12/4/23, 7:41 AM - Did you buy from lay and wheeler?
11/26/23, 7:42 AM - Hello - was this from L&W in the uk ? Do you think it premox ?
11/9/23, 8:22 PM - You are correct ! I am not sure what happened ! Thanks for highlighting (I have now corrected)
7/28/23, 1:04 PM - Thank you for sharing you insight ! I have some 1970s in stock also, so time to test your theory ! Haha
6/4/23, 3:59 AM - Hello - any reason you marked as flawed?
5/5/23, 7:32 PM - I read this!
4/18/23, 6:51 PM - Hahahaha - I agree - maybe 95 is too harsh !
2/7/23, 6:05 AM - She is very much in the natural wine camp - sounds like a volatile wine?
6/26/22, 6:43 AM - Oh. Very nice! I am really hoping that post covid, we can get more wine makers visiting Malaysia again
3/24/22, 7:35 AM - I adore 2007 and 2011. Sure, they are not as ripe as other years, but for me, that is a MAJOR plus point. I love the red fruits and high acidity.
3/20/22, 5:59 PM - Hello Jake. Every producer is different so it's hard to know what is the 'norm' sometimes. That said, I did buy some late releases of Montrose a couple of years ago that included a 1981 that looked nearly perfect. There are two ways a capsule can look like new1) they add new labels and capsules at the time of the late release2) the bottle still has its original capsule, but brilliant storage conditions have helped keep it pristineEither way, both should be good outcomes!
3/23/22, 8:06 AM - Good luck with the bottle! Please keep me posted how it was. Enjoy
9/12/21, 10:41 PM - Hi Dave. I agree, I think a longer decant would have been beneficial. I had a 1991 recently and was drinking well. I also have a 1973 that I am keen to try. Fingers crossed
9/12/21, 7:28 AM - Very similar experience. I hope this gets better with age. But I'm not hopeful
9/12/21, 7:27 AM - Totally agree! Opened a bottle tonight and it was just so underwhelming!
8/14/21, 9:38 PM - I did not. That said, I am someone that broadly enjoys leaner wines, so my palate may be a little different to others. But I struggle to see how others cannot enjoy this. Its top drawer
7/13/21, 5:09 AM - Hello. When you say you get what you pay for. Do you mean this is delivering or not delivering? Thanks!
6/26/21, 9:00 AM - 89 points seems quite harsh given how positive your review is though?
6/18/21, 7:29 AM - I have one more bottle. Will try again!
1/1/21, 6:23 AM - I think that we all WANT to enjoy this, so we are far more forgiving, but I cannot help but feel if this had another label on the bottle, it wouldn't score anywhere close to what it is receiving today. I actually had a Pierre Peters Chetillions 2010 today, and that was head and shoulders above this. Let's hope time is good to the Krug 167eme
1/9/21, 12:37 AM - Hello. If its one bottle and you are keen to try, then by all means pop the cork. I think your suggestion of giving it a little bit of air is a good idea also. But as I always caveat, everyone's tastes are different, so don't let me be the sole judge. Maybe what I find too Tart you find perfect!
5/24/21, 2:20 AM - The 168eme is wonderful. You will certainly enjoy that bottle and I also think it will age very well. Its probably the best since the 164eme
5/30/21, 7:53 PM - I had a 1947 and a 1952 Krug during the past year - if you store well and like aged champagne, these will keep for decades! There is absolutely no issue whatsoever keeping a 168eme until Christmas. And in fact, you could argue it would taste better by then. Still fresh, but with lots of complexity. Enjoy the bottle! And keep me posted
5/31/21, 3:42 AM - Totally fine. 10c is actually very cold. Even 16-18c will be fine for a short period. Enjoy
1/30/21, 3:16 AM - No, sadly not. I inputted a placeholder so I could type up my notes at a later point in time (I have close to 1,000 pending) so often I make a date placement and then come back to add the details a few months (sometimes years) later. This time, my system failed...
12/23/20, 7:03 AM - Totally agree! I think something went haywire here
9/11/20, 11:28 PM - Congratulations on the marriage, and the wine!
9/11/20, 7:06 PM - That's useful insight! Two of us in the room were convinced it was NZ Syrah!
8/25/20, 7:54 PM - Totally agree! I had it this week, superb wine!
8/18/20, 11:54 PM - Hi ChattersYes, never ease to compare the Syrah wines verses the Bordeaux blends. In terms of other options, I have tried many of the other producers, and have enjoyed them, but there is just something about Mount Mary that makes me go weak at the knees. That said, and as my wife often reminds me, I have been known to be wrong on many, many an occasion.I am also the guy that thinks Ducru Beaucaillou and Leoville Las Cases makes the best wine in Bordeaux... So I'm pretty loose with my preferences! Haha
7/29/20, 4:05 PM - Enjoy that wine!
10/28/19, 8:34 AM - Thanks for such a detailed response! It does give a lot of comfort to know that someone else thinks as I do. I had been desperate to try this given the sky high scores from many, but it simply does not appeal to my taste buds. I’d love to try it again in 20 years for educational purposes, but I have a feeling that overripe profile will still be far too prominent for me.
11/23/19, 5:49 PM - Congratulations on that bottle purchase and the retirement plans! I do hope (and believe) that in 15 years this will be drinking very well. It certainly has the structure to last and there should be zero concerns it will not last until then (actually, it will probably outlive us all!)
11/24/19, 4:12 PM - A lot depends on your taste preferences though. For me, I am a big fan of secondary and tertiary flavours. So I can happily drinks 60s 70s and 80s burgs, rhones and bordeaux all day long. Thats why for me, I would give this another decade, and see this as being a good wine for that 2035 retirement. But if you like wine that's more fruit forward though, others may feel it more ready than I do in a shorter window.
11/25/19, 7:45 AM - I love Northern Rhone. Its one of my all time favourite regions. I was lucky enough to try a 1969 Jaboulet and it was outstanding. I've also had a lot of their 80s and 90s wines, all incredible. The challenge is how long to wait. For me, as I say, I love old wines. So truth be told, the 2015 won't be ready until 2045 for me! Haha. But yes, 2015 Northern Rhone is special. But needs time. I drank a Chave Hermitage 2005 tonight. Great wine but still young! If you ever come through Malaysia or London let me know. Will open something for you
11/25/19, 11:28 PM - Haha. True. Canadian wine still flies under the radar for most. I come to Quebec once a year and have a small wine collection there. But sadly mostly French, Italian and Australian. So I need to clearly be more adventurous!
12/14/19, 6:09 PM - I wouldn't agree. I have had plenty of wines from those regions that are drinking well after 15 years (this isn't a fresh release). My concern here was less the aging requirement, but more that I am just not convinced this has the balance that even in 40 years time my grandchildren would enjoy it. I've had many of the best bordeaux and rhones that are this age, but whilst many of those would surely be better with another decade or two, I found them much more balanced in their youth compared to this. As I say, this is personal preference, but I found the high alcohol, overly ripe, fruit forward style too much for my own tasting palate. Bue who knows, maybe one day I will try it again, that would be fun actually, and I will get proved wrong.P. S I just bought some 1982 Beaujolais.... So maybe proposing that I buy that young may also not quite work out either....
7/9/20, 7:06 AM - Ultimately, the only judge of what tastes good is the person drinking the wine. And I totally agree, if you are having big BBQs and chargrilled steaks, then a big fruit bomb can work a treat!
6/30/20, 1:00 AM - Haha. Glad you enjoyed my grandchildren free tasting note
3/30/20, 5:09 AM - I think your bottle may have been corked sadly. There is a lot of fruit intensity on both the nose and palate
8/11/19, 9:44 PM - If you have two bottles, I would be considering opening one now. And then you can save the other for another 'right moment'For me, the wine was sublime, and at 30+ years the tannins have melted and its a smooth drinking experience. As each year goes by, the fruit becomes mellower and mellower, with more secondary and tertiary notes appearing. I guess a lot depends on how you like your wine. If you like fruit, then clearly drink up. If you like a mouthful of leather, barnyard and smoke, then this will outlive us all!
3/3/20, 6:38 AM - Let me know how it was?! If you need help consuming... always happy to assist... :)
2/18/20, 5:02 PM - Haha. I guess this is the pleasure of wine, that we can all enjoy it in different ways. Lemon notes were actually the most noticeable element for me, and it seems 4/5 other tasters from the past few months. But bottles vary, temperatures vary, people vary, so who knows.... But just read your note... Black forest gateaux?!?!?! Hahaha
12/29/19, 7:24 AM - Totally agree. Just had this. It was so green and herbaceous
12/26/19, 10:04 PM - Great to hear! Please post your comments and let me know how you find it. I adored it and I hope you will too
11/30/19, 2:12 AM - I love Belle Epoque. And have had some absolutely stunning 1985 and 1988 bottles in the last few months. I hope this will come around. Just needs time. It's crazy to think that Dom Perignon is only just releasing its 2008 wines, yet this 2012 is out by Perrier Jouet
11/30/19, 2:10 AM - Just amended. Thanks! It was 2007 that I was drinking this alongside
9/23/19, 5:30 AM - The longest I have left a bottle is 2 years from start to finish. This was a 1988 Cos D’Estournel and I drank 4 glasses, returning every 6 months, as I wanted to test the coravin. It passed!
8/4/19, 8:59 PM - Hello. I found the 2004 to be a step up in class and with a bit more balance. The 2005 may settle with time though, but the 2004 is in a nice spot
7/23/19, 2:27 AM - Like you, those of us around the table were absolutely blown away when it was revealed (given served blind). It was drunk alongside a Montrose 75 and many of us have had the fortune to drink many 1-5th growths, and all felt this was showing like a 70/80s bottle. My friend who brought this has stored it exceptionally well, which helps, but he said this bottle was performing far better than some of the others from the case.
7/14/19, 8:15 PM - HelloQuick one. It says disgorged 2015, but the note is from 2014?
5/11/19, 6:08 PM - Thank you. I meant to say Palmer 89. I have amended it. This is the downside of making the notes after drinking a few bottles....
2/5/19, 4:06 AM - Hi Dave. In 2008, both the DP and the Cristal are utterly superb. So great choices. From what I understand, Cristal is generally the better shower when young, however the DP probably ages better in the long run. Broadly speaking, I purchase far more DP than Cristal as I just find it a much better price point and better ager. I have the 2003, 2008 and 2009 also, so good choices! I had a 1999 DP just a few weeks ago that was stunning for example. Truth be told, your guests should be very pleased with either!
2/5/19, 5:02 PM - Congratulations on the wonderful landmark! The best thing about the 2008 vintage is that it is already so approachable. The cristal for example was absolutely singing and ready for action. Whilst the DP could age longer, it will also still be nice now, just simply a little more primary. What I always like about champagne, verses bordeaux for example, is that they are released with a lot of aging. Those 2008s are already 11 years old! Compare this to bordeaux that is released after just a few years. It also benefits from no tannins. So my advice is just to drink and enjoy whenever you desire sir. My biggest wine regret is that I bought a bottle of 1968 for one of my best friends (who was born that year) and we never got to actually drink it because I was waiting for that 'perfect' moment which sadly never came as he passed away at the end of last year. Now I have an amazing wine just sat there.... How I wish I would have drank it earlier. Enjoy!
2/6/19, 6:01 AM - Sorry to hear of your loss also. And a shame that we both share the same story of a lonely bottle. I'm actually preparing to drink the wine sometime in the next few months. I have another friend I was looking to drink it with that was also born in 1968, so the plan was for us to drink it all together to celebrate their 50 year landmark birthdays. The intention now is that we drink it, and share great memories of him whilst we consume it.Funnily enough, I don't necessarily see it as a part of me is now gone, and perhaps we can view it a little differently. I'm a bit of a pain-in-the-backside for being a positive person, but I actually see it that after he died, a little part of him now continues in me. So I'm still the same person, but made a little better because he taught me so much that I will take forward in life (his name was Amreek Singh).Regarding your lack of champagne knowledge, that's no issue, we are all learning. I have always focussed on reds from bordeaux, rhone and burgundy, so my knowledge of still whites is pretty basic. I am just lucky that my wife likes champagne so we have been drinking quite a bit over the years. We love DP, but I am also really enjoying some vintage champagnes at age 20 from 'mid range' selections. The Moet Grand Vintage collection is superb and around 60 usd. Tomorrow night I will drink a 2008 Pol Roger Rose, and I have a 2008 Tattinger sitting by to try later in the year. All great champagnes at nice price points. Finally, on the small chance you ever pop through Montreal or Kuala Lumpur. Let me know. We can share a bottle and share fond memories of our lost friends. Until then.... Happy drinking
10/30/18, 5:42 AM - Did you mean to score 80?
7/30/18, 8:07 AM - It’s a wonderful wine isn’t it?! It totally blew me and my (relatively low) expectations away.
7/20/18, 8:52 AM - I have been drinking a huge number of these wines from the 70s and 80s over the past 12 months. This shows just how well these wines age, and I am certain that the wine being made in the past decade is even better than past vintages as technology improves. For the 2012 vintage, if you only have 2 bottles, then I would not be drinking before 2022, but for me, the 1986 is in a great spot now, which translates to 2042 for this one! But I presume you may want to try sooner. For me, drink 2022-2050+
7/20/18, 6:02 PM - Wow. I would be loading up at that price, especially if you have the space. Can't think of too many better value for money buys. I bought mine for 30 euros and still think that's OK. Assuming space is no issue, and there is a good supply, I would consider opening one now to try and see how it fits with your taste preference. For 20 euros you get a quick sense of whether it's something that could appeal and without huge cash outflows.Happy drinking!
7/6/18, 3:34 AM - Yes, sadly they had a bad issue with TCA in the late 80sIn fairness to the team, they went through their entire cellar in 2011 and tested every wine they had from this period. If it was bad, they threw it out, and if good, they recorded and rebottled it. I have had many of these late releases and they are wonderful. The easy way to tell is by looking on the back of the bottle, as they clearly state recorked in 2011. They also use the thicker modern day bottle as well.
6/27/18, 6:11 PM - Hello. How long did you air or decant? I didn’t like this from the bottle, but after 7 hours of air it was lovely! I suspect shut down. Try again post 2020,or even 2022
6/27/18, 9:12 PM - Do you have a case or was this your last bottle?
6/27/18, 10:42 PM - Unfortunately I find it quite overpriced for what it is. I personally feel you can get some better values from the likes of Boillot family etc, as for the same as an off vintage of PdO, you can get a 2005,09,10 etc from themThat said, the 2002 you gave 15 years, whilst this only had 8. I do believe this could be a cracking wine in another 7 years (2025+ period)
6/28/18, 3:58 AM - Enjoy! P. S just saw you are KL based. I recently moved there. Small world!
2/17/18, 6:15 AM - I love that you liked this wine. I think it is an absolute classic and hugely underestimated!
1/28/18, 5:11 AM - I drank this nearly 10 years after your note... You were correct! It's great now!
1/3/18, 11:54 PM - Hello. Did you ever have your second bottle?
1/20/18, 3:17 AM - Thank you! And great timing. A very happy 50th to your wife! Your notes are really useful. Thank you again.
1/17/18, 6:45 AM - I totally agree. Great wine!
Thanks for letting us know about this problem. We will review your comments and be in touch soon with an update.
