Introduction

Did this blind in two tables of eight. Always an interesting format. Really enjoyed the food tonight - more than the wines!

Flight 1 - Starters and Table 2 wines (13 notes)

White - Sparkling
N.V. Scharffenberger Brut USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County
89 points
Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. I hadn't had this in several years, and i thought this was one of the better examples I've had. This was very nicely yeasty, autolytic, lime, citrus. Good QPR.
White
2014 Grgich Hills Sauvignon Blanc Fumé Blanc USA, California, Napa Valley
88 points
Light straw color. Small pour. Fairly typical California Sauv Blanc; grapefruit, lemongrass, subtle stone fruits, chalk like minerality
White
2014 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
89 points
Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. Same bottle as Chablis28, and I completely agree on his take. Tart lemon, tart citrus, oodles of minerality, medium body, lots of dry extract and plenty oak currently showing. Young, needs a decant. Drank next to a '12 version which was pretty much a carbon copy but a bit more ready.

White
2012 Domaine Jacques Carillon Puligny-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
89 points
Small pour. Same bottle as Chablis28, and I tend to agree this was drinking somewhat better, but still very youthful. Similar in profile, with less tartness to the citrus and white fruits, plenty of minerality, medium body, lots of dry extract and the oak is currently showing. Young. Drank next to a '14 version which was even more youthful.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Veuve Fourny & Fils Champagne Premier Cru Grande Réserve Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
90 points
Small pour. Citrus, firm chalky minerality, more bracing and less finesse than I recall from previous bottles.
White - Sparkling
N.V. A. R. Lenoble Champagne Cuvée Intense Brut France, Champagne
90 points
Small taste from the other table. Straight down the line from my previous notes. I like the style, very nice.
Rosé - Sparkling
N.V. Paul Dethune Champagne Brut Rosé France, Champagne
88 points
Small pour. Medium salmon color. This was ok, but not as good as I recall from past experiences. Cherry, almond, yeast, light with some heat and harshness that impacts the back end.

White - Off-dry
2003 Dönnhoff Norheimer Dellchen Riesling Spätlese Germany, Nahe
88 points
Medium gold color. Small pour over 20 minutes. Light, fusil, lean, feels flabby, white fruits, comes off a little more sweet.
Red
2000 Château Lagrange (St. Julien) France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
92 points
Small pour. Consistent with my note from a year ago. Agree with Chablis28 on this too. Wood, graphite, black raspberry, cassis, earthy, firmish tannins.
Red
2011 Olga Raffault Chinon Les Picasses France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon
88 points
Small taste. This was pretty green with tart cranberry and currants.
Red
1998 Thunder Mountain Star Ruby Bates Ranch USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains
90 points
Small pour. Dill, red berry, medium body, mature plus, cassis, dried wood spice. Surprising.
Red
2008 Betz Family Cabernet Sauvignon Père de Famille USA, Washington, Columbia Valley
87 points
Small taste. Wood, heat, blackberry liqueur.

Small taste, herbal, dill, cassis, kirsch, feels past.

Flight 2 - Blind wines (7 notes)

Red
2008 Andrew Will Champoux Vineyard USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Horse Heaven Hills
89 points
Very dark red/purple color. 2hr decant. Drank 1 glass blind over 30 minutes. This starts off with alcohol, cedar, muted fruit, subtle earth - dank. The palate shows the alcohol and overt wood tones, medium full bodied, dark fruits. The nose eventually came around and there was more of a mixed perfumed of mountain wild flowers and dark berries. My guess was '03 Washington. I've had such mixed results with these wines; for me there is a very narrow sweet spot that I find hard to attain.
Red
2004 Ledson Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Alexander Valley USA, California, Sonoma County, Alexander Valley
84 points
Very dark red/purple color, no bricking. Followed one glass blind for 45 minutes. Really hot, oak, oak, oak, and blackberry liqueur. Guessed 15 year old California Cab. Probably well over the hill - unless this was what they were going for....
Red
1985 Château Canon France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
93 points
Dark red with a 5mm transitionally bricked margin. Drank 1 glass blind over 45 minutes. I suspected this was my wine immediately. Great nose with funk, dried earth, leather, and cigar wrapper, with cherry, raspberry, and floral notes. The palate is nice too, medium bodied, mature and in a great place with leather, black tea, graphite, cigar and dried red cherry and berry. Lovely. 93+ to 94pts. (6.5)
Red
1987 Dominus Estate USA, California, Napa Valley
91 points
Dark red color. Drank one glass blind over an hour plus. Same bottle as Chablis28. I thought this got considerably better with glsss time. Dark red fruits, dried earth, funk, dried wood tones. The tannins are still quite firm, and I agree this was more austere, but extra time paid off here. Didn't commit on this, said old world and older. 91+pt.
Red
2009 Château Paloumey France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc
89 points
Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass blind over an hour. Called young Bordeaux on this. Cedar, dsrker fruits, firm round tannins, youthful, medium bodied.
Red
1994 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon USA, Washington
92 points
Very dark red color. Drank 1 glass blind over an hour. Called Washington, but I thought this had to be fairly young, maybe 10 years or less. A new world elixir of blackberry and cassis, cedar, and holy crap - grippy tannins. Still found it quite appealing.
Red
2008 Lenz Merlot Estate Selection USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork
83 points
Dark red color. Followed one glass blind. This was just plain weird. Didn't know what it was or where it came from. Green, green pepper, angular.
