Iberia Wimps July 2023 - Malhão de Estrela; 7/28/2023-7/30/2023 (La Trompette): Fully mature - wonderful deep nose, still some acidity there. Not sure though that I would have pegged this as Rioja - put me in mind of the recent South Africa dinner when the two Bordeaux Blends could have been Riojas, this was almost the opposite - if someone had told me this was a South African Bordeaux Blend from 1989 I could well have believed it.

2/2. No formal note but this bottle as a little tired for me - earthy, leathery and a touch dry. Drinkable, even interesting but not at all compelling. Drink up on this evidence.

1/2, decent cork (c70% lightly soaked), #22911. Medium garnet core, pale garnet/brick rim. Developed, spicy nose, leather, quite rich, touch of brine (at times a touch too much), underlying red fruit. Medium bodied, spicy red fruit, hint of tobacco, soft tannins - quite silky, fresh/vibrant acidity, good length harmonious finish. Excellent, mature.

Note consistent with previous. Classic aromas of dried strawberry, leather, integrated American oak, sage, gamey lamb. Had aged gracefully and slowly, and could last a while longer I bet. Palate enters with still vibrant high acid and tannin typical of tempernillo. very nicely and classily done.

Unfortunately, this wine is past its prime. Lack of fruit on nose and taste. Rating withheld.
