The 3 wines in this heat were used to make a blend of the infamous Rudi version of Mouton Rothschild 1945. We were led to believe that we were tasting a rare bottle that not that this experiment were going on.
The Mouton 1945 was made of 25% Cos 88, 25% Palmer 90 and 50% Abreu.
It was a very strange experiment but it actually showed an aged Bordeaux wine with clear signs of age but also lots of fruit depth. Very interesting and fun to try :-)
We started with the Mouton 45 and were afterwards told the truth about the experiment. Afterwards we got to try to other wines individually.
Red
1988 Château Cos d'Estournel
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Dusty and fragile with some fruit left but also some bitter chocolate.
Harsh tannins and not very pleasurable on its own.
Red
1990 Château Palmer
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
Manure and barnyard with a lovely and classic fruit of black currant (and leaves).
Feels kind of raw in its expression and has some rust, iron and other metallic notes to it.
Still, a very pleasurable wine!
Red
2000 Abreu Cabernet Sauvignon Madrona Ranch
USA, California, Napa Valley
Beautiful lush flavors of sweet black currants mixed with coffee. The tannins are slightly rough but not in a disturbing way.
Lovely intensity and a great wine!

Red
1992 Yarra Yering Dry Red N°2
Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley
Warm tomato plant and just packed with black currant fruit that are cool in its profile.
There is a pronounced sweetness but still a lot of acidity which maintains a lovely balance.
Amazing to try such a rare wine!
Red
1988 Penfolds Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707
Australia, South Australia
Packed with fresh juicy young fruit. Almost blackberry in style. Has a lot of oak influence which is pronounced especially it the large amount of coconut that are present.
Still, an almost wild wine that is amazing to try!
Red
1979 Henschke Cyril Henschke
Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Eden Valley
Juicy, clean, creamy cool black currant fruit with a touch of menthol. The balance in this wine is just stunning and just a very lovely spicy aftertaste.
What an amazing bottle this was. It was really shining on the day! Very impressive.
Flight 4 (4 notes)
Red
1982 Château Ducru-Beaucaillou
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Dark plum and coffee flavors with a very nice acidity and a lovely aftertaste.
Really showing nicely right now and seems to be mature.
Red
1982 Château Cos d'Estournel
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
Sweet dark black currant fruit with an amazing intensity. Very juicy and clean flavors with a nice complexity also. Lots of spices, tobacco and cedar but the fruit is still dominating.
Huge wine and it is very close to its peak!
Red
1982 Château Gruaud Larose
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Juicy and sweet fruit but also some harsh tannins and a significant amount of Brett.
There was a lot of discussion about this wine being defective but the owner claimed that this is just how this wine performs and is supposed to taste.
Red
1982 Château Léoville Las Cases
France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien
Fresh and very "clean" fruit with an amazing balance and intensity. This wine is still extremely young but the fruit of plums and black currants are just amazingly charming.
A HUGE wine that keeps impressing me.
