Introduction

Justin organized to drink a bunch of semi affordable wines. It was really educational and fun.

Flight 1 - Mostly Champagne (5 notes)

The 12 Dom Perignon is the real deal!

White - Sparkling
2014 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Grands Terroirs de Chardonnay France, Champagne
92 points
Medium expressive nose displaying ripe apple fruit, marzipan, light caramel, sweet spices and limestone. Medium concentration, nicely layered yellow fruit, medium generous and medium fine mousse, good balance, medium acidity, good mineral expression, and a medium to long ripe yellow fruit driven finish. Very well made but not exciting.

N.V. Georges Laval Champagne Premier Cru Brut Nature Cumières France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru
90 points
Exotic nose that I get in natural wines. Apricot, peach, sweet spices and earth. Medium concentration, very ripe apricot, fine medium generous mousse, medium acidity, medium mineral, and a medium to long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with apricot preserve and sweet spices at the end. The fruit is ripe which gives very sweet impression but the finish is really dry and almost harsh. Feels really natural and interesting.

White - Sparkling
2009 Pol Roger Champagne Vintage Brut France, Champagne
93 points
Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe rich yellow and white fruit, brioche, a hint of crème brulee, sweet spices and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered rich yellow fruit, rich and ripe but showing a good balance, fine generous mousse, medium acidity, medium mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with burnt sugar and brioche at the end. This is a rich and concentrated Champagne.

White - Sparkling
N.V. Schramsberg Vineyards J. Schram USA, California, North Coast
90 points
Medium complex nose displaying generous apple fruit, steel, a hint of brioche and mineral. Excellent concentration, packed apple fruit, bright acidity, steely mineral, and a medium long apple fruit driven finish with steely mineral at the end. If tasted blind, the nose is very Champagne thought not terribly complex but the palate is a bit one dimensional. It is technically correct and perhaps better made than the Laval but not as interesting. Least favorite of the flight.
White - Sparkling
2012 Dom Pérignon Champagne France, Champagne
98 points
Expressive nose displaying incredibly concentrated rich yellow and white fruit, granny smith, lemon curd, strong brioche, white flowers, pepper, sweet spices and strong limestone mineral. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of perfectly ripe yellow and white fruit, very fine generous mousse, rich and opulent yet perfect balance and beautiful detail, perfect amount of acidity, strong mineral, and a seamless unbelievably long finish with brioche and white flowers at the end. Justin prefers this over the 12. I slightly prefer the 08 for the elegance and finesse which I have never experienced in any young Dom Perignons. The comparison is identical to the 08 vs 12 Cristals, perfect balance vs incredible concentration, perhaps Chevalier vs Batard. The 12 combines the 02 and 08. My first 12 Dom Perignon and I am a believer.

Flight 2 - Rose (1 note)

This was incredibly delicious.

Rosé
2020 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Rosé de Pinot Noir France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
93 points
Simply delicious and yummy. Some bubble yum, pink and yellow fruits. Not showing much red berries. It is nothing profound but so enjoyable and delicious, a great summer quaffer.

Flight 3 - Mostly white Burgundy (4 notes)

The 19 Dauvissat village is truly impressive.

White
2019 Giovanni Rosso Etna Bianco Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC
91 points
Expressive linear white fruit, mint, beeswax and limestone. Cool and refreshing, medium concentration, medium acidity, medium mineral, and a medium long finish. This should go really well with a grilled fish or oysters. Really easy drinking and refreshing.
White
2018 Alice et Olivier De Moor Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
89 points
Super ripe and sweet. The screams natural wine but not so much Chablis. Very spritzy that doesn’t go away. The nose profile is closer to Jura. Interesting but not what I want in a Chablis.
White
2019 Patrick Piuze Chablis 1er Cru Vaulorent Quatre Chemins France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru
89 points
Medium expressive nose displaying very ripe yellow fruit, a bit straightforward. Medium concentration, lacking acidity. Another wine with "natural" wine feel.
White
2019 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis France, Burgundy, Chablis
93 points
Expressive nose displaying perfectly ripe white fruit, lemon curd, pear, beeswax and limestone. Excellent concentration, nicely layered perfectly ripe white fruit, rich and generous but also excellent balance, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long concentrated delicious white fruit driven finish with beeswax at the end. If tasted blind, I would have guess as a Raveneau as it displays generous fruit. Truly excellent village Chablis. Perhaps the best village Chablis of my life. I will need to try the 1ers and GCs soon.

Flight 4 - White Burgundy (4 notes)

White
2018 Coche-Dury Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
92 points
Medium expressive nose displaying rich yellow fruit with a hint of white, lemon curd, golden delicious, pear, beeswax, sweet spices and strong mineral. I don’t notice much of Coche flint. Very good concentration, nicely layered rich white and yellow fruit, clean and delicious, bright acidity, strong mineral, and a medium long rich yellow and white fruit driven finish with a hint of beeswax at the end. The fruit expression is very Coche, i.e. pure, delicious and generous, but not showing much Coche flint.

2018 Rapet Père et Fils Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc
91 points
Very well made Bourgogne Blanc, white fruit dominates, good freshness and balance.
White
2019 Domaine Laroche Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
94 points
Expressive complex nose displaying ripe yellow and white fruit, lemon curd, white peach, yellow peach, very floral, mint, heavy cream/lactic, beeswax, a hint oak and earthy mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of ripe yellow fruit, rich and deeply toned, bright acidity, medium mineral, and a long ripe yellow fruit driven finish with beeswax and butter at the end. This is a big scale Les Clos that feels “modern and ripe”.
White
2017 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Clos de la Barre France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
92 points
Expressive nose displaying rich concentrated yellow fruit with a hint of white, lemon curd, apple, honeysuckle and wet stone. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of opulent yellow and white fruit, rich and oily but also showing very good balance, perfect amount of acidity and strong mineral, and a long ripe concentrated yellow fruit driven finish with honeysuckle at the end. Really delicious but can age for another decade.

Flight 5 - Red Burgundy (10 notes)

The 19 Drouhin Gevrey Chambertin was exceptional.

Red
2018 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
92 points
Surprisingly dark and opaque color and the nose and palate to match. Expressive nose displaying incredibly concentrated black and red fruit, raspberry liqueur, strawberry jam, licorice, dark spices and earth. Incredible concentration at any level, layers upon layers of intense black and red fruits, rich and dense, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a long intense sweet red and black fruit driven finish with licorice at the end. The most concentrated BB of my life for sure.

Red
2015 Maison Leroy Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
87 points
I seem to like this in 2019 when tasted blind. I did point out strong animal and rough tannins and wasn’t sure how this will develop. It has developed, or may be it was expressed as animal earlier, a medicinal note. Also the tannins remain rough. The fruit is polished and generous but just not that good overall. Definitely one of the least favorites of the flight, if not the least.

Red
2018 Domaine Charles Audoin Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
90 points
Clean medium expressive nose displaying crunch red fruit, cherry, a hint of raspberry, sweet spices and earth. Medium concentration, nicely layered cool red fruit, good balance, bright acidity, medium mineral and a medium long bright red fruit driven finish. This is a very well made BR that is totally ready to go.
Red
2019 Mongeard-Mugneret Bourgogne France, Burgundy, Bourgogne
91 points
Expressive nose displaying rich ripe red fruit, strawberry concentrated, strawberry rhubarb tart, sweet spices and earth. Very good concentration, packed concentrated red fruit, rich and big, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium to long concentrated ripe red fruit driven finish. Really nice showing and drinking well.
Red
2018 Rapet Père et Fils Chorey-les-Beaune Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chorey-les-Beaune
90 points
Medium expressive nose. Mixture of ripe and slightly green fruits. Earthy and a bit masculine.
Red
2019 Joseph Drouhin Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
94 points
Justin served it blind and I really loved it. Absolutely gorgeous nose displaying perfectly ripe black and red fruit, blackberry and raspberry, mocha, rose, sweet spices, tree bark and earth. Very good concentration, very finely layered perfectly ripe black and red fruit, silky and airy, beautiful balance and precision, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long perfectly ripe black and red fruit driven finish. This displays weightless texture or Rousseau. Both nose and palate are exceptional. One of the best Village Gevreys of my life.

Medium concentration, finely layered red fruit, cool and silky, medium acidity, earthy mineral, and a medium long clean red fruit driven earthy finish. Drinking well already.
Red
2019 Claude Dugat Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Excellent concentration, nicely layered concentrated red fruit, rich and fluid, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long ripe red fruit driven finish with a hint of toasted oak at the end. This is the most concentrated red along with the Roumier BB. Really delicious wine.

Flight 6 - Cornas (1 note)

This showed noticeable Brett.

Red
1999 Alain Voge Cornas Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
flawed
Complex classic Cornas nose, tapenade, leather, dark spices and earth. Unfortunately, noticeable Brett. Fully mature but still a hint of tannins.

Flight 7 - SQN sticky (1 note)

White - Sweet/Dessert
2005 Sine Qua Non Chardonnay Mr. K The Noble Man USA, California, Central Coast, Edna Valley
95 points
What you would expect from this wine, apricot, big, thick, rich, bright acidity and etc. Super sweet but mouth puckering acidity prevents it from cloying. Delicious but I can only enjoy for a few sips.
