It’s funny that we again tonight paired this bubbly with a spinach omelette for dinner! The wine is light and sparkling , and as I said in a previous note, it is a little lacking in flavor. It’s good enough for a weeknight dinner, but it does not have enough depth.

Still needs more cellar time, but the fruit underneath the tannins is all there and wonderfully ripe and concentrated. This will be awesome in coming years.

Fantastic wine, found at Costco for $75 ... A steal given a $150 retail price point elsewhere. Decanted for 30min and it was amazing, but will clearly cellar for another 5-10 years as well.

Best wine of the year. Dark dark purple no bricking. Dark berries and spice on the nose. Palate is very well balanced with dark berries spice and moderate acid and fine tannins. I’m thinking easily another year or two. PnP in big boys glasses.

A tale of two second growth second label Rauzan (sort of). I pitted this wine against a 2015 Rauzan-Segla “Segla” just for fun, although the two are very different wines with the Segla being a Margaux second label and this wine being Merlot dominant haut-medoc label by Rauzan-Gassies. Both were slow-oxed in bottle for about 6 hours and both tip the scale at a weighty 14.5% alc/vol.

This wine had a bit more of a right bank nose and a dark purple/red appearance with clear to dark red rims. The palate was well balanced with fruit/tannin/acidity and pretty well integrated at this point in time. The fruit is quite rich and dense - I get plums, darker fruits, some earth and a bit of iron/blood oranges on the finish. The depth and concentration here, with a decently long finish, suggest fruit sourced of a very decent pedigree and certainly punching way above its CAD $36.95 price point at LCBO in Toronto.

I will comment on the “Segla” separately under its own wine ratings, but with the Segla at a CAD$77.95 price point, I would say the clear winner is the 2016 l’Orme de Rauzan-Gassies on a quality-to-price ratio, if not even straight head-to-head. Great value and well made for what it is.

Both of these wines were better enjoyed with food - for me this was mixed charcuterie (Bresaola, strong la Sauvagine cheese, etc). Also got more enjoyable brought down to cellar temperature after opening up for 5-6 hours to breathe, it took heat out of the higher alcohol and put more focus back to the wines’ structure. One of the biggest mistakes we usually make is drinking our good whites too cold and our good red wines too warm.

Lovely wine for the price and strongly recommend.

Keeps getting better. Sure sign that Wohler Pinots can age. The earth and mushroom are just starting to really show their stuff. Medium bodied with medium acidity. Beautiful now. Black cherry on the palate followed by forest floor, mushroom and some tar. Quite good now, but can go another 5 years.

This is a semi-transparent medium purple colored wine. The palate is very varietal and very typical of the Williams Selyem style. There's black cherry, blackberry, and raspberry on the palate. The consistency is fleshy and the body is medium. There's some bitterness on the finish that's not attributed to tannins. This wine exhibits simple complexity. It's very well made as is everything I've drunk from Williams Selyem, but it's not my favorite vineyard select from their portfolio. There exists some Burgundian qualities to this wine.

GRAPE VARIETIES
90% Grenache Noir, 10% Mourvèdre.
TERROIR
Cambrian mica-schist terraces, overlooking
the sea in “lieu-dit” Taillelauque.
HARVEST
Hand-picked in small crates early in the
morning.
VINIFICATION
The harvest is destemmed without crushing
prior to vinification. Extraction is carried out by
pumping over the first week, then the
following 4 weeks the extraction is carried out
by slow infusion to build the wine’s finesse.
MATURING
70% in concrete vats to 30% in demi-muids,
for 15-18 months.
TASTING
Colour: crimson hue with bluish tints.
Nose: the nose is initially dominated by black
fruit, blueberry and graphite notes, and then
opens onto hints of spices and violet.
Palate: the attack is full, with a fresh,
sophisticated palate of silky tannins.
The blueberry notes make way for spicy notes
that linger on a long-lasting salty finish with
a hint of iodine. Great finesse and purity.
Recommended food pairing:
veal chop with wild mushrooms, catalan rack
of lamb with rosemary-laced rough mashed
potatoes, griddled tuna.
Serving temperature: 17-18°C.
Sommelier’s recommendation:
we recommend to decant this wine.
Ageing potential: 10 to 15 years.

As good as my last one. Two specials feats for me on this wine: 1. It has hints of spruce like on a savagnin and 2. lots of flintstone like on a great burgundy chardonnay. Drinks very well now and will improve in the short future (2-3 years). Awesome wine.

It’s getting to the point where improvement is not happening. So drink up. Petrol mineral, gooseberry, chives. Tingly acid, rounded with age, but still incisive. Fruit and herbs there supported by long mineral finish. A decade old Sancerre showing this much freshness and complexity is amazing and ever so pleasing. More classic Sancerre than Boulay but just as high in quality.

Gorgeous wine - probably most noticeable is the very long and unctuous finish. Lemon cough drop without the medicinal, rocky minerality, some wood hints (maybe a sandalwood kind of scent). The nose is nice, even moreso on the palate.

This wine, beautiful in the glass, not too challenging, complements food, a steal and a nice Bordeaux at that. Big fruity nose which has been described in detail in other notes, soft palate seemingly resolved (or close to) tannins and a lovely mouthfeel. Just a real nice wine. Nothing stands out above and beyond but who really cares? This bottle is ready to drink. If you’re looking to be moved, this ain’t it. If you’re looking for a totally respectable bottle of wine that can be paired with most anything (cod or salmon or sole, ah no) seared tuna, roasted chicken, sausage and peppers, broccoli rapini, sausage on orecchiette (which is what I’m having), steak, then yes. What I like most about this wine is it just delivers what it is and that is, to me, good. No breathing, deciphering or decanting, PNP.. No science. Quite nice. And for the price, you cannot lose. This brings up my question: You are somewhere in France - Paris, Lille, Bordeaux or Toulouse -in a bistro, brassiere - for this price, would you complain? I think not. And if you are in northern New Mexico as I am right now, I’m not complaining. Looking for the big guns, not this bottle. Because it’s so sure of itself, a real crowd pleaser. Oh and the label is nice. Drink it now..

First English sparkler. This one has lively acidity and freshness. Decently long finish, but not a ton of complexity to the wine. Apple and red berries mostly. Maybe slight orange zest.

Went perfectly with salmon and rhubarb.

By the glass at Nora Gray in Montreal. Orchard fruit, white flowers, and thyme on the nose. Medium body, totally dry. Dense, ripe apple on palate, no noticeable alcohol. Pretty savory, well balanced, medium plus acid. Long finish that brings a honey element into the equation. Quite good!

Lees and yeast lead the nose here, followed by limestone, lemon juice, ripe white peach and fresh tarragon. Smells elegant, with a medium intensity of aromas. The palate is more complex and intense, showing flavors of ripe white nectarines, ripe papaya, lemon juice, cumin and anise. The latter two spices show best toward the finsh. Texturally rounded, with a medium + intensity of flavors. Not as youthful as I thought it would be at this age. Deep and profound.

Medium body with medium acid. I agree on all the comments suggesting "simple seafood" as the pairing. While not traditional, it went absolutely perfectly with a chirashi bowl (that included uni and plenty of seared/smoked fish). Drink now or hold this for 2-3 more years.

Ether, cherry, and peach (?) on the nose. On the palate, black cherry, blackberry, and notes of currant, dark chocolate, and a hint of cigar box, with light tannins and well-balanced acidity. This was excellent, but I was hoping for this to reach another level given the vintage. Even so, it was a good value at about $100. Although it's in its drinking window, it will probably improve.
