First impression on the nose was graphite and leather, taking my mind briefly to Bordeaux, but then vanilla and dill put this squarely in California. Rich, big, not shy, and perhaps slightly over-oaked (or under-fruited, as the fruit begins to fade), with some tertiary leather. Dusty tannin, sour cherry, nice acid. Good.
At home, before and after we went out to Teresa's for dinner. Consistent with prior notes, this bottle may have been even better. Slightly more fruit in this one after about two hours. it had really opened up and drinking beautifully.
Again, this one surprises to the upside, thought it would have been gone by now...
This 1996 bottle has been properly cellared since purchase but based on other mixed reviews I did not know what to expect. Didn't want to hold on to it much longer so opened it up on an average sunday nite with a halibut/salmon dinner. The cork was dry and fell apart and I thought the bottle was going to be ruined.
Surprised to the upside, thought it may have been gone. Color is fading, mild browning on the edges. Dusted red cherry, berry, plums, orange zest, oak. Still has some vibrancy. If you have it, drink up.
