Flight 1 (64 notes)

White
2016 Domaine François Mikulski Meursault 1er Cru Les Poruzots France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Rich, slightly off balance, finishing slightly sweet. Good weight. Ok overall.
White
2002 Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich baked apple with good+ weight, just more mature and butterscotchy than I’d prefer at this age. Very good Villages, just not very good Coche.
White
2002 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
91 points
Small glass, brief note. Very rich with impressive concentration. More mature than I’d prefer for Grand Cru at this age.
White
2012 Philippe Colin Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe, rich apple and some baked apple with very good density. Impressive, just slightly too fleshy and borderline sweet on finish for my preferences.
White
2010 Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe apple and pear start-to-finish with good density to start, even better on finish. Somehow both subtle and powerful. Truly great now.
White
2011 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Grandes Ruchottes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Magnum. Floral start with an intriguing combination of fresh apple and baked apple. Good weight, very good length. Very good now.

2002 Etienne Sauzet Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. This has been a frustratingly inconsistent wine through the years, and I’d expect a 3L to be great. But this was simple, with good weight and length, but nowhere near the best bottles I’ve had. So frustrating.
White
2011 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. So much fresh apple, wonderfully bright and energetic. Good+ weight, very good length. Very good now.

2002 Domaine & Selection Meursault Coche-Dury France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Magnum. Rich and fleshy with medium weight. Good now. From Vireuils.
White
2012 Domaine Sylvain Pataille Bourgogne Blanc Le Chapitre France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
87 points
Small glass, brief note. Clean and crisp, very bright and easy to enjoy now.
White
2008 Domaine Ramonet Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich and opulent with tropical hints, but so easily enough acidity and minerality to keep it bright. I heard there was another bottle around that might not have been as fresh.
White
2007 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. So rich and dense, even backward to start, but incredibly vibrant middle--to-finish. Great length. Excellent right now.
White
1995 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
91 points
Small glass, brief note. Dense and still nicely firm, just less complex and texturally exciting than I expect from well aged Raveneau.
White
2004 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru
96 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich now, incredibly balanced now. So much substance and nuance unfolding in my limited 3/4 ounce pour.

1990 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe and very spice red cherry, aging slowly and gracefully. Spice throughout, while dominating nowhere. Wonderful balance and finesse.
Red
2000 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. serving alongside the amazing 2002. Mature red cherry with good weight, better length and even better balance. Excellent, lacy textures. At its peak.
Red
2002 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Served alongside the 2000. Complex array of red cherry and berry aromas and flavors with layered character and a long, long, long finish. Still upside from here.
Red
1998 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Lots of black cherry and plum with roasted and smoked meat. Very powerful, nearly balanced. Very good length. I felt this was something like a 92-93 point wine tonight with just so much more in reserve. I have one bottle in the cellar, that i hope to hold to 2025 or later.
White
2008 Maison Leroy Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Lacy with lemon and apple. Still bright with good weight. A very successful 1998 at this stage for the vintage.
White
2008 Domaine Bachelet-Monnot Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. Both rich and complex, while wonderfully textured. Long finish. Way exceeded my expectations.
White
2012 Henri Boillot Corton-Charlemagne France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. Lots of apple and pear throughout, with peach background hints. Linear and precise for the vintage. Very good weight. 92-93 points.
White
1997 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
90 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich and unctuous, so easy to enjoy. Apple pie and honeycomb. Best to drink up in this format, smaller formats are likely less exciting.
White
2017 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru
91 points
Small glass, brief note. Bright apple throughout with background lemon peel. Very good length, nicely energetic.
White
2013 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
93 points
Rich and powerful with lots of apple followed by peach hints. Subtle spice throughout. Very enjoyable, but the Bâtard-Montrachet in the next glass was better. This might benefit from a little more cellar time.
White
2013 Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils Bâtard-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Complex and rich orchard fruit with so much concentration (clearly old vine) and balance. Certainly better than the Chevalier-Montrachet served alongside, and Alex agreed.
Red
2011 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. From 3L. Good red cherry and berry, even more/ better savory Asian five spice. Good weight and length, very good+ balance. Already entering its peak drinking window, 2019-2036.
Red
2004 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Very charming array of red fruits. Age appropriate level of maturity without any bitter/ green character or the advanced maturation of so many 2004s. Wonderful balance with good weight and length.
Red
1985 Maison Leroy Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
91 points
Small glass, brief note. More black vs red cherry with some background sauvage. Wonderfully mature and well balanced. My best experience ever with his wine.
Red
1985 Maison Leroy Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Served alongside the Charmes--Chambertin, this wine has more density, but came across as slightly dirty, not quite pristine, and getting tired. Likely a bottle that suffered poor conditions at some point in the past 30 years.
Red
1990 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
91 points
In great Cros P flight. Lush black cherry throughout with good weight and sweet spice. Faint bitter hint on finish. Very good overall, but much less complex than any of the others in the flight.
Red
2002 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
94 points
In great Cros P flight. Rich, ripe and fleshy, yet this still manages to come across as regal and understated. Wonderful textures and length with good+ length.
Red
2000 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
96 points
In great Cros P flight. Great, as always. Well not always, since Thursday's bottle was sub-par, but this is a wine that is near perfectly balanced, and stays that way as all its red-fruited complexity unfolds. The star of the flight.
Red
2001 Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
93 points
In great Cros P flight. So much savory spice here, either alongside or in front of good red cherry. Very good weight, lots of bright energy, good+ length. Very good now.
Red
2002 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. I haven't had this wine in many years, and wow, what a treat. Dense black fruit that comes across as so rich with enticingly spiced braised meat. Still a little backward, but so enchanting today. Certainly 95-96+ point potential.
Red
1979 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Clos Vougeot France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
92 points
Small lgass, brief note. Fully mature red fruit with faint spice and equal volume of earth and mushroom. slightly dirty, but in the good way. Charming.
Red
1999 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru
Small glass, brief note. Lots of red cherry and berry in complex combination with black and blue berry aromas and flavors as well. Cam across as slightly backward and begging for more air, but this is long and complex. Certainly 94-95+ point potential.

1972 La Pousse d'Or Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Bousse d'Or France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
93 points
Small glass, brief note. A wine that way exceeded any expectations, but I imagine the 5L format probably helped. Dried rose petals, mature red cherry, lots of slowly reduced mushrooms. Good weight, better length, great balance. So elegant and old school.

Small glass, brief note. From 3L. Ripe apple and lemon curd comes across as ripe and fun with good+ weight and balance, ending with a fun, soft finish.
White
2011 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Cross-section of apple flavors and aromas with background peach. Very powerful and concentrated, even if not amazingly complex. If served blind, I'd have thought Grand Cru based on density. Very good now.
Red
2009 Comte Armand Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
89 points
Small glass, brief note. Rich red fruit aromas, softens middle forward. Good+ weight, good/moderate weight. Charming now, certainly in its peak drinking window.
Red
2007 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Mazis-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Small glass, brief note. Starts out ripe and charming, then explodes with density and an unfolding array of complex flavors. Wow, one of tonight's highlights.
Red
2006 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Cros Parantoux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Small glass, brief note. Seemed tired. clearly an off bottle based on previous, better bottles.
Red
2009 Domaine Bruno Clair Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
92 points
Small glass, brief note. Ripe black fruit with good spicebox note. Firm tannins, but just in the background. Very good density and depth, but I expect still a few years away from its peak drinking window.

1993 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
94 points
In great Echezeaux flight, this was the star. Complex array of red and black cherry with earth and robust spice. Very good density, depth and length. Seamless start-to-finish. I haven't had this wine in at least a decade, but it is so much better now than ever before. No surprise, that is 1993.
Red
1999 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
In great Echezeaux flight. Ripe and powerful, not quite as expressive or nuanced as I might hope, but so much here.
Red
2002 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
92 points
In great Echezeaux flight. Red cherry with savory spice, maturing gracefully. Good density and weight, very good balance. Very good now, I don't expect a lot of upside from here.
Red
1999 Domaine Leroy Corton-Renardes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
94 points
Small glass, brief note. Floral with bold red fruit throughout. Dense, fleshy and long. Wonderful Grand Cru, but let me nit pick...it seemed more Vosne than Corton.
Red
1996 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
95 points
Small glass, brief note. Age appropriate maturity with dense red fruit, earth hints and so much spice, all providing layers of glorious complexity.

2009 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Aux Brûlées France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru
Small glass, brief note. Fascinating contrast to the 1996 just tasted. Riper and probably dense, but this is just a baby and the full breadth of its charm has yet to reveal itself. Great (also 95 point?) potential.
Red
2003 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
96 points
In 00/01/03 vertical, this was the star. Cornucopia of black and red fruit with impressive density, yet also finesse. Both sweet and savory spice. Very long, persistent finish.
Red
2001 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
95 points
In 00/01/03 vertical. Lots of red cherry and berry start-to-finish with good+ weight and great length. Not a powerhouse, but wonderfully finessed. Slightly better/ brighter than another bottle (from same case) from 2 years ago.
Red
2000 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

In 00/01/03 vertical. Rich, ripe and fruit driven with charming background spice. Good+ density, while perfectly balanced and finessed. Alluring.

Magnum. Corked. Ouch.
Red
1943 Léonce Bocquet Corton France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Wow, much more than still alive. Good depth, lots of complexity. Certainly a little dirty, but in the good way. Very enjoyable, and a great treat.
Red
2003 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Musigny Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Dense and meaty with very good concentration, but the ripeness of the vintage is slightly too pronounced. Fun and very enjoyable, but not perfectly balanced like the great vintages of this wine.
Red
1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
90 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. Charming combination of fruit and earth, slightly fresher nose vs palate. Good weight and balance, but less complex than the La Tâche I dream abot.
Red
1966 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
95 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. Dried rose petal with spice and slightly more red fruit than earth. On the delicate side, but so layered and complex, even unfolding in the small, late night La Paulée pour.
Red
1969 Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. Good but on the funky side. Most likley much better a few decades back,
Red
1985 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru
94 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. Ripe and powerful, shockingly bright with enough matured character unfolding as well. Impressive weight.
Red
2009 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru
Late night, small glass, brief note. So rich and dense but dominated with its youthful exuberance today. So much potential, but not yet today, especially in this magnum format, but you can tell this will be fantastic.
Red
1978 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Late night, small glass, brief note. Lots of spice, red cherry, cooked mushroom with good+ weight and length, but also slightly dirty. Still, very enjoyable.
Red
1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru
91 points
Late night, small glass, brief note. Mature red cherry and berry with sumptuous textures, good nuance and good+ balance. Not as exciting as the bottle tasted at last year's La Paulée gala.
Red

Slightly corked.

1966 Felix Clerget Corton-Renardes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
90 points
Great color, great fill. Fully mature Burgundy with enough dense black fruit combined with as much earth, some woodsy spice and braised meat. Clean and classic with very good weight. My late night bottle for La Paulée, poured with Thibault Clerget (Felix was his great uncle).
