Introduction
This year was the second year we had our wine tasting at L'Etranger in London. As last year the food and service was without fault.
We started with two champagnes (Krug and Clicquot Grande Dame), both 1998, with the oysters and Crab Gunkan. Scallops / yellowtail with the extremely rare Voerzio Chardonnay 1997. The four red wines, Mouton 1995, Lafleur 1998, Run Rig 2001 and Gaja San Lorenzo 1999 with the three middle courses (Quail, Black Cod and Duck Breast). Ducru Beaucaillou 1985 with the cheeses and a fantastic 1998 Avignonesi Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice with the Chocolate Creme Brulee
Flight 1 (2 notes)
Flight 2 (5 notes)
Red
1998 Château Lafleur
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Wonderful wine slowly improving in the glass, catching up with the other wines and finishing equal first (for me) with the Mouton 1995. Subtle tobacco with blackberry. A bit young.
Red
1995 Château Mouton Rothschild
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
A lovely elegant wine with a long finish. Showed why this is first growth and deserved to be the winner of the evening.
Red
2001 Torbreck RunRig
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley
Big fruity wine with strong raisin flavours. Liked it better on its own instead of next to the elegant wines from Bordeaux. Needs a steak.
Red
1999 Gaja Langhe Nebbiolo Sorì San Lorenzo
Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
Like last year the Gaja didn't shine between the Bordeaux wines and the Run Rig. I like the wine but tonight it was outclassed. Sometimes to compare these wines doesn't seem fair on one or two and again it was the Gaja.
Flight 3 (2 notes)
Red
1985 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Elegant full bodied wine and great with the cheeses. Mature but a very short finish. Won't keep any bottles much longer.

Next year again
