Walk around tasting. A big step up here with even more red cherry throughout with spice hints. Clear depth throughout with a rich start and good+ balance from middle froward. Avery good value wine.
Walk around tasting.Ripe start with black cherry, then more red cherry towards finish. Already accessible, this is a fun Barolo that can easily be enjoyed young.
Walk around tasting. Lighter style for the vintage with good fruit concentration and tannins from the middle through finish. Needs time, good 88+ point potential.
Walk around tasting. Big and ripe start with floral hints. Black and red cherry with some plum notes, fresh herbs and anise. Good tannins are slightly soft but clear near finish. Very good length.
Walk around tasting. Ripe cherry and plum with a richness and old vine concentration I truly appreciate. Near balance already, but still firm tannins on long-ish finish. Very good 91-92 point potential 2023 forward.
Walk around tasting. More ripeness and density vs the traditional Vajra 2015 Barolo wines just tasted. Complex array of dark fruit and spice with tannins and an Old School character that will reward patience.
Walk around tasting. Ripe and nearly sweet character that comes across as fun and simple, but then some bright acidity brightens up the finish. Good now.
Walk around tasting. Lots of roasted meat and substance to start, but then this seems to trail off. Still good overall, possibly just shut down in the middle for now? 89 points today, upside?
Walk around tasting, brief note. Red cherry start-to-finish. Light start followed b more power and density in the middle. Long finish shows an old vine concentration.
Walk around tasting, brief note. Red and black cherry with a tannic start and softer middle. Better to cellar a year or two, then enjoy as a simple, fun wine.
Walk around tasting, brief note. Red cherry, some berry with plenty of silky tannins. Very Pinot-like to me. Not a powerhouse, but this has sneaky density and a long finish. Better to cellar for at least a few years. This should drink well for many years.
Walk around tasting, brief note. Wow, this is an excellent expression of Chianti. Red cherry throughout, but with smoky, spicy, and near meaty notes, then some black cherry hints. Light and powerful at the same time with an endearing weightlessness and a long, expressive finish.
Walk around tasting, brief note. Lots of complex red fruit, followed by some black fruit. A long and elegant finish with some backward, Hardy notes that show backbone without distracting. Needs a few years to harmonize a little more, but very good 91+ point potential.
Walk around tasting, brief note. Unmistakably and prototypically Cabernet Sauvignon in an Old World, non-Bordeaux style. Lush and ripe plum, black cherry and currant in a charming, accessible combination.
Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Coste della Sesia
Walk around tasting, brief note. 80% Nebbiolo comes through on floral charming nose. Same charm doesn’t follow through on rugged palate. OK overall. Needs lots of time?
Walk around tasting. Ripe red fruit throughout with hints of licorice and balsamic. Lush start, more tannic middle forward, yet balanced. Medium weight. Will be a nice younger drinking Barolo, still better to cellar a few years.
Walk around tasting. A big step up. Much more concentration and power with as much charming red fruit. Not quite as overtly ripe, so slightly taut and austere, as often expected from young Barolo, but the density and substance imply a bright future, 2023-.
Walk around tasting. Clearly ripe red cherry throughout, this shows both concentration and structure that combine to hint at its potential, even if slightly firm today. Consistent with my tasting experience from a few weeks ago, 91+ point potential, better to cellar 2023-2035.
Walk around tasting. A near-modern and very Italian expression of a Bordeaux bland with lots of fun fruit and a good burst of energy from the middle forward. Very enjoyable, very good value wine to enjoy 2020-2026.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Light color and aromatic start with earth, pale cherry and anise. Picks up depth quickly on palate, but also getting earthy and austere. Powerful, long finish. A lot here, but a very tough wine to fairly assess tonight. Another 2013 Brunello that baffles me.
Walk around tasting. Ripe and rich with a bit of earth, also in a modern style that I found more dominant here. I understand why some enjoy this wine. but it's not for me.
Walk around tasting. Very pretty nose with ripe black fruit, spice and floral character, perhaps more than its fair share driven by oak, but still enchanting. Rich black-fruited flavor profile to start, then slightly hollow in the middle, finishes rich again. Give a few years to integrate, but I'd be optimistic, even if not a buyer at its price.
Walk around tasting. Even more substance with plenty of red and black cherry and background spice, cedar and fresh herbs. Very good concentration, somewhat firmly structure for now, better 2022-, 91-92+ point potential.
Walk around tasting. Very powerful and ripe, transitioning to a leaner, long finish with good brightness. Still lots of red and black cherry throughout with spice a little too oak/ modern driven. Good 2030-.
Walk around tasting. Classic and old school styled wine, but the inherent ripeness manages to make this so charming already now. Spring flowers, bright red and black cherry with black pepper and anise. Sneaky power on finish.
Walk around tasting. Accessible version of Barbaresco with fun fruit and silky tannins. Soft start, then sneaky good weight and depth from middle forward.
Walk around tasting. From La Morra. Ripe red cherry with some modern styled elements, but good structure, but the tannins are on the silky side. Complex finish has more spice, fruit and nuanced textures. Cellar a few more years, enjoy, 2022-2040, 91-92 point potential.
Walk around tasting. Floral and spice driven start with ripe red cherry. Red and black cherry flavors and blood orange and licorice hints. Soft tannins are ever-present in the near background. So much here, but tough to completely assess, but probably 92-93+ point potential. One of the tasting highlights.
Walk around tasting. Starts off with roses, spice and red cherry aromas. Slightly riper on palate, with macerated red and black cherry with good+ concentration. Rugged tannins for now on the finish. Better from 2024-.
Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Sforzato di Valtellina
Walk around tasting. Nebbiolo made like Amarone? Lots of dried red fruit that doesn't seem quite harmonious (yet?), so very tough to assess. I'd think this 87-88 points, but others enjoyed this more.
Walk around tasting. Red berries here with earth, dried herbs and licorice. Good enough weight, better textures and overall brightness. Close to drinking well already.
Walk around tasting. Also on the lighter side, there is plenty of red cherry with some tobacco, earth and flora notes. classic and easy with medium weight. I slightly preferred the Barbaresco.
Walk around tasting. Floral and nicely expressive aromatic start with red cherry and berry. Similar flavors but without the density I expect from this terroir. Certainly good, but slightly disappointing today.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Elegant and lighter styled, this seems open and easy to start, then really revs up its density and complexity from the middle forward. Sneaky good power on finish. Probably best to cellar a year or three, then enjoy on the young side for Brunello.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Fresh and dried red cherry with tobacco and earth, giving this a slightly dirty note, but not necessarily in a bad way. Lots of spice and complexity here, but also firm and austere right now. I liked this and thought it 90+ points, while others enjoyed it much more.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Complex set of red fruit and spice aromas and flavors with good enough density, but intriguing layers of nuance. Very interesting already with clear upside, 91+ point potential.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Meat, dried red cherry, tobacco, and leather lead a complex array of aromas and flavors in a very Old School combination that I just find slightly too tannic for the fruit.
Walk around tasting. Red and black cherry throughout with some modern and classic elements here. 50% Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Charming now, but slightly dirty (bretty?) in a way that makes me think it best to drink younger.
Walk around tasting. Charming red cherry and berry with floral and spice support with graceful tannins and a nearly approachable character already today.
Walk around tasting. A big step up, but not nearly as accessible. Lots of complex red fruit with equally complex, nuanced spice. Lots of very elegant tannins with a very long finish. Cellar to 2030 or later, 91-92+ point potential.
Walk around tasting. Light start, then suddenly bigger, riper and bolder from middle forward. Sneaky power on finish with impressive length. An excellent Rosso di Montalcino.
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Complex red cherry with a broad array of floral, spice and fruit character in support. Lots of acidity and lots of silky tannins. Not a powerhouse, but this is a very elegantly nuanced wine that required time and attention. 92-93+ point potential. A real highlight tonight.
Walk around tasting. Very rich and very dense with so much here, but imperfectly harmonized right now..but so much here. They have transitioned to 100% American oak.
Walk around tasting. Bright red cherry with licorice and dried herb hints. Very elegant and bright, still slightly tannic on finish. Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera.
Walk around tasting. Black cherry and berry with very good weight and depth. Powerful and cellarworthy, just slightly rugged in the middle for now, better 2022-.
Walk around tasting. Floral start with so much red cherry and anise giving it a prototypically "Barolo" nose, but then a less classic palate that seems more modern andnot quite as charming or elegant. Tough to tell where this will emerge.
Walk around tasting. Red cherry with so much spice on nose. So easy and charming to start with a long, expanding minerally finish. Excellent 91-92 point potential.
Walk around tasting. Black and red cherry with so much substance and weight, just very firm tannins. Not quite harmonious, but there is so much great material here. More accessible than the earlier vintages from the early 2000s (which as just starting to come around), but this will also need a decade in the cellar.

2013 Marchesi di Barolo Barolo Cannubi 89 Points
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Walk around tasting. Floral and nicely expressive aromatic start with red cherry and berry. Similar flavors but without the density I expect from this terroir. Certainly good, but slightly disappointing today.

2014 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino 90 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Elegant and lighter styled, this seems open and easy to start, then really revs up its density and complexity from the middle forward. Sneaky good power on finish. Probably best to cellar a year or three, then enjoy on the young side for Brunello.

2013 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Fresh and dried red cherry with tobacco and earth, giving this a slightly dirty note, but not necessarily in a bad way. Lots of spice and complexity here, but also firm and austere right now. I liked this and thought it 90+ points, while others enjoyed it much more.

2014 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino 88 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Forward and easy start, hints of spice and nuance on finish, but less finessed than typical from Brunello.

2016 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

2016 Fattoria dei Barbi Brusco dei Barbi Toscana IGT
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Walk around tasting. Enjoyable in a modern style that made this wine somewhat non-distinct for me. 10% Merlot.

2013 Il Palazzone Brunello di Montalcino
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Meat, dried red cherry, tobacco, and leather lead a complex array of aromas and flavors in a very Old School combination that I just find slightly too tannic for the fruit.

2013 Il Palazzone Lorenzo & Isabelle Toscana IGT 87 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
Walk around tasting. Red and black cherry throughout with some modern and classic elements here. 50% Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Charming now, but slightly dirty (bretty?) in a way that makes me think it best to drink younger.

2015 Elvio Cogno Barolo Cascina Nuova 90 Points

Walk around tasting. Charming red cherry and berry with floral and spice support with graceful tannins and a nearly approachable character already today.

2015 Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Walk around tasting. A big step up, but not nearly as accessible. Lots of complex red fruit with equally complex, nuanced spice. Lots of very elegant tannins with a very long finish. Cellar to 2030 or later, 91-92+ point potential.

2015 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Rosso di Montalcino 90 Points
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Light start, then suddenly bigger, riper and bolder from middle forward. Sneaky power on finish with impressive length. An excellent Rosso di Montalcino.

2012 Tenuta Greppo (Biondi-Santi) Brunello di Montalcino
Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
Walk around tasting. Complex red cherry with a broad array of floral, spice and fruit character in support. Lots of acidity and lots of silky tannins. Not a powerhouse, but this is a very elegantly nuanced wine that required time and attention. 92-93+ point potential. A real highlight tonight.

2013 Romano Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore Vigneto di Monte Lodoletta
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Valpolicella Superiore
Walk around tasting. Very rich and very dense with so much here, but imperfectly harmonized right now..but so much here. They have transitioned to 100% American oak.

2014 Tasca D'Almerita Rosso del Conte 91 Points
Italy, Sicily, Contea di Sclafani
Walk around tasting. Black cherry and berry with very good weight and depth. Powerful and cellarworthy, just slightly rugged in the middle for now, better 2022-.

2013 Damilano Barolo Cannubi
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Walk around tasting. Floral start with so much red cherry and anise giving it a prototypically "Barolo" nose, but then a less classic palate that seems more modern andnot quite as charming or elegant. Tough to tell where this will emerge.

2013 Boroli Barolo Cascina La Brunella
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Walk around tasting. Red cherry with so much spice on nose. So easy and charming to start with a long, expanding minerally finish. Excellent 91-92 point potential.

2016 Fattoria Galardi Terra di Lavoro 92 Points
Italy, Campania, Campania IGT
Walk around tasting. Black and red cherry with so much substance and weight, just very firm tannins. Not quite harmonious, but there is so much great material here. More accessible than the earlier vintages from the early 2000s (which as just starting to come around), but this will also need a decade in the cellar.
