2002 Dom P was opened over the weekend to help celebrate several of us who had turned 50 during the last year or two of COVID lockdown. We also opened some older Bordeaux.

Kicked off today with a Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Réserve. Apparently this used to be rather good fizz, but the more recent releases are pretty innocuous stuff.

At a superb little gathering of CT friends grafstrb, bweimer, puppetclause, and Robert Pavlovich yesterday, we kicked off festivities with these pink fizzies:

NV José Michel & Fils Brut Rosé 1.5L - very serviceable. simple and the softest of the 3
NV Vilmart & Cie Cuvée Rubis - a definite step up in bouquet and depth of flavor
2012 Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé - fireworks!

Sister-in-law came over yesterday for the weekend and brought with her a bottle of a NV Bollinger special cuvee so I will pop the cork for dinner tonight.

Kicked off this evening with a Charles Le Bel Champagne Inspiration 1818, this apparently being the second label of Billecart-Salmon. It was OK, but a bit unmemorable.

2012 Ultramarine Blanc de Noir (late disgorged)

Since I just bought a part of this year’s allocation, I felt like it was a good time to have a bottle. This was really lovely, simultaneously rich and bright, with a gorgeous copper hue. Wish I had more, but this was my only bottle.

NV R. & L. Legras Grand Cru BdB

In my imaginary restaurant where I am the wine steward, this could be my BTG house sparkler.

A rather nice Lancelot-Pienne Champagne La Dame du Lac, which we just had to accompany with a reviewing of Monty Python & The Holy Grail.

Magnum of Schramsberg Brut Rose for NYE

Of the 31 most recent notes on my wine, 29 of them were for bubbly. So much for a “Champagne shortage”

We fell asleep on the couch last night around 11pm with a bottle of bubbles on standby. The best part is, we woke up this morning with no hangover! Winning!

So, I decided to start the new year off right with bubbles for breakfast. I mean, it was already chilled.

PS: 2007 Charles de Cazanove goes great with breakfast.

Tonight, kicking off with probably my favourite reasonably priced (~US$37) grower champagne of the moment: Tristan Hyest Blanc de Blancs Les Terres Argileuses Extra Brut. A 2011 base, almost 9 years on lees (10/2020 disgorgment). Excellent stuff.

This week Saturday kicks off with a simple but pleasing Italian rosé; quite good QPR at ~US$17.5.

Today, kicking off with a 2012 Dehours Brisefer Extra Brut, which was a nice crisp way to start the evening, but, for me not worth the price compared to other grower champagnes that I have enjoyed recently.

For once, Friday was alcohol-free, but today, to celebrate the fact that Sabrina and I both tested negative after our Omicron, a decent bottle of Vincent Renoir Grand Cru Brut Rosé de Terroir

Paul852, glad to see that yous tested negative from the virus so yes, a little bubbly will be nice. I will also look to have something frizzante today as well.

My wife and I very seldom drink sparkling wine, but occasionally we have Korbel Brut (partly because I used to belong to a limited partnership that sold it "balancing" grapes).

When we go out, we sometimes have Champagne such as Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose.

On Saturday afternoon we had a 375 of Roederer Collection 242 with some Mt Tam triple cream cheese in between shows at a film festival. I liked this half bottle a little better than the full we had last year. Took about 30 minutes to open up but had some very nice toast and almond aromas and good minerality.

This week a bottle of Robert Barbichon Rosé de Saignée. It seems that the producers does a lot of experimentation with different batches of this wine. None have been bad so far, and the latest one I have is one of the best. A great way to kick off Saturday evening.

(Available from suppliers in NY, CT and NC according to Wine-Searcher Pro)

There seem to be many good sparkling wines. At wine dinners at our club Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose NV is often served and almost everyone likes it.

At home we drink little sparkling wine except in mimosas. We find Korbel Brut good in those and OK alone.

We tailgated for a couple of hours before the Paul McCartney concert. Drank a bottle of 2014 Domaine Carneros "Le Reve" as it was like a dream to be there. Had some cheese, crackers, and grapes to accompany it.

If you are a Beatles and/or Wings fan, don't say "maybe next time." Sir Paul will be 80 in two weeks, and I firmly believe that this will be his last true tour. He was still magical, but it was obvious that this wasn't as easy as it was when "Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play."
