Unlucky with this one, too old to drink unfort. Flat dead wine, abs no acidity or cut, gold colour with sweet taste. Marsala wine almost. From professional storage so I think this wine for this vintage is going to be good for cooking :)

Unfort this wine is too old now, Marsala wine almost. Was hoping for it to be still alive, but not the case. And the bottle was in immaculate conditions from professional storage, so very likely this is the end

Lovely flint on the nose. Leroy-esque. Very elegant. Still has some structure and definitely at the darker end of the fruit spectrum for pinot noir. Some licorice and dare I say, marzipan, on the finish. Just delightful. From SJW

Pop and pour. For me I was a little disappointed. A ripe nose upon opening with some dark blackcurrants, but I found the initial nose better than the taste. This is very rustic in style. Quite earthy, but maybe that’s it’s proximity to St Estephel. The palate is round and quite lush, with soft tannins but some bite. I felt this was already very evolved and fading, which is a surprise given this has been perfectly stored since purchasing in Nov 2013.. I have more bottles so let me decant next time.

Crumbly dried out cork, stained 2/3 to top. Minimal ullage. Pop and poured. Centre dark, rim orange but not clear/fading orange, I'd guess 12-15 year wine on colour vs its real 23 years. This has bouquet notes of a woman's perfume I know, vegetal and forest floor-like something subtly decaying. In the mouth actually a really good wine with structure, some VA and fruit/leathery varnish. Would really suit a cheese course. Medium bodied with drying finish. Persistent finish that mirrors the nose. "Old soft bordeaux" like would be apt. Changing as I drink it. Will guarantee this will be one of the least looked at TN on cellartracker. A survivor!

I was really, really impressed with this. Often overlooked verses the bigger names of Raveneau and Dauvissat, but this was equal to, if not better, than many of the recent wines I’ve tried from either. For 13 years, this was incredibly fresh. Quite a reductive nose from the bottle and lots of fresh fruit. Very lively with great acidity and this got better as it warmed up to room temperature, always a sign of a good wine. Am I being harsh with a 95? possibly.

Noticed a few pinches of sediment in the bottle. In the glass, clear with a wide margin of strawberry pink darkening in the center of the glass. Nose initially quite closed with a faint floral fragrance. Initially balances quite far in the acidic / saline direction. After two hours of decanting, this is completely dominated by acid - overwhelming tart, unripe cherries. Was this a bad bottle? Perhaps.

I bought six bottles of the '11 d'Angerville Champans at a Hart Davis Hart auction before I read all of the wine geek complaints on wine talk bulletin boards concerning the 2011 Burgundy vintage re: the Green Meanies. Thank goodness I missed those posts, or I might have passed on these bottles. The 2011 Champans from d'Angerville that I've consumed have been nothing short of stellar. Amazing purity of fruit, red fruit, spice, amazing nose, and just a wonderful fine. Not sure of the disconnect with other red Burgs from '11, but these are outstanding.

This was a bit disappointing as I have had many different bottles from the late releases the Chateau has conducted between 2012-2016 for their 1966-1986 vintages.

The 1966 and 1971 bottles were stunning, but this was maderized, a bit sweet on the nose and palette, and in my view, past it's prime. I certainly would not buy again, especially at this price. (USD 120+)
  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

3/20/22, 5:59 PM - Hello Jake. Every producer is different so it's hard to know what is the 'norm' sometimes.

That said, I did buy some late releases of Montrose a couple of years ago that included a 1981 that looked nearly perfect.

There are two ways a capsule can look like new
    1) they add new labels and capsules at the time of the late release
    2) the bottle still has its original capsule, but brilliant storage conditions have helped keep it pristine

Either way, both should be good outcomes!

I was so excited for this, yet so disappointed. My first bottle for about 5 years, having bought a case back in December 2013. I found this quite sweet, showing a lot of age, and almost tired. Both the oak and vanilla was very prominent without the fruit or structure to support. I really hope this was an off bottle.

*As an update, I just double decanted this, and then consumed over a couple of hours. With hindsight, I think more air would have been beneficial.

I last tried this wine approx a decade ago and tonight was thrilled how well it is showing and lively it remains. Baking spice aromas with forest floor character along with fairly mature black cherry and blackberry. Slightly more advanced on palate, but still a nice combination of earthy elements with black fruit and spice. If served blind, I could easily be convinced this was Vosne Villages.

I was a bit disappointed with this champagne. I found it slightly tart and with too much citrus fruit and bitterness. Lots of lemon and sharp green apples. I think that other grand cuvees have been stronger and the 2011 base didn't quite work as well here. The reserve wines do help, but the base could be the issue. At this stage it was quite unbalanced and perhaps its simply too young? Would be keen to try again. Drank for NYE 2020

1/1/21, 6:23 AM - I think that we all WANT to enjoy this, so we are far more forgiving, but I cannot help but feel if this had another label on the bottle, it wouldn't score anywhere close to what it is receiving today. The '76 Lynch Bages has stood the test of time as has our marriage. Still supple, round and full with light tones of cherry, leather and smoked wood. Certainly less complex than in its youth but isn't that true of any relationship? A marvel for its age...

Is this the greatest Australian wine that I have tasted?

I've had Grange, I've had Hill of Grace, yet its the more unheralded Mount Mary that has always impressed me thebmost from down under.

This was served blind and we were all convinced it was exceptionally high end bordeaux. The nose is perfectly aged and reminded me of many a fine left bank wine from the 80s. Such balance on the palate and a long finish. At 12.5% this is elegant and delicate.

What a wine. I've had the 1994 and the 2015, and I'm convinced they are making some of the best wine in Australia.

Yes, never ease to compare the Syrah wines verses the Bordeaux blends.

In terms of other options, I have tried many of the other producers, and have enjoyed them, but there is just something about Mount Mary that makes me go weak at the knees.

That said, and as my wife often reminds me, I have been known to be wrong on many, many an occasion.

A truly stunning bottle that was from an OWC purchased 10 years ago.

This is quintessential bordeaux, classic blackcurrants interwoven with subtle secondary aromas of leather, wood and oak. Whilst a heavy wine with a dark core, the tannins are beautifully integrated and melt in your mouth. This had perfect balance and really was outstanding. From Ayub

I feel bad scoring so low, but this just didn't do anything for me. As a massive lover of Northern Rhone (esp Cote Rotie, Cornas and Hermitage) I just find this far too overpowering without the elegance to balance it out. Maybe it needs another 10-20 years, as it was still very tight and structured, or maybe it's just not aligned to my palate, but I can't imagine having too much enjoyment from this unless I'm having a massive chargrilled steak or BBQ. Still, great to try a legendary wine. (Shared by BV).
  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

10/28/19, 8:34 AM - Thanks for such a detailed response! It does give a lot of comfort to know that someone else thinks as I do. I had been desperate to try this given the sky high scores from many, but it simply does not appeal to my taste buds. I’d love to try it again in 20 years for educational purposes, but I have a feeling that overripe profile will still be far too prominent for me.

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

11/23/19, 5:49 PM - Congratulations on that bottle purchase and the retirement plans! I do hope (and believe) that in 15 years this will be drinking very well. It certainly has the structure to last and there should be zero concerns it will not last until then (actually, it will probably outlive us all!)

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

11/24/19, 4:12 PM - A lot depends on your taste preferences though. For me, I am a big fan of secondary and tertiary flavours. So I can happily drinks 60s 70s and 80s burgs, rhones and bordeaux all day long. Thats why for me, I would give this another decade, and see this as being a good wine for that 2035 retirement. But if you like wine that's more fruit forward though, others may feel it more ready than I do in a shorter window.

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

11/25/19, 7:45 AM - I love Northern Rhone. Its one of my all time favourite regions. I was lucky enough to try a 1969 Jaboulet and it was outstanding. I've also had a lot of their 80s and 90s wines, all incredible. The challenge is how long to wait. For me, as I say, I love old wines. So truth be told, the 2015 won't be ready until 2045 for me! Haha. But yes, 2015 Northern Rhone is special. But needs time. I drank a Chave Hermitage 2005 tonight. Great wine but still young! If you ever come through Malaysia or London let me know. Will open something for you

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

11/25/19, 11:28 PM - Haha. True. Canadian wine still flies under the radar for most. I come to Quebec once a year and have a small wine collection there. But sadly mostly French, Italian and Australian. So I need to clearly be more adventurous!

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

12/14/19, 6:09 PM - I wouldn't agree. I have had plenty of wines from those regions that are drinking well after 15 years (this isn't a fresh release). My concern here was less the aging requirement, but more that I am just not convinced this has the balance that even in 40 years time my grandchildren would enjoy it. I've had many of the best bordeaux and rhones that are this age, but whilst many of those would surely be better with another decade or two, I found them much more balanced in their youth compared to this. As I say, this is personal preference, but I found the high alcohol, overly ripe, fruit forward style too much for my own tasting palate. Bue who knows, maybe one day I will try it again, that would be fun actually, and I will get proved wrong.

    P. S I just bought some 1982 Beaujolais.... So maybe proposing that I buy that young may also not quite work out either....

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

7/9/20, 7:06 AM - Ultimately, the only judge of what tastes good is the person drinking the wine. And I totally agree, if you are having big BBQs and chargrilled steaks, then a big fruit bomb can work a treat!

There is nothing better than someone serving you a wine blind. I'm fairly confident if I would have seen the label here I would be reeling out the usual statements on how this is green, and hard, and tannic, without fruit. But blind... And wow... What a wine. Classic bordeaux. Still a dark purple/Ruby. Slightly lighter than an 88 Montrose served alongside. Really nicely balanced and great harmony. Served by ST at Cilantro.

Drinking perfectly well now, but should keep another 15-20 years at least.

For me, the wine was sublime, and at 30+ years the tannins have melted and its a smooth drinking experience. As each year goes by, the fruit becomes mellower and mellower, with more secondary and tertiary notes appearing. I guess a lot depends on how you like your wine. Not quite sure what happened but was moving some bottle in the wine cabinet around when I noticed a tiny drop of wine on this previously coravin'ed bottle. I was afraid it somehow had not resealed properly so opened the rest of the bottle. Luckily it was fine so I am confused about where the drop came from. I guess it's possible it never dried out after the original pour but I'm still in my coravin experimental stage since I don't fully trust it yet. In any case wine showed some more acidity and a nice pomegranate flavor this time for some added punch. Conversely nose was a bit closed this time. I'll still hold my rating at 90 as a solid RR appellation pinot.

The really evolved well. Give this an hour of air and it become a lovely champagne. Classic Bollinger oxidised notes makes you know immediately you are drinking a vintage wine that could pass for 25-30 years old. Big and heavy, but loads of complexity, especially honey and worked wonderfully well with aged gouda. I really enjoyed this, and preferred it to the 1990 and 1997 Grand Annee.

I am speechless. I had this marked as 80s bordeaux when served blind. It is slightly hazy and a garnet to twany colour. Lots of meat and barnyard, with a medium to full body and medium to high intensity. This was layered and complex but exceptionally balanced. This was my first 61, and I can see what the fuss is about given how harmonious this wine was. Just exceptional. Served blind by ST at Kingyu.

7/23/19, 2:27 AM - Like you, those of us around the table were absolutely blown away when it was revealed (given served blind). It was drunk alongside a Montrose 75 and many of us have had the fortune to drink many 1-5th growths, and all felt this was showing like a 70/80s bottle. My friend who brought this has stored it exceptionally well, which helps, but he said this bottle was performing far better than some of the others from the case.

Pleasantly integrated and mild. Same reductive peppermint as in '85 magnum we had alongside, but on a lower level. Spicy, more complex and more edgy. Very good.

A further step up from the Palmer 1989. Just sublime. Lush. Full. Still structured. And totally alive. Very much still fruity and only just turning secondary. Has decades left, but in its prime drinking window. Just a wonderful wine.

I have only had a handful of 2008s, but I am already starting to think that this will go down as one of the best champagne vintages of all time. Whilst I sadly have no formal notes, this was full, lush, utterly elegant and perfectly balanced. This is already drinking so well, but will clearly last decades. Perfect acidity will make this approachable both now, and in the future.

The best young champagne (under 15 years) I have ever tried.

And to be clear, if I try this again, and it shows as well, and this ages as I think it can, this could easily be a 100 point champagne for me. It could be perfect.

2/5/19, 4:06 AM - Hi Dave. In 2008, both the DP and the Cristal are utterly superb. So great choices. From what I understand, Cristal is generally the better shower when young, however the DP probably ages better in the long run.

Broadly speaking, I purchase far more DP than Cristal as I just find it a much better price point and better ager. I have the 2003, 2008 and 2009 also, so good choices! I had a 1999 DP just a few weeks ago that was stunning for example. Truth be told, your guests should be very pleased with either!

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

2/5/19, 5:02 PM - Congratulations on the wonderful landmark! The best thing about the 2008 vintage is that it is already so approachable. The cristal for example was absolutely singing and ready for action. Whilst the DP could age longer, it will also still be nice now, just simply a little more primary.

What I always like about champagne, verses bordeaux for example, is that they are released with a lot of aging. Those 2008s are already 11 years old! Compare this to bordeaux that is released after just a few years. It also benefits from no tannins.

So my advice is just to drink and enjoy whenever you desire sir. My biggest wine regret is that I bought a bottle of 1968 for one of my best friends (who was born that year) and we never got to actually drink it because I was waiting for that 'perfect' moment which sadly never came as he passed away at the end of last year. Now I have an amazing wine just sat there.... How I wish I would have drank it earlier. Enjoy!

  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

2/6/19, 6:01 AM - Sorry to hear of your loss also. And a shame that we both share the same story of a lonely bottle.

I'm actually preparing to drink the wine sometime in the next few months. I have another friend I was looking to drink it with that was also born in 1968, so the plan was for us to drink it all together to celebrate their 50 year landmark birthdays. The intention now is that we drink it, and share great memories of him whilst we consume it.

Funnily enough, I don't necessarily see it as a part of me is now gone, and perhaps we can view it a little differently. I'm a bit of a pain-in-the-backside for being a positive person, but I actually see it that after he died, a little part of him now continues in me. So I'm still the same person, but made a little better because he taught me so much that I will take forward in life (his name was Amreek Singh).

Regarding your lack of champagne knowledge, that's no issue, we are all learning. I have always focussed on reds from bordeaux, rhone and burgundy, so my knowledge of still whites is pretty basic. I am just lucky that my wife likes champagne so we have been drinking quite a bit over the years. We love DP, but I am also really enjoying some vintage champagnes at age 20 from 'mid range' selections. The Moet Grand Vintage collection is superb and around 60 usd. Tomorrow night I will drink a 2008 Pol Roger Rose, and I have a 2008 Tattinger sitting by to try later in the year. All great champagnes at nice price points.

Finally, on the small chance you ever pop through Montreal or Kuala Lumpur. Let me know. We can share a bottle and share fond memories of our lost friends.

    Until then.... Happy drinking

Wonderful, fully mature Margaux, probably in its peak drinking window. Brick red in color with a generous nose of black and blue fruit. Tastes of cherries, blackberries, leather, orange peel, and oak. It’s medium bodied, balanced, and complex. It’s very enjoyable with a moderate finish. Excellent.

This BDM is the classic sour cherry meets some tar and leaves a puckering tannic impression. Medium-bodied and the classic BDM. Acids are high and though it may seem like my TN is negative this wine will come around in 10 years. A previous taster mentioned "resolved" tannins. No way. Be patient - scores just can't be in the 80's for this wine. I'm sorry but when the classic profile is met and the structure is obvious the scores must be in the low 90's...
  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

7/20/18, 8:52 AM - I have been drinking a huge number of these wines from the 70s and 80s over the past 12 months. This shows just how well these wines age, and I am certain that the wine being made in the past decade is even better than past vintages as technology improves.

For the 2012 vintage, if you only have 2 bottles, then I would not be drinking before 2022, but for me, the 1986 is in a great spot now, which translates to 2042 for this one! But I presume you may want to try sooner.

    For me, drink 2022-2050+

7/20/18, 6:02 PM - Wow. I would be loading up at that price, especially if you have the space. Can't think of too many better value for money buys. I bought mine for 30 euros and still think that's OK.

Assuming space is no issue, and there is a good supply, I would consider opening one now to try and see how it fits with your taste preference. For 20 euros you get a quick sense of whether it's something that could appeal and without huge cash outflows.

    Happy drinking!

flawed
I was served this recently by a friend. As most Ducrus are/were from 88, it was flawed. They put a chemical product on the ceiling of the cellar which affected the taste of most of the barrels, rendering the wine undrinkable. I’m writing this partly because I have just seen the wine on sale at auction for a staggering 90€. As far as I know the chances of a good bottle are around 10% (my whole case was flawed). You have been warned.

P.S. 89 was also affected along with 90 (91, 92, 93 and 94). I have since discovered that a library release was made, with contre-étiquettes stating that the bottle was tested and recorked. If the bottle has this at auction, fine, if not, keep well away.
  • _water.into.wine_ commented:

7/6/18, 3:34 AM - Yes, sadly they had a bad issue with TCA in the late 80s

In fairness to the team, they went through their entire cellar in 2011 and tested every wine they had from this period. If it was bad, they threw it out, and if good, they recorded and rebottled it. I have had many of these late releases and they are wonderful.

The easy way to tell is by looking on the back of the bottle, as they clearly state recorked in 2011. They also use the thicker modern day bottle as well.

That said, the 2002 you gave 15 years, whilst this only had 8. I do believe this could be a cracking wine in another 7 years (2025+ period)

Unfortunately my bottle had gone beyond high acidity and was strongly vinegared. Tasted like a complex, thinned aged balsamico. Nose was still barely there and color was bricking but fine for the age - but a flawed bottle. Cork was in good shape. Can't figure out what all these previous notes about "drink soon" and "over the peak" are all about. A gorgeous wine! Half hour decant, good condition (cork only partially saturated and good ullage levels)

Browned rim, deep purple core. Legs. Very distinct nose of marzipan, sweet leather and mushrooms. No "barnyard" notes, smelt lovely.

Palette has fantastic acidity, really impressive given its age, red currents earth and dark cherries. Good finish, smooth as butter. A very classic and engaging wine, good for another 5 years I would say. A nice introduction to 82.
