  • This was a bottle I was struggling to find a lot of information on prior to opening it, but opted to give it a go nonetheless. Having begun to really enjoy mature, tertiary Burgundian wine over the last few months, this Domaine Faiveley 1er Cru from Nuits-Saint-Georges absolutely did the trick. Grown in Les Saints-Georges, the nose immediately produced an aroma of earthiness, smoke and ripe red cherries. Carrying into the palette, a medley of strawberries and tart red cherries were accompanied by cedar, spices, earthiness and a subtle hint of anise. A medium-bodied wine, I was taken aback (in a good way!) at how powerful this wine was 22 years down the line. With the tannins having smoothed out and a good level of integration, this bottle was right at its peak in my opinion. A thoroughly enjoyable bottle had over two hours.

  • 8/10 - A restrained and musty nose of earth with some smoke and just a tinge of fruit coming through. The earth blows off after a while but the nose remains as closed. Not surprisingly, the wine exhibits similar characteristics to the Les Cazetiers 01 that I had a while back, also by Faiveley. The acid, while not as exciting as the Cazetiers, was still nice. The red cherries, strawberries and dried cranberries only came around after some aeration but were quite worth the wait. Tannins were just a tad grainy, but otherwise the wine was smooth. Nice drink to get Friday started.
