  • I think that Riesling fan nailed it. This is past prime. Honey and butterscotch. A pity because there is significant acidity underneath and this ends up clinging to the palate for a while. Perhaps this had some mistreatment before acquisition but this is definitely not what I was expecting from an 01 Riesling. A pity.

  • Purchased on release and perfectly stored. I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised here. The fruit shows some maturity, with the fruit taking on a very slightly baked quality (baked apples, grilled peaches) along with tart cranberries, strawberries, minerals, gingerbread spice and citrus. The palate was so lively and electric, with the acidity of biting into a lime. Tart, tangy and long.

  • If you have this, drink it. We're into late middle age, and it's turning into generic "nice old Riesling." That's fast evolution for purchased on release and properly stored 2001 German Riesling, but Loosen has never made the most age worthy wines IMO.

  • Excellent wine and in a perfect drinking window now, but still on the taut/young side, which is how I prefer it. Classic aromas of slate, plastics, ripe green apple, etc., with very little exotic aromas -- all very pure and pristine. Very weighty but with a slap of acidic backbone that keeps this refreshing. Long and persistent finish. We drank this too quickly, but I think an open bottle would evolve for several hours easily.

  • My first '01 Spatlese in a while and this one is starting to come into its own. A spicy character to the nose with lemons. Definitely creamy and citrusy in the mouth with more spice and loads of young-seeming acidity. Very enjoyable now but I'm guessing this may continue to improve over a few years. I'll try to hold my last few bottles but it's really fun now.
