  • Audozed approximately 1 hour w/o cork. The nose on this is very unique and I can only describe it as "cherry root beer meets cranberry balsamic"- deep black cherry, anise, some floral hints, earthy tar, peppery spice, and the cocoa, cranberry and balsamic notes that disappear with a few swirls but come back as it sits in the glass.

Nothing wrong with the cork and still plenty of fruit so I am assuming the VA is from the winemaking or aging.

The palate shows juicy black cherries along with the classic aged Nebbiolo bouquet with a prominent tobacco-tea earthiness and hints of plum and black olive mixed in for good measure. Tannins are leathery but still plentiful providing almost all of the structure at this point; acidity is on the lower end even for Barolo.

Possibly on the downhill slope considering the balsamic notes but with the lower acidity after 11 years, further aging doesn't give me hope for improvement. Time hasn't softened the tannins either. Doesn't quite compare to the 2008 or the 2012 that are much brighter and cleaner. Around $50 vine2home.

  • Agree with other tasters. This is a very closed tannic version of Burlotto. On day two more approachable.

  • Excactly the same experience as barnaby33. Saving the other half for tomorrow - hoping it won't be so restraint.
    Day one:
Wonderful nose with plenty of dried plum, roses and cedar. Some sweetness too.
Palate with great acidity and somewhat reticent fruit . Great mouthfeel, but it is very soon taken over by unforgiving and austere tannins. Don't know if it just needs a lot of cellaring or this vintage is off. Wasn't faulty.
Normally I love this producer - so a bit disappointed.
Day two: tannins had soften a bit, but the fruit had also leveled down some. Otherwise same thing as the day before.
All in all there is something charming about it, but have had better examples of this wine.

  • Even a month later the memory remains though not in a good way. I love this producer but this wine was a tannic rock. Hopefully in 5 years it will open up but dear sweet jeebus it was unforgiving. Seriously hard, tannic, fruit gone somewhere north for the winter. Reading other tasting notes it's like we were all drinking different wines.

  • Fresher and slower to open than the 2004 Roagna Pajé which it followed; and though apparently less aromatically complex it seemed more powerful and firm (somehow it seemed to me it had stronger torque). Very good.
