Hirsch Pinot tasting. This was lighter in color; in fact the Kistlers varied quite a lot in appearance with some showing more age in appearance than others. This wine was much better than the 96, still having a full body with excellent flavor and richness, although it seemed low in balancing acidity. Had a typical Hirsch iron/wood/herb smell and taste. My 3rd/group 4th.

Dinner with Gary at my house. This was the third pinot that we pulled along with a 1999 Flowers Camp Meeting Ridge and a 1993 Domaine Drouhin. I have always been and remain a big fan of Kistler Pinot’s. This bottle did not disappoint. Yes, it’s big, extracted, per fumy with clear cola elements, but it worked very well and was completely integrated. Not bad for an eleven year old wine. Alas, this was my last bottle, but I think I timed this one perfectly well.

Youthful deep pigmentation, red fruits still abound with forest floor and tea notes on a tart frame

Hard nails with a jagged dry finish. Drying fruit and clearly over-oaked.

Still big and fruity. The oak has integrated nicely. Extracted, but not hot or over the top. Quite nice and enjoyable.
