A 65th Birthday Celebration (Schur House - Riverwoods IL): Small glass from magnum. Very lush aromatic start with ripe black fruits and liqueur. Less distinguished or distinguishing on palate, but still tasty while clearly ripe.

Surprisingly good. PNP. Some sediment, took its time to open up. Drank next to a ‘10 Bryant and half the table preferred the Cain, me too. It drank more smoothly and had a more intriguing flavor profile.

Right out if 58 degree cellar was good. Cork fired and part ended up in wine. Inhale from glass is a bold smooth balanced aroma telling you to breath in again as there is more there. Taste is moderate body , no biting, average fruit but again this haunting of “taste me” draws me in to sip more and more. Paired well with Italian sausage with barratta, olive oil & vinegarett. Not had a bad Cain Five ever

Cain Vineyard and Winery Winemaker Lunch (City Club FW): I have had this wine multiple times before, and when pulled from my cellar, it was a great pop and pour. First time I had it was in 2019, I think. At this lunch, Chris said it had been double decanted for some reason, even though it is the most delicate of the flight. Either way, the nose was the pure red fruit that I remembered, even if the palate was softer and more restrained than I remembered. Lots of muted fruit, and slight bricking in the glass. Maybe slight leather, but still more fruit than earthy, tertiary characteristics, but the fruit was more stewed fruit than fresh red cherries. Still very good.

(Cain Five, Spring Mountain District) 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 13% Petit Verdot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec. Subtle aromas of dried fruits and leaves, coffee, and spice broaden to reveal cassis, tobacco, and leather. Give this wine some time to open up; the vintage is more restrained than 2007. Fruit comes into play on the midpalate, filling the mouth with a freshness that is not initially apparent. I did not detect Brettanomyces in any of the ’07s, but it does show its presence in the 2006. To me, it seems moderate and in keeping with the other elements of the wine. At first fruit was muted, after 3 hours the wine came alive. Nice balance of raspberry fruit, with some tannin left. Enjoy now and next 2 years
