Annual Tasting Group Holiday Party

Il Foro, Mpls, MN

Introduction

this was the big group annual holiday party. we had 40 people and an embarrassment of riches as far as the wine was concerned. It was great fun to share so many older wines and see them aging gracefully and showing so well. There were so many great wines, I don't want to slight any of them. This is always the most difficult night to evaluate the wines. So much socializing and fun and some small pours over a short time. So the notes are shorter and hopefully give an impression anyway. A big thank you to everyone for your friendship and generosity.

Flight 1 (13 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
91 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 15 minutes. First time with this producer and it was quite nice. There is a nice core of red apple fruit, with lemony citrus, medium body, good clean minerality and plenty of zesty acidity. I'll look forward to trying again in a different setting.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Claude Genet Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
92 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 15 minutes. I thoroughly enjoyed this yet again. I love the elegance and purity with pear, orchard fruit, crystalline minerality and wonderful balance. My note from 12/23/14 is was largely consistent with tonight. Just a lovely bottle.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Waris-Hubert Champagne Blanc de Noir Brut France, Champagne
90 points
I just took a small pour of this. Apple, tart, mineral, red berry, slightly sour grapefruit on the back end, fuller body, more masculine as expected, very good. 90+pts.
White - Sparkling
2003 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
94 points
Light-medium golden color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour. Fantastic stuff. I was fortunate enough to have both the '04 and then the '03 this week and they were both splendid. The '03 is really hitting its stride now, getting better every time I have it. The similarities though are quite striking. I love the toast and biscuit, hints of smoke, roasted nuts, pear, floral, lemon, sea foam, elegant and intense on both the nose and palate. A wonderfully fine expansive bead. Definitely one of my WOTN's. 94+pts.
White
2012 Bouchard Père et Fils Beaune 1er Cru Clos St. Landry Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
90 points
Light gold color. Small pour. There's some peach to go along with the citrus in this medium bodied wine with some toasted oak. Youthful and tasty.
White
2013 Bastianich Vespa Bianco Italy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Venezia Giulia IGT
91 points
This was fun, aromatic, floral, tropical fruits, a nice ripeness with sweet nectarine and a nice roundness. Very good. Went well with our salad.
White
2010 Simonnet-Febvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
92 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Way to go out on a high note! You gotta love it when the last bottle is the best yet. This had laser beam of mouthwatering acidity, bright citrus fruits with lemon and tangerine, sea shell minerality and quite a bit of energy, very good length. Classic Chablis, and for a value bottle this really delivers the goods. 91+ to 92pts.
Red
2004 Tenuta Col d'Orcia Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Poggio al Vento Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
93 points
Very dark red color. Double decanted and uncorked for 4 hours after per Chablis28. Drank 1 glass over an hour plus and again on day 2. I think Craig is being a little too hard on his bottle. I thought this was beautiful expression on the nose and palate. The nose was quite floral and elegant, with tar, creosote, tobacco, and lovely red fruits. The palate was medium bodied, also elegant, balanced and has very good length. The tannins are firm but ripe and lush. I had a little left that sat overnight in my glass and it was even smoother showing more overall integration of the tannins. I loved it.
Red
1999 Altesino Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino
90 points
Very dark red color. PNP I believe, drank 1 glass over an hour plus and again on day 2. Grippy and youthful, but some nice leather and red berry and cherry fruit, exotic spices, develops a bit of perfume. Medium body. Drinks young. 90+pts.
Red
1995 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
95 points
Very dark red.purple color, no bricking. Slow-O for 4 hours and then double decanted for 2 hours. This was just a lovely bottle. It really shows off what Pichon Baron does and is classic Pauillac. I love that perfumed essence that just flows out of the glass, with damp earth, fresh pencil shavings, leather, and cigar on top of a beautiful core of pristine cassis and dark berries. The palate reflects the nose with purity and sophistication, there's a depth and focus that resonates through the lengthy finish. Loved it. It was also fun to drink it next to the '95 Dunn Howell Mtn which was gorgeous and none too shabby itself. 94+ to 95pts.

2005 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley
92 points
Very dark purple/red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour and again on day 2. The nose is intriguing with the floral aromatics and bacon fat reminiscent of the Northern Rhone, but there is a bit of an herbal edge there as well on top of the dark blackberry and black plum fruit. The palate initially struck me as a bit intense with extract, alcohol and tannin. It settle a bit over an hour, but the true evolution transpired overnight with the little bit I saved in glass. The green edginess was gone, the tannins softened dramatically and the whole thing came together and worked. Ahh, the benefit of some air. Score is based on day 2.
Red
1999 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
This kind of got short shrift tonight. It was the last red poured at our table. I kind of forgot about it while all the other wines were flying around later. I ended up putting my glass back in the bag and and bringing it home. Tried it again the next day around noon and kind of did a double take. I'd written '99 on the glass and I had to stop and think about it for a minute to remember which '99 it was. I have to say it seemed to show more refinement with rose petals and brighter red fruits. There was a ton of sediment and it didn't seem to impact the evolution any. Hmm, don't know what to say Craig. Wish you could have tasted it again. It was pretty darn good.
White - Sweet/Dessert
2001 Château Rabaud-Promis France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
92 points
Deep gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. Showing well, probably the best bottle to date. Good texture, honey, prominent botrytis, orange marmalade, apricot, full, spiced finish. 92+ to 93pts.

Flight 2 (18 notes)

White - Sparkling
1996 R. & L. Legras Champagne Grand Cru Saint-Vincent France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
93 points
Small pour. Outstanding again, maybe not quite the bottle that we've had before, but it also may be that I didn't get very much to really savor. Still a wonderful pour and always a pleasure to drink. It was fun to have it before the Dom as there are some definite similarities. Nice toastiness and elegance yet definitive in its expression.

Pale gold color. Small pour, fairly classic, lots of citrus, grapefruit, tart and crisp.
Red
1976 Martin Ray Pinot Noir Winery Lake Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
93 points
Light-medium red color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. I think Mike Z's note is pretty spot on. I loved this. Had no expectations going in and this was wonderfully aged and nuanced. The fruit was still lively with dried berries and cherry on top of the deeply earthiness, good acid, floral elements and mineral character. Thanks, that was eye opening.
Red
1973 Ridge Lytton Springs USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley
93 points
Medium bricked red color. PNP, Drank a small pour over 15 minutes. This really was delightful. A lovely bottle that was well preserved. Very earthy, vegetal, mushroom, lacy, dried flowers, leather, the mid palate reminds me of an older Lopez. boy these are good when they're pristine. 93+pts.

Very small pour. Another beautifully aged bottle tonight. Medium dark red color, mild bricked margin. PNP. There is a great dried earthiness with red fruits shining through, leather, perfume, fine tobacco leaf, mineral dense. Loved this. I agree with Jason's assessment on longevity as well. Thanks for sharing Jason.
