Our last bottle and very different from the previous one, being distinctly more fruity but perhaps lacking complexity or depth. I doubt I would have suggested left bank Bordeaux if tasted blind.

Effectively the second wine of Leoville Poyferre, we had not drunk this for over six years and we approached it with some trepidation as customary knowledge seems to be to drink such wines within 5-8 years of the vintage. The wine was dark with some transparency on the edge but no obvious bricking. At first the nose was definitely smelly, an intriguing mix of cedar, cigar box even a hint of liquorice. On the palate the wine was dry, firm but not austere. Yes the primary fruit had faded but so had the tannins and acidity; there was still structure and it was balanced. We enjoyed it with roast duck. I don’t imagine it will get better but there was still pleasure and should be for a while yet. One bottle left.

I'm becoming less enamoured by these lesser 2009 Bx. Big upfront ripe nose but this is followed by a big but disappointingly dry, hollow palate. Just a bit more fruit than 2003 but seemingly these wines are going the same way.
