrate with time and (2) change the mouthfeel of the wine and increase the perception of Acidity. Interesting... the Palate definitely showed nice acidity. Bob thought the Brett contributed a "Compost" element to this wine. I really thought this wine showed beautifully tonight and it seems to be poised to outlive the 4-10yr optimal window Bob discussed. But why wait? (922 views)
Tasted by Eric on 3/17/2008: Betz Family Winery: A Bordeaux varietal retrospective with Bob Betz (Seattle, WA): The brettiest of the wines. Depending upon your views this could be positive or negative. I thought it added nice complexity to the brooding nose. The palate is slathered in chocolate and blackberry, very round and juicy, moving to licorice. Wow this wine still packs a wallop of fruit, a big step up from the 1997. The brett shows up on the leathery finish, a decidedly old-world edge, rather loving this wine though. Still pretty grippy and acidic on the finish as well.
Vineyards: Alder Ridge, Portteus, Artz. 42% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Cabernet Franc. (1407 views)

Tasted by jcbrand on 3/10/2008 & rated 91 points: Didn't have the standard bouquet that jumps out of the glass. Still a great bottle of wine... (915 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 2/15/2008 & rated 93 points: (772 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 2/1/2008 & rated 93 points: The night it was opened this wine had the standard taste profile as the other reviews. The second night the bouquet became much more mild which seemed to make the tannins and acidity pop out a little more. Basically, finish the bottle on the night you open it and it's an outstanding wine at a great price. (1027 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 1/3/2008 & rated 93 points: Huge black cherry, leather, mocha, and vanilla. Good balance. Easy drinking... (1096 views)
Tasted by jcbrand on 12/29/2007 & rated 94 points: Huge fruit bouqet. This wine is firing on all cylinders right now but has a couple more years of cellaring potential. (1100 views)
Tasted by Wino Joe on 11/10/2007 & rated 93 points: Wow this wine aged well and will continue to improve for a few more in my book with the tanins & fruit I discovered.

An inky purple with a sligh ring of cherry around the edge just starting to show its age. a beautiful nose with forest floor, leather, cassis, black cherry & spiced leather. Wonderfully balanced cassis, creamy black cherry, roasted meats, woods an cocoa in a long finish.

This reminded me of a medium aged right bank bordeuax instead of a Washington red from the late 90s. I wish I had more of this wine. (1165 views)
Tasted by Eric on 9/9/2003 & rated 92 points: Wow, this is very impressive juice. Coffee, cocoa, black cherry and a hint of menthol make for a very interesting nose. The palate is very vibrant, lithe and refreshing with some continuing menthol and sweet, pure fruit. The finish has nice length with a touch of drying tannin and acidity. This is still very young but shaping up beautifully after a year in the cellar. I wish I had more, but at least I loaded up on the 2000 vintage of this. For a $21 bottle of wine this is simply terrific and makes me continue to think that Bob Betz is turning out some of the finer WA wines under his family label. (1804 views)
