Tasted August 20, 2022 by rocknroller with 130 views

Introduction

This was the annual summer BBQ hosted by master BBQ chef Siggy. Every year this just gets better and better. Outstanding brisket, great sides from the crew. Theme is BBQ wines with a great mix of Rhone wines. 26 of us attended along with special guests from the Seattle contingent. Thanks to Siggy and Jenny for hosting and everyone for sharing their wine gems and fine cuisine.

Flight 1 (28 notes)

White - Sparkling
2014 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Special Club Grands Terroirs de Chardonnay France, Champagne
93 points
Small glass. I thought this was totally rocking. Really crisp and driven, great mineral definition and citrus fruits. I could have just sat with this for the evening. Loved it!
White - Sparkling
N.V. Sabine Godmé Champagne Premier Cru Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

Small glass. Another winner, never had this one and it did not disappoint. There's nice green orchard fruits, chalk, and good brightness in an even handed style.
White - Sparkling
N.V. Bérêche et Fils Champagne Brut Réserve France, Champagne
92 points
Small glass and quick turn around from a couple weeks ago, though I never tire of this wine. As always stellar and well defined.
White
2016 E. Guigal Condrieu La Doriane France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu
93 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 20 minutes. This was in fine form. Great nose, peach, lightly tropical, lychee, ripe apple, white flowers and a teeny bit of fusil. The palate is medium bodied and crisp with great acid, apple, lychee, citrus, and peach notes, stone, and a little fusil here too with great spice notes and white pepper on the back end. Delicious and right on point now. 93+ to 94pts.

2016 Maison Leroy Bourgogne Blanc France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc

Small pour. Forgot I'd had this a year ago. Looking at my note from then, it hits all those marks again. This punches way above its weight as always. Excellent slate minerality, well defines and classic. Damn this is good.

Small taste. 100% Marsanne. No mistaking this, very solid, lanolin, stone fruits, quince, stone, oily. 90-91pts.
White
2015 Rivetto Langhe Nascetta Borea Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC
91 points
Small glass. From Mag. Never had this before, very pleasantly surprised. This has some weight to it, golden color, a little toasted nuts, silken texture, crisp fruits and excellent mineral definition. 91+ to 92pts.
White - Off-dry
2001 Toni Jost Bacharacher Hahn Riesling Spätlese Germany, Mittelrhein

Tasted. Been 8 years since I last had this. I think there's better definition and balance, still sweet, but everything comes together. ripe golden fruits, good length.

White - Sweet/Dessert
1996 Château Doisy-Daëne France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac
92 points
Small pour. Orange marmalade, apricot, honey cream, apple blossoms, spice, creme brulee, rounded and full, still plenty of acid though. Much better than a bottle a number of years ago.

1999 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Small glass. The consensus was this was pretty tired. I have to agree, it comes off muted and dull with broodiness and muddled cherry fruits and garrigue. Maybe an off bottle, but the trajectory is concerning. NR.

Small glass. Same bottle as Chablis28, I will refer you to him for his detailed note and prep. This definitely benefited from the air and showed better than any of the other Beaucastel's tonight. Excellent and well balanced.

2001 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Small pour x 2. I'm not sure everyone agreed on this wine tonight. I found it quite intriguing at the outset. Lots of garrigue, sanguin blood notes, iron, earthy with wood spice and pepper, cherry, kirsch, and black raspberry. I loved the complexity and mineral density. It seemed flatter later, and they may be the time open or temperature influence.

Small taste. This was kind of a hot mess tonight. One thought it was corked. I didn't get that when I tried it, but it wasn't working regardless and i never went back to check again. NR, corked?

Small glass. I thought this showed pretty well. Much better than a year ago. Still could use more air (had an hour of slow-O), but it is balanced and coming along nicely.

2010 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Tasted. If memory serves, this wasn't showing real well compared to the '09, came off overwrought. Score reserved.

2009 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Small glass. Almost 5 years siince the last bottle. As one would expect this has come a long, long ways. Love the overall style and character, herb de Provence, leather, earthy, a touch of funk - pretty minimal, red fruits, nice spice and even tannins. Yes, this is what I want in CdP.

Small glass. Liked this a lot too, but after the '09, not quite at the same level yet. Perspective is always a thing. This has everything going and it has hit me at a higher level in the past, so no hold barred for the future.

2002 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Turque France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Dark red color. Splash double decanted for 1 hour. Drank a glass over 30 minutes. This is one of those wines that gets overlooked because of vintage generalizations. Well make no mistake, this is still La La at its finest. Sometimes not having the expectations or need for aging can serve you well. That's not say we're at a lesser level by any means either. This is always the kind of wine I want to drink; aged, maturing, showing finesse and character; such pretty red fruits with nuances of black and blue fruit, cured meats, earth and leather, a touch of damp funkiness, leather, minerals and tar. Just gorgeous. 94+ to 95pts.

Ok, well this was good, classic Lopez, maybe nit the absolute rock star you'd expect from '01, but dang good and it was great to drink after a 2010 this week that blew me away. Nice, David, thanks.

2015 Turley Zinfandel Dragon Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, Howell Mountain
90 points
Small pour. So Turley is not usually my thing. That said, I find that the Zin's have a fairly narrow window where I feel they hit that sweet spot and this '14 Dragon was in the window. Never a wallflower, but balanced and showing depth, nice fruit, spice and freshness without going too far. Thanks Brian.

issSmall taste. Love the Lillian wine in general and find them balanced and well done. This just isn't there yet. Give it some time. NR.

2013 Lucien Le Moine Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Vaucrains France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru
Tasted. Had this later in the evening and it apparently didn't hit me the same as others. Solid, but not memorable, oh well, maybe next time.

2014 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Small glass from Mag. Has this after a bevy of CdP's so maybe missed the nuances. .Earthy, spiced, dark red cherry, could use some time.

1995 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
93 points
Drank a glass over 20 minutes. From Mag. Consistent with previous notes, still showing well, firm tannins that can go the distance. The fruit may not be quite as bright as it was, but still excellent. Dark berries, cassis, graphite, leather, tar, spice box, firm tannins.
