Absolutely captivating nose displaying elegant white and yellow fruit, apple, pear, starfruit, lemon curd, honey, beeswax, smoke, lightly burnt sugar, brioche and limestone. Perfectly harmonious palate, very finely layers subtle white fruit, elegant, energetic and beautifully detailed. Incredibly fine generous mousse, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long subtle white fruit driven finish with smoke and honey at the end. This is a really clean example, i.e. no lees. 2013 disgorgement. One of the best example of the 96 DP Oeno.

En magnum, the same provenance as the magnum from August and almost identical expression. Fully mature nose displaying sweet yellow fruit, apricot dominates, also cinnamon apple pie, dry peach, crème brulee, honey, lanoline and limestone. Excellent concentration, finely layers generous yellow fruit, generous fine mousse, rich yet nicely detailed, bright acidity, strong limestone mineral and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with cinnamon and caramel at the end. This is a fully mature Cristal, still having very generous mousse. The expression is dominated by tertiary notes. Champagnes are significantly better in magnum. If the energy and freshness is preferred, this may be a bit to advanced, YMMV.

Slightly subdued nose displaying coiled yellow fruit, lemon curd, honey, steel, rainwater and wet stone. Very good concentration, coiled citrus, rich yet precise, bright acidity, steely mineral and a medium to long coiled citrus fruit driven finish with wet stone at the end. The fruit is shy and the overall expression is not too expressive.

En magnum, ideally stored bottle. Expressive beautifully mature yet energetic nose displaying subtle sweet red fruit with a hint of black, raspberry, blackberry, plum, a hint of stem, Vosne spice, sap, roasted nuts, caramel, perfect amount of sous bois and mineral. Perfectly harmonious youthful palate, layers upon layers of very fine red fruit, silky, precise and detailed, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a seamless long subtle sweet red fruit driven finish with caramel and Vosne spice at the end. The resonating Vosne spice and truffle note are both fascinating and hedonistic. Perhaps not as complex, i.e. less Vosne spice and Chinese medicine as La Tache but displaying perfect harmony and drinking perfectly. Absolutely gorgeous.

Medium expressive nose displaying slightly dry black fruit, black cherry, dry cherry, fruitcake, strong animal that I often find in Beaujolais, licorice, balsamico, leather, rare steak, sweet spices and earth. Excellent concentrated, nicely layered ripe black fruit, deeply toned, warm and rich, medium acidy and mineral, noticeable tannins and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with animal and licorice at the end. Although, the ample fruit makes this enjoyable, it will take another two decades to reach the peak. Solid showing.

1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Last Session (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): Youthful yet unbelievably complex nose displaying sweet black and red fruit, blackberry, strawberry, black cherry, a hint of licorice, noticeable stem, sous bois, espresso bean, Vosne spice, Chinese herbal medicine, grilled fat, cinnamon, tree bark and mineral. Perfectly harmonious, very finely layered perfectly ripe black and red fruit, quite intense and concentrated yet also silky, precise and detailed, and a long intense black fruit driven finish with Chinese herbal medicine and sous bois at the end. This seems slightly leaner and more polished than the Richebourg. This incredibly youthful example can improved for another couple of decades.

There is noticeable dirty damp cellar smell that is bothersome. Medium concentration, subtle red fruit, bright acidity, medium mineral, still showing coarse tannins and a short finish due to the dirty damp cellar note. 1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Last Session (Eddie V's - Tysons Corner, VA): The most youthful color of the flight. Absolutely gorgeous nose displaying elegant pure white fruit with a hint of yellow, white peach, apple tart, a hint of lemon curd, lemon oil, white flower, oyster shell, smoke, lanolin, cool breeze and limestone. Perfectly balanced palate, layers upon layers of concentrated pure citrus fruit, rich and extracted yet incredibly precise and airy, bright acidity, strong mineral and a seamless incredibly long very fine mineral driven finish. I am really surprised by how elegant it shows, drinking more like a great Chevalier Montrachet. With two hours of air, it starts to show more caramel and becomes exotic. This is a unbelievably fresh example.

Subdued yellow fruit, slightly oxidized apple, toffee, crème brulee, smoke and sweet spices. A bit hollow mid palate which I often attribute to premox. The finish is a bit bitter. Having had two fresh bottles, this is not correct, i.e. different batch or poor storage at one point.
