  • 10th MW Symposium, Wiesbaden - Day 3: Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio, a wine made from 70% Sangiovese and 30% Canaiolo, is one of the first true Italian Crus, born in 1964, when Giorgio Lungarotti realised that different plots in the Rubesco vineyard were showing higher concentration and better quality of grapes than others. Today, Rubesco Riserva Vigna Monticchio is only made from the best vintages and the vintage 2005 is the epitome of the classic style playing on finesse and elegance which Giorgio Lungarotti had as a vision for his Rubesco Riserva.

Tawny ruby color, fragrant, overripe and dried red and black cherry floral notes (carnation), old oak, decadent, coffee notes, light chocolate ones too, sweet spice notes.
Palate showing juicy fruits, the same profile as the nose, old oak again, sweet spices, edgy tannins with high acidity, bit lacking body, dried notes, med finish

  • Still plenty of vitality after 18 years, with primarily dried dark red fruit and earth. Dried black cherry, dark chocolate, balsamic vinegar, over-ripe black cherry, dried plum, licorice root, forest floor, tree bark, potpourri, light charred wood and clove. Balsamic vinegar, earthy forest floor, and charred wood on the nose. Continues to evolve and soften in the glass. Deep inky ruby with a garnet rim. Aromatic and flavor intensity: M+. Complexity: H. Dry. Acid: M+. Alcohol: H. Body: M+. Tannin: M+ with a glassy polished texture transitioning to moderately chewy on the finish. Finish: M+. Very Good / Outstanding. Best to drink now, but suitable for further aging depending on flavor profile preference.

  • Appearance: deep garnet.
Nose: medium plus intensity; aromas of wet leaves, meat, black pepper, star anise, red cherry, dark cherry, redcurrant, prune, nutmeg, sweet tobacco, basil. It’s developing.
Palate: dry, high acidity, medium plus tannins with powdery texture, high alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus flavour intensity, Medium plus finish.
Had a go from Coravin and now open it. Nose is still beautiful and complex with a lot of tertiary notes, very much like old Bordeaux, but on the palate the fruit has dropped a bit. Might be bottle variation or simply past its peak. Still charming and intriguing but better drink soon.

  • App: medium ruby with garnet rim.
Nose: medium plus intensity; aromas of meat, dark plum, prune, bay leaf, leather, savoury. It’s developing.
Palate: dry, high acidity, high tannins and structural, high alcohol, medium plus body, medium plus flavour intensity, align with nose, medium plus finish with savoury notes.
Overall, very good wine. Can drink now, has potential for further ageing. Lovely balance between acidity, alcohol and tannins. Powerful structure with finesse. Overall, I prefer 2004 to 2005 which has better tannins integration and smooth texture. Also the alcohol seems lower with more elegance and subtlety.
