La Paulée de San Francisco - Gala Dinner

The Fairmont - San Francisco CA

Tasted March 5, 2016 by Burgundy Al with 610 views

Introduction

I know I tasted several dozen more wonderful wines (and some duds) for which I wrote nothing and remembered nothing. My apologies to those wines.

Flight 1 (55 notes)

White
2013 Château de Puligny-Montrachet Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Paulee taste, brief note. Nicely floral start with ripe Apple that comes across as slightly sweet, but in a pleasurable way.
White
2002 Domaine Bernard Morey et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Embrazées France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Nicely mature cross-section of Apple aromas and flavors, also nicely supported with bright acidity and mineral textures. Very good. Served to everybody at the Paulee gala from multiple jeros.
White
2013 Hospices de Beaune Meursault 1er Cru Les Genevrières Cuvée Philippe le Bon France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
87 points
Small glass, brief note. Fleshy and fun for near-term with moderate weight and length. Elevate by the Hospices.
White
2007 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. From before I learned about the great Moreau wines, so this is the first time I've had the wine. Lots of Apple everywhere in a lean, precise manner with a super, energetic finish. Very good.
White
1999 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe Apple that is borderline opulent, but this has the bones to carry it thoughts a long finish. Also very concentrated.
White
2008 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe Apple, spice and floral start. Bigger and more exciting on nose vs palate, but nicely bright. Moderate weight.
White
2009 Domaine & Selection Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
From jero. Small glass, brief note. Big, fat and lush. Almost blowzy, but then structure rears its magical head from the middle to finish. Very interesting potential here. Elevage by Ponsot from what Alvin was told to be Laguiche fruit.

White
2005 Domaine Leflaive Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Much like the 2008 just tasted, this has orchard fruit, spice and floral character in good harmony. This wine comes across as slightly more dense, so correspondingly longer and more pleasurable. Still nicely fresh, particularly vs many other 2005 white Grand Cru bottles I have tasted recently.
White
1989 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. I've never had a great experience with this wine...until now. Wow. Maturing slowly with stone fruit, orchard fruit, lots of spice throughout. While very ripe, this is showing such great density, freshness and enough structure for everything to work together. Great length.
White
1982 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Very dense and still fresh. Excellent for drinking now, just not quite as exciting as the 1989 just tasted.
White
2007 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Lemon and lemon peel with bursts of energy and crunchy minerality that defines Perrieres. Very good.
White
2006 Louis Jadot Corton-Charlemagne Domaine des Héritiers Louis Jadot France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
91 points
Small glass, brief note. Starts off very ripe, fat, and certainly fun. Suddenly acidity and textures comes through on finish, giving a greater elegance and brightness I really enjoyed. From magnum. Good for now.
White
2007 Domaine Thenard Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Apple and lemon come across as vey precise and elegant, with very good length. Like this a lot right now, but this has the reserve and concentration to improve.
White
1986 Domaine Jacques Prieur Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
85 points
Not flawed, but just not particularly interesting. So sad.
White
1998 Domaine Francois et Antoine Jobard Meursault 1er Cru Charmes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
86 points
Small glass, brief note. Apple and baked apple, moderate structure, but still hangin' in there. Most likely better 5 years ago.
White
1990 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
From magnum. Small glass, brief note. Very ripe but with the structure to retain balance and maintain an elegant charm. Ramonet mint. Very long finish.
White
2005 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Caillerets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Nicely floral with lemon, lemon zest, ripe apple. Good concentration, minerally finish.
White
1992 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
Small glass, brief note. Sensational bottle. Incredibly fresh, bright and powerful. I think this is the first time I've had the wine, and it's much better than even the best bottles of the 1992 Batard I've had.
White
1999 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Orchard fruit tonight with sensational concentration and length. Very powerful and expressive start-to-finish.
White
2004 Domaine Roulot Meursault Les Tessons Clos de Mon Plaisir France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
92 points
Small taste, brief note. Starts slightly ripe and nutty, but then takes off with a burst of energy and precision toward a long finish. Still nicely fresh. At a great place right now.
White
1989 Gagnard-Delagrange Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Great aromatic start - fresh. vibrant, elegant fruit with trace spice. Flavors slightly more ripe, less fresh, but still very tasty, very elegant. A rare treat to taste Montrachet from a producer no longer producing wine.
White
1999 Etienne Sauzet Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Slightly mature but mostly fresh. This is a real powerhouse with complex flavors unfolding over long finish.
White

90 points
Small glass, brief note. Intense fruit with an intense fruit concentration that is almost sweet, followed by a burst of energy that serves as a refreshing contrast. Very nice.

Small glass, brief note. Mature red cherry and berry with soft, sweet spice. Really great and fun right now.
White
2001 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Lemon and apple and toasted hazelnuts with excellent minerality and moderate depth. Very good now.
White
1992 Louis Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich and buttery with stone fruit and faint tropical hints, but the structure to retain freshness and balance. Very good density, moderate length.
White
2002 Domaine Leroy Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
97 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe and powerful but with the textural complexity to make this long, lush, and superbly nuanced. A super rare treat, one in which the vintage worked amazingly with the Leroy style.
Red
2008 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. All red, surprisingly ripe, great spice. Of course fresh and too young, but charming now.
Red
1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Charming nose showing mature fruit and sweet spice. Similar flavors but slightly less exciting palate that I found a bit firm with a drying finish.
Red
1959 Charles Noellat Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Stinky aromas, very tired. Far more interesting flavors, but still tired. Fun to taste.
White
2001 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Rest cross-section of citrus and orchard fruit with near-perfect textures, great length, moderate weight.
Red
1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
flawed
Small glass, brief note. Second bottle from a different person 20 minutes after the prior bottle. This one came across as far old, quite possibly ha ing experienced heat damage in its life. But definitely an authentic DRC 1988 Richebourg.
Red
1986 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
flawed
Damn! Two bottles of heat damaged DRC Ricebourg 5 minutes apart.
Red
1991 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
flawed
Small glass, brief note. Surprisingly tired.
Red
1999 Domaine Jean Grivot Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Intense power with dense concentration, still slightly reserved and backward. Fruit not eye taking, but here is a spice and mint character that I really like. Needs more time in the cellar, but great raw materials. Very good potential.
Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Bonnes Mares France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Very pretty red fruit, incredibly pure and charming. Expanding finish. Very good now.
Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. While I love pure red cherry and berry, it's the textures that enthrall me. This is so soft and comfy, but with the raw structure and concentration that keeps it going and going through to a long finish. Classic Musigny.
Red
1976 Camille Giroud Corton-Bressandes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
87 points
Small glass, brief note. Fully mature but still charming and enjoyable. Modest length.
Red
1985 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
flawed
Corked.
Red
2005 Nicolas Rossignol Volnay 1er Cru Les Chevrets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Started reductive, which the Paulee format punishes given the inability to taste and revisit a wine over an extended period. Decant.
Red
2007 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Bright red fruit with very good balance and a lighter softness that makes it charming right now.

1961 Morin Pere et fils Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
95 points
I brought this to La Paulee because Francois Labet (from Chateau de la Tour in Vougeot) was attending and this wine was made by his grandfather. Ullage was 5-5.5 cm but color quite dark. Roll the dice? Success! Sweet and intense black fruit with great concentration and super charming reduced mushroom notes. Maybe I am overrating the wine because of its age, but I had so much fun with it in general, particularly serving it to M. Labet.
Red
2007 Domaine Fourrier Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Vieille Vigne France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Sweet and fresh black fruit with moderate structure and overall wonderful balance. Very fun and tasty right now.
Red
1985 Maison Leroy Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
90 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Mature red cherry, hints of spice and leather. Aging nicely, very elegant, probably best to drink up.
Red
1990 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
flawed
Corked.
Red
1993 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
94 points
Served at La Paulee. Dense red and black fruit with great spice finish. Still slightly backward. This had been open a couple of hours before serving.
Red
2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands-Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Extremely concentrated red fruit with lots of baking spice. Very enjoyable (93ish points for now) but nowhere near its peak potential (95?).
Red
1999 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. This didn't work well tonight for La Paulee. IT probably didn't get enough air before serving, and I found it musty, too dense and very backward. In a "normal" setting that would be solved with more time in glass, but the La Paulee format really does not give you that option.
Red
1985 Louis Latour Romanée St. Vivant Les Quatre Journaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
91 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Nicely evolved, moderate weight. Good Vosne spice. I liked this a lot, other experienced tasters liked it even more.
Red
1998 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Seemed soft and superbly elegant to start, then my sip or two finished with great power. I wish I could have tasted this beauty a few hours earlier.
Red
2006 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
96 points
Small taste, late night, brief note. Very ripe red fruit, lots and lots of great spice. Great power and length. A late night highlight.
Red
1998 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
Small glass, late night, brief note. Didn't seem like the most pristine bottle, slightly dirty/ fading on nose and palate.
Red
1990 Joseph Drouhin Clos de la Roche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
87 points
Small glass, late night, brief note. Musty and very mature nose. Very mature red fruit flavors. Nice, but a bit simple.
Red
1996 Joseph Drouhin Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
93 points
Late Paulee tasting, brief note. Red fruit, powerful. Still firmly structured. Expanding finish. Lots of upside. I also tasted the 1999 vintage, but it was the final pour/sip so not representative.
White - Sparkling
2006 Agrapart Champagne Grand Cru Vénus Brut Nature Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru
Late night, brief note. Subtly floral with lots and lots of lemon and a powerful, slightly austere finish. Lots of powerful fruit, with impressive concentration and length. Very refreshing after a long day drinking Burgundy!
