Introduction

It was time to look at Lafon Rochet after a year or so. Frank and Wayne joined me and we worked our way through them then tidied up the 70 with a rack of lamb

Flight 1 (9 notes)

Red
1970 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Gamey, funky, oxidised with menthol, leather, stewed fruits are black over red, plenty of spice, a little mushroom, nail varnish remover. Juicy, a touch of sourness to the slightly stewed black and red fruit compote. Plenty of talc textured drying tannins, slight alcohol warmth here as well. Opens with time. Nice.
Red
1979 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Biscuit, wet stone and earth, autumn leaves, brambles and wild blackcurrant. Smells 'wet', touch of pyrazine. And the wetness translates to the palate, medium plus intensity acidity is a little sharp, plentiful tannins are drying and a little grainy, slight unripe blackcurrant; not volatile just a bit unripe. Leather, earth. Interesting.
Red
1990 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Medium minus intensity aromas initially but grows with time, showing blackcurrant, sweet spice, a little aniseed. After a while it shows cassis, plum and leather in support as well as a little tomato leaf, slight cream and Christmas cake. Changes in the glass to show cedar, very slight caramel as well. In the mouth it's juicy, sweetly fruited then a wash of chalky tannins take over the palate, fruit persists with a little cream, alcohol warmth lends spice, long, finishes, very slightly bitter, savoury. Okay.
Red
1995 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Meaty, slightly Bretty, savoury, leather, wet earth, brambles and blackcurrant, a little bonfire smoke, sweet spice, the gamey/funky notes grow with time. Medium plus intensity acidity, flavours are a touch muted here, plenty of woody, talc textured tannins close down the palate, touch of Asian spice especially star anise on the finish. Hmm.

Red
1996 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Aromas of bramble, blackcurrant, a little plum and cream back this, quite clean and fruit driven after the 1995, cedar, spiced. Medium plus intensity acidity, brambly with blackcurrant and plums which wrestles with the grainy, chalky tannins drying grip, both persist long. Yum.

2000 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Cream, vanilla, slight pyrazine, chalky minerality, black hued fruits; plums and blackcurrant, cedar, savoury spices, little alcohol prickle. Juicy, sweetly fruited with blackcurrant and plums, floury textured tannins persist long, cedar, a little plain chocolate, cream. Very nice, opens in the glass and gains weight. Balanced. Lovely.

Red
2010 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Young, fresh, crunchy blackcurrant tends to cassis, a little chalky minerality, sweet spice, a touch of mint here as well. medium plus intensity acidity, hard woody tannins are chalky textured and, well, unforgiving, fruit does persist beneath this. Times and plenty of it for me.

2012 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Toast, sweet spice, cedar all over plums and slight blackcurrant but the oak is quite dominant on the nose. medium plus intensity acidity, toasty, drying, grainy, chewy tannins, persistent, plummy fruit, cream, a little alcohol warmth. Okay.

2015 Château Lafon-Rochet France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe
From Coravin. Aromas of cream, vanilla, sweet spice, slight alcohol prickle joins crunchy blackcurrant, plums and chocolate, polished. Medium plus intensity acidity, sweetly fruited, polished here as well, blackcurrant. Tannins are drying but quite finely textured, travels long and hand in hand with the fruit. Young but shows promise. Nice.

Closing

Very nice. I do like Lafon Rochet - they seem to be getting better and better.
