Flight 1 (21 notes)

White
2011 Bernard Dugat-Py Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Served blind. I found this fairly crisp in style, almost Chablis like. The nose has lots of youthful green apple and mineral. Moderately concentrated and high acid on the palate. Very young.

Much leaner than an '09 PYCM C-C tasted side by side. This is quite good but currently showing leaner and as a result I taste more mineral and sea shell than white fruit. Driving acids make for a high energy wine.

2002 Marquis de Laguiche (Joseph Drouhin) Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

A bit golden in color, and sure enough the nose is tired and more advanced than it should be. You can taste the richness and concentration, but the palate is tired and prematurely oxidized.
White
2005 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru

This is on and showing very young with layers of crisp white fruit. The palate is taut with fresh acids that carry the round, layered white fruit.
White
1996 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
96 points
A spectacular village wine. Towering nose of rich and concentrated aromas with so much layering. Mature, yet fresh white fruit, with a minty character. The wine has incredible density and richness, while maintaining a weightless presence. Long, ethereal finish. Interesting as an 02 tasted earlier in the day at the Zachy's auction was tired.
White
1991 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Brought by Alex from the Domaine to our dinner. A wow nose of maturing but still fresh orchard fruit with a great herbal/minty accent. The palate is unbelievably fresh, vibrant and buoyant. Mineral-filled finish. Impressively good.

1971 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru
88 points
Mature aromas of earthy black cherry, mushroom, leather and game. Lovely on the palate with good balance, though a bit simple and short.
Red
1988 Charles Mortet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
flawed
Stewed aromas. Palate is more fresh with good mature fruit. But this seems off?

A wow wine. Stunning nose of dried black cherry and plum layers of meat and spice. The palate has moderate concentration with a velvety texture. Very intense flavors with lots of complexity in the meat, spice, herb and stem notes.
Red
1993 Domaine Trapet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted along side the '01, and this '93 is showing much better with more nuance and complexity. Reaffirms the notion that Chambertin especially from traditional producers needs lots of time. Amazing, deep nose with meat and spice. The palate is concentrated with so much intense meat and spice. Lots of rich concentration, but great lift and precision too.

2001 Domaine Trapet Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted along side the '93, which showed much more nuanced. This '01 is still brooding and needs much more time. There is plenty of rich, meaty black fruit but not showing much in the way of nuance of complexity. Upside from here.
Red
1996 Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
97 points
An unreal nose that has so much depth, richness, intensity and layering -- 100 point nose. The palate follows with rich concentrated black cherry fruit that is very powerful, yet packaged in an overall velvety frame. Intense notes of spice and meat. Wow.

2000 Claude Dugat Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Not as nuanced or refined as the 96 Claude Dugat Charmes or the 00 Dugat-Py Charmes tasted side by side. The nose has loads of black cherry but its fairly non-delineated. Big and extracted black cherry fruit with good balance freshness. Nice spice accents. Good but a step or two behind it's flight mates.

This is a very big, rich and extracted wine. Bold black cherry fruit with intense spice notes. Delicious and perhaps a bit too obvious. But that is nitpicking an excellent wine.
Red
1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Corked.

Tons of baby fat still on this wine, but approachable for a GC. Big nose of delicious spice filled cherry pie. Really intense and prominent spice notes. The palate shows young, decadent fruit. Structure is there but pretty cloaked by the fruit -- fun to drink now, but should only improve with time.

Great lifted rich red cherry nose, that is so pure and rich, but a bit simple. Kind of a primary and four square wine. Where does it go from here?

2012 Olivier Bernstein Chambertin-Clos de Bèze France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Big, rich, primary and extracted aromas with meaty spice and some medicinal herb. The palate is crazy rich and explosive with so much flavor and intensity. Roasted meat and spice accents. Pretty delicious and approachable. This seems very Beze to me.

2006 Domaine Perrot-Minot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Lots of rich black fruit with some clay and earth tones. Pretty backward and brooding right now. Upside from here.
Red
2004 Domaine Joseph Roty Griotte-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Griotte-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted side-by-side with the '05. There is a ton of richness here which helps cloak some underlying green notes. The biggest flaw is some bitterness (which I associate with vintage) in the back end.

Tasted side by side with the '04, and this is clearly the better wine. Still fairly primary with a big, rich and spicy nose. The palate has great concentration and powerful fruit, but is already showing some grace and refinement. Better in 5-10 years, I suspect.
