2014 Keplinger Caldera

El Dorado County Mourvèdre Blend, Mourvèdre more

3/17/2024 - jkscully Likes this wine: NR

69% Mourvèdre/27% Grenach/4% Counoise. This had solid acid and strong tannins still, so I think it would have been better with age (though everything was well-balanced). Nevertheless, it was drinking well after about 2 hours of air. This tastes like Mouvedre, with leather, olives, smoke, tobacco, roasted meat, iron, and provencal herbs. Faint hints of raspberry and blackberry in the background, but the fruit takes a back seat here. I don’t think that it has the flash of some of the more notable regions from California, but it was clearly a good wine and a welcome old-world style. If this is what Sierrea Foothills can do, then I’m impressed. It really grew on me and, in the end, I wish I had some more bottles to experiment with (especially extended ageing). Excellent match with roasted duck with olives from my Provencal cookbook. The olives and the duck were just right with the savory characters of the wine.

My second bottle was much better than the first. I was not looking forward to opening this bottle based on my experience with my prior bottle. But to my surprise, it was completely different and very enjoyable. The fruit was pleasant but not overbearing and the tannins had nicely softened.
A geat bottle that could have gone another year or two - but why wait - it's beautiful now.
PNP, no need to aerate.
Enjoy

Really youthful and primary out of the gate - almost like a barrel sample. Fleshed out a little with a few hours in the decanter, but still very purple, fruity, and young. Not sure how/when this will round out and gain more depth and complexity. Good, and hoping it gets better.

Nice blend. Still a bit rustic/aggressive on the tannins and I would give it another year or two at this point.

This is a refined, well made wine. Primarily a GSM, but with several interesting varietal additions, most notably Viognier. The nose is dark fruit, but has a “meaty” character. Body is full with great legs. The taste is well balanced, with a bright attack and dry lasting finish. It holds up very well for a 7-year old wine.

I mistakenly posted this review as a '19. shared this with Sean, Andy, and Cyclist at our recent Philly CT meet up.
basically PnP. another well made, balanced, new world GSM from the central coast. No specific notes but it was full bodied and quite tasty.
Glad it opened up more for Sean on the following days.

This improved significantly after two days in my fridge after Tuesdays dinner. 46% Grenache, 35% Mourvèdre, and 19% Syrah. Bit of barnyard on opening, really settled down with some more air. Thanks Andy for bringing!

This has stuffing; nearly same impression as prior taster 8 years ago. Tobacco, licorice and a cocoa finish. Heavy, viscous body that tastes like a forest fruit smoothie followed by a shot of espresso. Would not guess this is already 17 years old. A classic California Petite that plays to expectations.

FEBRUARY PHILLY CT MEET UP
get together last night with Andy, Cyclist and Sean in the burbs.
This 100% grenache hails from Russian River. Dark ruby wine with nice notes of black raspberries, wild flowers, white pepper. more dark fruits, raspberries, pepper, flowers on the palate. relatively full bodied, fine tannins
Drinking well in the moment, I don't think that this had any airtime before. I thought that the Andremily Grenache was a few points higher, more complexity and longer finish.
Thanks for bringing this Andy - my first Basilisk

Gosh I love Syrah and this is a lovely rendition with medium bodied purplish fruit offset by a ferrous minerality and a balsamic-tinged acidity, with classic Syrah notes of smoked bacon and roasted meats and green peppercorns. Hard to put down.

Beautiful aromatics…wild flowers and pepper. Very floral. Blackberries and charred meats. Oak is strong but not overpowering. Long tannic finish, but still elegant. Will age many more years, will check back in 5.

A generous leave behind from our house guest which I then shared a few weeks later with with friends that are regular buyers of Keplinger.

This was very approachable at PNP. A Rhone blend of 35% Petite Sirah, 34% Syrah, 26% Mourvedre, 5% Viognier It will be interesting to see how this develops with bottle again but no harm in pulling now!

Good as usual. Full-bodied with blackberry, plum, and pepper. Smooth, with integrated tannins, and quite dry. PnP at cellar temp and was ready to go. Would be a point or two higher but there was just a touch of sweetness on the finish.

This is a yummy wine! I opened it about four hours before dinner and decanted it. Then I double decanted it and that helped reduce the acidity. SO full bodied - full of fruit, some pepper and still has lots of acidic balance. Lots of years left on this baby!

14.7% abv. 95% Syrah, 5% Viognier from Hudson Carneros vineyard. Dark crimson/magenta color, opaque core. Threw a fine sediment straight from cellar. Despite high alc not hot on nose at all - blue and red fruits, bay leaf, fragrant flowers, mildest sense of funk under it all. Med plus weight, quite smooth. Black cherries, more bay leaf, sun-dried tomato, flashes of grilled meat, savory and bacon. 45sec finish. Near peak drinking window, enjoy for another 7+ years. Exotic and stylish.

2015 Keplinger Caldera

El Dorado County Mourvèdre Blend, Mourvèdre more

1/3/2024 - sfwinelover1 Likes this wine: NR

Last and best bottle from a 5 bottle auction lot. As I mentioned in my prior TN, and consistent with subsequent TN from CT friend csimm (or is it csim?), this really needed time in the bottle, and I wasn’t well served by pro reviewers who suggested the first bottle I had was ready 4 years ago and led me to give away 2 of the remaining bottles, even though it’s rare for me to break into a bottle too early. This is drinking beautifully at present, immaculately balanced between red and dark fruit, structure and secondary notes with notable lift, length and expressiveness. I’ve mentioned elsewhere I tend to find the 7-10 window ideal for Helen’s Rhones, although a ‘10 I had of this bottling last year was still singing impressively. This was good to go off the pour but held consistently over 3 nights, shining on its own and as an accompaniment to burritos. Drink now-next several years. Would buy more and highly recommended, particularly at my price. 93-94+ if scoring.
