Napa Trip 2017

Calistoga, CA

Tasted July 23, 2017 - July 24, 2017 by td1836 with 373 views

Introduction

I was able to spend a couple afternoons in Napa on a recent work trip to the area. Most of my time was spent in the north end of the valley because I hadn’t had the opportunity to taste up there before. My favorite part of this trip was being able to see the stylistic differences the winemakers bring to their craft. They each had a different profile, and I appreciated all the wines I tasted. When it comes to cab, I appreciate both the bigger, fruit forward style and the more structured versions. It is a lot of fun to get to taste them all so close together and appreciate their differences. I took very brief notes on each wine, but writing verbose tasting notes is not my strong suit.

Day 1: Jean Edwards Cellars, Mending Wall, Failla, dinner at Bar Terra

Day 2: Tasting with Leah Smith (Myriad/Quivet/Ancillary), EMH with Merrill, Anderson’s Conn Valley, dinner at Bistro Jeanty

Flight 1 - Jean Edwards Cellars (7 notes)

The trip started with a nice visit to the Jean Edwards Cellars co-op tasting room, Wines on First, in downtown Napa. I had been in touch with Karen ahead of time, and while they were back on the east coast and couldn’t be there, she was kind enough to set up a very nice tasting for me with their staff. I tasted through their full line up of wines, and really enjoyed the experiencing the differences that vintage and vineyard played in the outcome of their cabs. These are really well-made wines, with very big-structure that you can immediately tell will age nicely for a long time. My two favorites from this group were the 2013 “74-41” and the 2013 Rutherford G3.

White
2015 Jean Edwards Cellars Sauvignon Blanc Dalla Gasperina Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
This had some tart citrus fruit, which was balanced out by a creamy element on the mid-palate. There was however some oak noticeable on the finish which I didn’t prefer.
Red
2014 Jean Edwards Cellars Cooper's Cuvee USA, California, Napa Valley, Calistoga
Comprised of 95% Petit Sirah, this had a deep purple color in the glass. A bit tight on nose right now. It had a core of dark fruit, boysenberry and black cherry, and really nice length on the finish. Overall tannic and tight right now, but give it 5 years and it should start to open up really nicely.
Red
2014 Jean Edwards Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Yates Family Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder
This fruit come from Mt. Veeder and I believe this is the first vintage from this source for JEC. It had dark fruit and lot of spice on the nose. It was very approachable, with smooth black fruits and medium tannins/structure. Of all the reds tasted, this one was easily the one most ready to drink today.
Red
2013 Jean Edwards Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Stagecoach Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Very dark color, this is huge and extremely tightly wound right now. It shows more of a red fruit profile, and would need a big fatty ribeye to cut through it massive tannic structure if being consumed anytime soon. It was very dry on the finish. Hard for me to judge this wine right now, but I wouldn’t touch this for a decade.
Red
2013 Jean Edwards Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Seventy Four - Forty One Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
This is a blend of fruit from three different areas: Baconbrook Vineyard on Spring Mountain, Stagecoach Vineyard on Prichard Hill and Broken Rock Vineyard near Atlas Peak. Stylistically, I’d say it fell somewhere in between the Yates and Stagecoach bottles. It is a really big wine, but the dark fruit balances well with the tannic structure. After some additional time in the glass, the nose really started opening up and showing some interesting baking spices. Was able to taste this side by side with the 2014, and ended up slightly preferring the 2013 because it had more depth and complexity.
Red
2014 Jean Edwards Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Seventy Four - Forty One Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
More approachable initially than the 2013, it started out by showing more fruit up front. A really nice wine, but after they both sat in the glass for a wine, I slightly preferred the ’13. Nonetheless, this is still a very nice wine.
Red
2013 Jean Edwards Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
Definitely the most complete package of the JEC lineup. This has a velvety smooth texture. I get cherry, cassis, and blackberry along with chocolate and expresso notes. There is tons of stuffing here, but it is still approachable and delicious right now. Fantastic wine!

Flight 2 - Mending Wall Winery (4 notes)

Ahead of the trip I had contacted Will at Rivers-Marie, hoping to set up a tasting with him. Unfortunately he was going to be out of town during my visit. He referred me over to Mending Wall instead, which I was happy about since I hadn't gotten the chance to taste anything from that project yet. The facility and tasting room are very nice, and I enjoyed a private tasting with Amy who was wonderful. My only disappointment was they weren't pouring the Petit Sirah and I was really excited to try that based on everything I had heard. I did picked a bottle anyways to have in a few years.

White
2015 Mending Wall Stone on Stone USA, California, Napa Valley
This is a white blend made up of 75% Sauv Blanc and 25% Semillon. It had an expressive nose with lots of tropical notes. I got apricot, stone fruit, and some bitter fruit pit. The wine had an oily texture.
Red
2013 Mending Wall Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
Deep, dark color. Great depth of dark fruit, some brown sugar, really long on the finish. The tannins are very big right now and the fruit is still very much primary. Needs a lot of air if consumed now.

Red
2014 Mending Wall Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley
Same dark color and a very similar overall profile to the 2013 tasted side by side. I found the '14 to have more delicate fruit and a smoother finish. Definitely a big, rich, fruity cab. I preferred this vintage.
Red
2014 Mending Wall Mortar & Stone USA, California, Napa Valley
This is a blend of Syrah, Zinfandel, and a little Petit Sirah. Very ripe fruit on the nose with a touch of heat showing through. Round fruit which a found too sweet. A dark purple color. It wasn't my favorite, which could have been influenced by tasting the cabs before this.

Flight 3 - Failla Winery (6 notes)

I signed up to do the tour and cave tasting at Failla based on recommendations from the board, and because I thought some nice Sonoma-based Pinot and Chardonnay would be a good change of pace from all the big, rich cabs I'd be drinking the rest of the trip. Failla is the home of Ehren Jordan, where he expresses his love for cool climate Pinot, Chardonnay, and Syrah. We started the tour in a quaint old house/tasting room, then moved outside to view the crush pad, and eventually made our way into the caves for the bulk of the tasting. It was cool to see them experimenting with some concrete eggs in their aging process. Also interesting to find a Napa site that isn't doing any Cab. I liked the style here, especially enjoying the Keefer Ranch Pinot and the Hudson Vineyard Syrah. The Chardonnays were good, but a tad rich in style to what I'm preferring these days.

White
2015 Failla Chardonnay Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
This saw 25% new oak, 25% neutral oak, and 50% concrete. Full fruit, rich body, but low oak on the finish which I appreciated. It had low to medium acidity (I could have used some more). Good, definitely California.
White
2015 Failla Chardonnay Haynes Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Coombsville
This comes from the Coombsville area in Napa. It is bigger, tarter, and has fuller fruit compared to the Hudson Vineyard. I preferred the other.
Red
2015 Failla Pinot Noir Keefer Ranch USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Keefer Ranch has always been a favorite of mine (I love what Ed Kurtzman makes from there at Sandler). This bottle from Failla was no different, and my favorite of the tasting. This was light and delicate, with spicy red fruit and a very smooth texture. I get lots of tart cherry, and the long finish was complemented by a nice dusty component.
Red
2015 Failla Pinot Noir Singler Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Also coming from Russian River Valley, this wine has rounder/richer fruit flavors, more bing cherry, just a more ripe fruit profile compared to the Keefer Ranch. Good for a sip, but not my preferred style.
Red
2014 Failla Syrah Estate Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Fort Ross - Seaview
Light bodied, light color, nose is filled with cinnamon and a touch of red hots candy. Good tannic structure, but in a very light style for a Syrah.
Red
2015 Failla Syrah Hudson Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley
Much darker color and more typical Syrah profile. Black and blue fruit with a nice tannic backbone.

Flight 4 - Myriad/Quivet/Ancillary with Leah Smith (7 notes)

For the first tasting of Day 2, I met up with Leah Smith at the Envy Winery in Calistoga. Mike was in the back working, but popped in a few times to say hello and chat. I even had the privilege of meeting one of their daughters and their very energetic dog. Leah shared the story of how Mike got into the wine business by working for free under Thomas Brown the first few harvests while they still lived in Oregon, the moving to Napa for an offer to be Thomas' assistant wine maker. From there it was a bunch of hard work learning and perfecting his craft, and eventually starting Myriad as his own portfolio wine. Receiving a number of high scores on his wines elevated his status in the industry, then everyone wanted to work with him. Today, he is making wine for around 10 different labels. I also really enjoyed talking to Leah about some of the business aspects of running their labels, and heard some more about their recent land purchase in Calistoga and their future estate plans.

I have been buying the Becklyn wines for the past three years, but only recently started buying some Myriad, so I was very excited to get to sit down and taste these wines. Going in, I knew nothing about the Ancillary label, so that was a nice surprise getting to taste some Pinot and Chardonnay from Sangiacomo, in addition to the Cabs, Syrah, and Semillon. One of my favorite tastings of the trip because of the variety of wines which were poured, all of which were fantastic.

White
2016 Myriad Cellars Sémillon McGah Family Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford
Round and soft texture, citrus mixed with some sweeter tropical fruits. I thought this fell on the lower side of the acidity scale. It was a nice change from the typical Napa Sauv Blanc.

White
2015 Ancillary Cellars Chardonnay Sangiacomo Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
This chardonnay had a great lighter style with citrus, pineapple, and minerality. Even though the weight was light, the flavors were full and rich, coming across much like a Chenin Blanc. My favorite Chardonnay tasted on the trip.
Red
2014 Ancillary Cellars Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast
I've always enjoyed Sangiacomo pinot fruit, and this did not disappoint. Rich with great depth, soft red and dark fruits, violets, and a bit of a stemy note on the finish.

Red
2015 Myriad Cellars Syrah Sangiacomo Vineyard USA, California, Sonoma County, Petaluma Gap
Fruit forward, dark and bold. A little barnyard funk on the nose, along with pepper and herbs. Very round and balanced.
Red
2015 Quivet Cellars Syrah Kenefick Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley
I get some cinnamon on the nose along with dark cherries dipped in chocolate. Compared to the Myriad Sangiocomo, this was not a lively and vibrant, but still a very nice wine.

Red
2015 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley USA, California, Napa Valley
Plush round black and blue fruit, very fruit forward and sweet on the mid-palate. Some oak showing on the finish. It's rich and layered, but definitely a big fruity Napa cab.
Red
2015 Quivet Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Kenefick Ranch USA, California, Napa Valley
The wine has such great depth both in smell and taste. It is rich, with wonderful blueberry and cassis mixed with crushed stone. A really long finish leaving me wanting more. My favorite of the tasting.

Flight 5 - EMH Vineyards with Merrill Lindquist (2 notes)

I had the privilege of being invited over to Merrill Lindquist's house to drink some wine and share some good conversation with her. It was so cool to hear her story and the unlikely path she followed to end up making the Black Cat Cabernet. Her house has an awesome view out the back of the vineyards and valley floor, and she walked me around the vines talking about how she evaluates everything throughout the growing season. We also spent a lot of time talking through the process she goes through to select the blend of the different barrels each year, as how the Special Selection and new "Sparkles" bottles are differentiated.

Merrill decided to opened a 2013 Black Cat and the 2014 "Sparkles Selection" for my visit. Both had been open and decanting since the morning (about 5-6 hours in the decanter). She said she hadn't check in on the "Sparkles" in a while, so was excited to do so. If you've had Merrill's wines before, you know her style is not the typical fruit forward, big oak cab. The wines are pretty, pure, with very clean fruit and no oak at all coming through. We enjoyed the wines over the course of two hours, and they opened up and became even more nuanced the longer they were in the glass.

Red
2013 EMH Cabernet Sauvignon Black Cat USA, California, Napa Valley
A dark red/purple color. This has a great juicy factor, high toned (in relation to the other Cabs I tasted on this trip), with lots of red fruit mixed in with the black fruit. Nice tannic structure. Merrill said that for a while this had shut down and wasn't showing well, but it has started to come back around. I thought it was tasting wonderful today after the few hours in the decanter.
Red
2014 EMH Cabernet Sauvignon Black Cat Sparkles Selection USA, California, Napa Valley
Almost identical in visual appearance to the Black Cat. This wine has lots of layers and is an extremely pure expression of Cabernet. It comes from a single non-new oak barrel, so there is no noticeable oak influence. It's big and juicy like the regular black cat, but the floral component is what really differentiates this wine.

Flight 6 - Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards (5 notes)

I set this tour up based on good online feedback and recommendations from this board. The winery sits part of the way up onto Howell Mountain, in a little valley within the mountain range. It has a very secluded feel and definitely off the beaten path. I ended up being the only appointment, so I had a one on one experience with Jeremy, their tasting room/tour manager. We started in the tasting room (with some chardonnay), then rode a golf cart up the hill towards the caves, viewing the vineyards along the way. The majority of the time was spent at a seated tasting inside the nice caves. They provided a very nice plate of cheese and nuts to go with the wines during the tasting.

The overall experience was very nice, and Jeremy and I had some really good conversation about wine, family, work, and his plans to get into the wine making business. The wines were good, definitely big, but somewhat generic or "typical" of Napa. I didn’t walk away with the same level of appreciation for the uniqueness of these wines like I did at all my other visits on this trip. I also felt like the pricing on these wines was way too high for their relative quality. Their Napa cabernet and Eloge were both $120 at the winery, which I felt was way too high. I know these can be obtained at retail for a lot less.

White
2014 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Chardonnay USA, California, Napa Valley
Carneros fruit and no malolactic fermentation. There is some oak presence here, but absent of the buttery flavors. Pineapple and apple flavors.
Red
2014 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Right Bank USA, California, Napa Valley
74% Cab Frank, 26% Merlot. Spice on the nose from the cab frank, plush fruit, floral, medium body, delicate and smooth on the finish. I thought this was nice.
Red
2013 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Éloge USA, California, Napa Valley
64% Cab Sauv, 22% Cab Frank, 11% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Dark and spicy fruit, very plush mid-palate. Very smooth finish.
Red
2014 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Reserve USA, California, Napa Valley
Dark reddish black in color, with lots of deep dark fruits on the nose. It's a big wine with good tannic structure, but not so tightly wound that it isn't accessible right now. Sweet raspberry and bing cherry. The oak is nicely balanced, and while the alcohol is very high (16.2%) it doesn’t come across hot. I recently opened a 2009 of this wine, and it was totally different. The '09 had a much lower 14.6% alcohol, and it presented as a more restrained and balanced wine.
Red
2014 Anderson's Conn Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Signature USA, California, Napa Valley
This is selected from the "best barrels" of the estate cab. Bigger concentration with blue and black fruits. Definitely a lot more oak on the finish. Big tannins and a little heat coming through. I found the Estate Reserve more balanced and preferred it to the Signature.

Wonderful trip with some really great, unique experiences.
