  • My friend served this excellent wine. No contemporaneous notes. Decanted and consumed over 2-3 hours. Dark ruby. A complex nose that kept changing, including notes of tobacco, tar, eucalyptus, and more. Full bodied and balanced, low acidity with a pleasing palate profile. Excellent. (94-95).

  • Long time fan of Bertani Amarone wine. Cork fractured on removal but still able to be removed intact via Durand. Cork saturated to about 25%. Nose muted initially. Color was brick red to garnet with a brick/brownish tinge which initially had me concerned. After about 30 minutes nose evolved to a very pleasant primary sweet cherry, along with some interesting complexity - smoke, black forest chocolate cake, and tobacco notes. Full bodied and silky mouthfeel with cherries, element of sweetness on the palate with some oakiness and tannin on the finish. Overall, much better bottle than I expected (I have had prior issues with older Amarones tasting very oxidized - which, pleasantly, was not the case here)

  • Tasted several times during 3 hour decant. Just kept getting better. A little pruney at first, then softer tannins and a wonderful molasses aroma. Maybe slightly past peak, but I probably am too!

  • I have had this wine several times. First in Italy on release in the mid 90s, and later after getting it re-sale just recently. I think it tastes exactly like it's supposed to taste. Little rustic, but also very complex. I won't tell anyone what Amarone tastes like, but I have to say something in general. I don't think I've ever had an Amarone that was too old. I have never understood why all the pro-critics suggest such early drinking windows. These wines have a huge drinking window. They've already been through it by the time they're released they're somewhat indestructible I feel. And ready for another 20-30 no problem. It's viewer discretion, of course, as to when you want to drink it, but my experience is it just keeps evolving. Could it be those who are saying the wines are off or past prime simply don't like the Bertani style? Also 90 was a really good vintage. The 89, just as an example, has a similar nose, but the fruit is not nearly as generous at this stage. Anyway, the thing you need to do is get some 04 or 06 for like $70 and just stick it in the back of your cellar for a long time.
