Still dominated by oak and had s strong scent of coffee and tar. It breathed to show some pine needle sap and compost notes but the wood tannins were tough and astringent on the finish.

This wine is fully mature, but after an hour or less some sweet, dark cherry fruit emerged from the earthy flavors. Remarkably full and rich with notes of cassis, licorice, and maybe chocolate. The famous (infamous) '96 acidity was present, but had melded with the rest.

Chestnuts galore on the nose at first (I suspect a fair whack of wood was thrown at this wine) but became more complex and defined with air. It was meaty with a little ‘nappy de merde’ stinkiness and some darker liquorice elements. The palate had good density with piercing mineral line but remained relatively closed and unyielding for the duration of the bottle.

Dark ruby hue. Nose very complex and full, with spice, mineral, and floral scents. Palate initially less revealing but after about 90 minutes exhibited seamless, medium-bodied mix of black cherry, licorice, and iron-mineral flavors. More linear and precisely etched rather than a fruit bomb. Tannins were not hard-edged, finish was harmonious. Left an impression of place!

Too brown for a 96. Prune and raisin, skunky. Undrinkable.
