Flight 1 (1 note)
White - Sparkling
2005 Juvé y Camps Cava Brut Nature Reserva de la Familia Gran Reserva
85 points
Yellow apples, some sweetness; noticeable dosage, slightly bitter, apricots, a bit short.
Flight 2 - Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial (6 notes)
Red
2001 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial
90 points
Some mushroom and dark berries, quite extracted, bark and forest floor, concentrated
Red
1994 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial
86 points
Rather anonymous nose; a bit short, some sweetness, anonymous on taste as well.
Red
1989 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial
91 points
Some forest floor, tart, a bit candy and some herbs, elegant.
Red
1987 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial
84 points
Most developed, tart and over the hill, still with noticeable tannins, fruit almost gone.
Red
1978 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial
91 points
Round and warm, apetizing, decent length, ok acidity, but made in a slightly warmer style than the other, along with 2001.
Red
1968 Marqués de Murrieta Rioja Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial
94 points
Wonderful tertiary aromas, mature, a sweet and elegant touch, fresh mushroom, long and intense.
Flight 3 - Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único (5 notes)
Red
1985 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único
93 points
Plums and mushroom, dark berries, concentrated and structured, very long. Still has potential.
Red
1980 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único
94 points
Subdued nose with some mint; fruity, underbrush, still fairly tannic, long and elegant.
Red
1968 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único
96 points
Menthol and herbs on the nose; intense and very long, still structured, complex.
Red
1967 Bodegas Vega-Sicilia Ribera del Duero Único
94 points
Lovely balance, long and spicy, an acid nerve that carries the wine, elegant. Alas, fades off in about 20 min.
Flight 4 - Older Riojas (6 notes)
Red
1959 Château Talbot
90 points
Ringer in a Rioja tasting. Still plenty of tannins, quite long, subdued. Perhaps not an entirely correct bottle, some detected a hint of TCA. Most thought it was a Rioja.
Red
1964 Bodegas Bilbainas Rioja Viña Pomal Reserva Especial
91 points
Mint and underbrush; a little light in the mouth, fresh, but rather short. Still some complexity. Liked it more than others.
Red
1968 C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España) Rioja Imperial Reserva
89 points
A hint of sweetness, fresh, OK structure.
Red
1976 Faustino Rioja I Gran Reserva
91 points
Spicy and some complexity, a bit more virile that the other Riojas.
Flight 5 - Ribera del Duero (4 notes)
Red
2002 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Millenium Reserva Pesquera
92 points
Violent tannins, a wealth of dark berries, new oak, spicy. Can mature into something very good indeed.
Red
1995 Bodegas Alejandro Fernández Ribera del Duero Janus Gran Reserva Pesquera
75 points
Sweetish fruit, some premox?
Red
1996 Bodegas y Viñedos Alión Ribera del Duero
92 points
Lovely spicy dark fruit, still fairly massive, fine acidy. Alas, my last bottle
Red
2004 Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Reserva Seleccion Roble Frances
91 points
Bluish-black, massive fruit, imposing and at one level impressive. However, what should one do with such a wine? The verdict might be different in 10-30 years. All 12 took this blind as Pingus.
Flight 6 - Priorat (5 notes)
Red
2000 Clos Mogador Priorat
90 points
Some perfume – in a good way, lots of dark fruit, spicy, dark chocolate; similar in the mouth, some alcohol shining through at the end. Good wine, but a bit too massive for my taste.
Red
1991 Rotllan Torra Priorat Gran Reserva
83 points
Short notes: Still some tannins, not too pleasant, best forgotten
Red
Red
1998 Dominio Pingus Ribera del Duero
82 points
Ok acidy, plain fruit, fruity. Best forgotten. Not spoiled, simply a very boring wine.
Flight 7 - White and Sweet Around Europe (5 notes)
White - Sweet/Dessert
1959 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon
95 points
Plums, figs, fresh citrus, almonds; in the mouth it is very refreshing, even some complexity. Will last forever.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1976 Carl Franz Engelmann Hallgartener Jungfer Riesling Beerenauslese
92 points
Apricots and nuts, botrytis; still fresh in the mouth, moderate sweetness, round, lack a bit on the length, nose was best.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1976 Salvatore Murana Moscato Passito di Pantelleria Creato
94 points
Texture and color is like a PX, prunes, mocca, chocolate, raisin. Very, very long and intense, very sweet (this must be about 300 g/l or more?), extremely powerful. May last centuries? Only made once; 1500 ½ liters.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1975 Château d'Yquem
96 points
Irreproachable provenance. Some development in color, but still a youthful touch; knotting varnish, some tobacco, raisin, citrus, intense. Fantastic balance and a surprising lightness. Unfortunately, very drinkable. My first ’75, and much more elegant than I expected.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1938 Massandra Muscat White Muscat
96 points
Darkish brown, lots of flaky sediment; Grapefruit, very ripe grapes, pear soda; similar in the mouth, and it has a unusual creamy mouthfeel, quite low acidity, but very long and intense, complex.
Closing
Rather variable qualitywise in which Ribera and to some extent Rioja fared well. Shining whites
