At first, I thought the bottle was way past its prime. not much nose and a rather odd taste. I was going to toss or leave it home, rather than take it to a tasting. Instead, I took it as a back-up and it started to shine after another hour being decanted. really fooled me

I have had several other vintages of Maya Merlot which were much riper and drank better earlier than this 2005. Opened for 2 hour decant, and it was sorely needed. After time, the blackberry and menthol and herb appeared and it was much better with food. But this really needs another 10 years (truly) before it will drink well. I won't drink any more til then, but I expect at that time the score will be higher.

Green and weedy. I wanted to call this elegant but unfortunately it was not. Just thin and weak, perhaps some Brett/funk. Not terrible, but not good. This was my first encounter with this winery and really wanted to like it. Perhaps this is why I found it for a relative bargain on the store shelf.

Garnet to almost brick in color. From cellar temperature it took a while to open up, with mostly a cellar nose characteristic of the Mayacamas cellars. Smells of matchsticks, musty paper, tobacco, and fruit. Wine is fairly acidic with a light and fairly smooth tannic finish. Not really out of balance, but a slow, contemplative wine.
