Bouquet: Very aromatic though refined and with understated earth, tobacco, smokey wood with roasted dried cherry aromas. Body and texture: Nicely integrated, medium body with moderately smooth mouth feel. Flavor: Tobacco, earth, licorice, red cherry with some sweet spice (sandalwood possibly) that had a family resemblance to cinnamon. Finish showed dried red cherry plus roasted flavors and some subtle coffee notes. Approximately 30-35 second length. Overall: Outstandingly complex nose and balanced, nicely integrated fruit, oak, and acidity. The tannins and fruit have evolved as have the savory secondary characteristics from my tasting of this 4 years ago. Drank while eating at Osteria Gaudente with D, P and T. Original price was 5700 yen but paid 4500 yen. A great example of how well Prugnolo Gentile (Sangiovese Grosso) can age and produce stunning aromatics.

Bummer that this was "corked". We had this at a tasting at the winery in Sep-05 and really enjoyed this. We also got to taste a 1993 version of the wine and it was splendid. So I figured this could go 8-12 years. It had that musty smell that never went away but the underlying wine was very good with sour cherries and mushrooms. We were "thirsty" and drank it anyway to celebrate our 29th anniversary.
