Flight 1 - "Whites" (2 notes)

White
2022 Alberto Longo Le Fossette Puglia IGT Italy, Puglia, Puglia IGT
90 points
Flavours of orange flower water and a little green leaf. Quite dense and rich on the palate with moderate acidity. Nice quaffer with some interest

For me this took a bit of time to open and I was desperate for it to do so as I know what a fun wine this can be.
Patience was duly rewarded with lovely notes of salty blood orange, tangerine and wild strawberry. Lovely tanginess (is that a word) on the palate. Walks a nice line as Nick says skews more to being a very light red than a white. I'd like to spend more time with the next bottle.

Flight 2 - Barbaresco (3 notes)

Red
2012 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
90 points
Savoury sapid nose with initially just the right amount of VA and dark cherry and some sweet red currant fruit flavours.
On the palate this is more serious yet still fresh with good weight and nice cherry cola element. Tannins integrated nicely.
This started with a charming rusticity which added interest but seemed to flatten out with time. A solid wine but perhaps worth getting into now if you have some

This has a clear precise nose of roses and cherry syrup. On the palate has good weight and some spice comes in. Has some Barbaresco elegance but not tonnes of interest - not a "meditation" wine but good with food.

2012 Punset Barbaresco Basarin Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
92 points
Best nose of the flight with nice evolved elements of tobacco and menthol (think you can’t buy those any more!) and dried cherry.
Again good weight on the palate with some more tertiary elements.
Despite the evolution in flavour the tannins more present than flight mates.

Flight 3 - Barolo round 1 (3 notes)

Red
2012 Trediberri Barolo Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
I was worried about how this would show given the company in the flight but this acquitted itself as a solid Barolo if not the most interesting.

This has a savoury nose, a little coffee, some medicated dressings (in a good way).
Lovely palate with crunchy red fruit. Again not a "meditation" wine but ticks the boxes for a nice Barolo with food and ok for the price.
Curious to see what this is like in a stronger vintage.

2012 Roagna Barolo Pira Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Interesting nose with some balsamic, game meats, and dried cherry menthol. A little wild but still behaving.
Carries through to the palate with a nice balance of savoury and cherry menthol. Cleans up it's act for a crisp finish.
Red
2012 Elio Grasso Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
92 points
Nicely balanced nose of savoury salami but also sweet red fruit.
A bit more intense than flight mates on the palate but still elegant and fresh. A good right rope walk, not too modernist. Lovely.

Flight 4 - Barolo round 2 (3 notes)

Red
2012 G.D. Vajra Barolo Ravera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
On the nose light lifted tar, furniture polish, and dark plum.
Deep and rich on the palate with dark fruit and coffee.
Tannins still a bit too spiky but a bit more approachable than others in the flight. Some upside here
Red
2012 Elvio Cogno Barolo Ravera Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
90 points
On the nose ripe plum, spices, light tar and dried cherry. Still quite fresh and lifted.
On the palate this isn’t quite ready to go - there are depths there but swamped by tannins very quickly.

2012 M. Marengo Barolo Riserva Brunate Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
91 points
Nose of soft light red fruit with some sweetness and beautiful distinct rose. With time opens up more and gives some nice black tea.
Darkens on the palate with more Brunate intensity. Tannins are pretty full on but there is enough freshness here to have this working with food.
