Surprisingly youthful. Totally holding up, with pronounced fruit, a heap of licorice, and a touch of eucalyptus. Some spices, thyme, and smoke on the finish. Note that it took some time to open up and that it went through a funky phase at about 2 hours after decanting, when it tasted rather flat and bitter. Completely changed to a very wonderful wine at about 4 hours after decanting. So, this one needs patience and some planning ahead.

Total gamble on this bottle from a private collection but it turned out alright. Nose was non-existent at first, although blossomed a bit with about 30 minutes. Color was down-the-middle garnet, with bricking as to be expected.
A bit of fruit was still there, as were mild tannins, and everything was still reasonably balanced, but nothing terribly expressive came through. Clearly at the end of its life for this bottle but still was a bit more robust on the palate than had expected. A tinge of bitterness at the back of the palate was slightly off-putting but nothing to really throw the wine out of whack.

Surprisingly this 1985 Cab was still very good. Although the cork broke off while opening and it exhibited a brownish color at the edges, the wine nevertheless offered muted but refined fruits, was smooth to the palate, had a medium to light body and a very smooth and delicate finish. We thoroughly enjoyed this elegant mature wine.

dark ruby, brick edges, still loads of fruit, currants, dark berry, cedar, spice, integrated tannins, long finish, 12% ETOH, still going strong at 39
