Mostly clear with a light green tinge. Strongly mineral nose with lemon and lime zest. This wine manages to have a light body with a heavy presence. Notes of lemon, lime, pomelo, quince, gooseberry, with a lingering mixed citrus finish. Absolutely delicious.

This was tasted side by side with the 2017. Unfortunately, it shows a shitton of richness, but not much acidity to back it up, making the wine appear flabby and uninteresting. Too much heat on the aftertaste with the sweetness of Merlot really coming into focus. Not something I'd like to come back to.

I bought a case of the '00 Leoville Las Cases many years ago and put it away in my cellar. The first two bottles I tried were completely closed up to the point where I was getting absolutely nothing from them. Last night, I decided on a whim to see if there had been any evolution and I am happy to report that there has indeed been some progress and that the wine is starting to come along. I'll open the next bottle in a few years but I'm beginning to think this wine will be a complete knockout in about a decade. If you own some, I would recommend being patient.

Decanted 30 mins then drank over 2 hrs. At its best at 45 mins post decant but both palate and nose dissipates significantly at the end … perhaps signifying it is at its peak

My seventh bottle, it's been over a year since the previous one. I drink one each year because I have a lot of this in my cellar and want to see how it evolves, but for those with only a few bottles my recommendations continue unchanged: drink 2025 to 2035; decant 3 hours ahead; and if you serve it at cool room temperature the alcohol will remain in check. I got my stock from several sources and at several different times, but for my previous notes I didn't record the lot number. I'll pay attention to that more in the future. This one (L.01.16) seems to me to be a bit different than the previous bottles, showing very high acid levels that presage a long life. As I have mentioned before, this wine is evolving away from its Pinot Noir-ish youth towards a decidedly Nebbiolo-ish middle age, and is reminiscent of a very good Nebbiolo from Alto Piemonte. It needs at least a three hour decant to show its stuff, and was better on night two. It has a transparent ruby color, muted aromas of raspberries, cranberries and pomegranates and very big flavors of cherry, beetroot, and plums. It has lip-smacking acidity, medium+ body, a very big acid and tannin structure, a hint of mid-palate sweetness and a big, savory, very mineral finish. Excellent QPR.

12/6/21, 3:48 PM - Thanks for the decanting 3+ hr tip .. the fruit came up and tannins softened nicely

What gives this wine such a high score on here I'll never know. This is a great example of supermarket level Chardonnay where the quality isn't really in focus, but rather the brand and hype. Pale lemon green in the glass. Nice aromatics of citrus fruit, oak, some biscuity aromas of lees aging. The palate is quite thin, I'd almost say watery, where the oak acts as a clumsy counterpart to the fruit. Acidity is crisp, but disjointed from the alcohol and hollow fruit concentration. Medium finish. No potential on this, just drink now, forget about it quick and go find a better Chardonnay for the price. I beg you.

I seem to recall past vintages being a bit heavier. This '19 was wonderfully light and charming. A solid rose.

Owned by the company. Single vineyard. Treasury owns most.of the region apparently. Picked youthful to retain acidity. Apparently the Woodbury vineyard. 20 minutes south of the barossa.

Limey and stone and easily recognizable.

Penfolds history- 175 years old this year. The dr. With the name.stopped in the south of france.for vine cuttings and planted them in adelaide. trying to achieve penfolds as a global brand.

The wines were originally fortified. It wasn't until 1945 that that changed. The man who's did that max, served in france.in world war two and saw dey wines there.
  • smenzies commented:

2/4/21, 9:23 PM - Penfolds started the Bin 51 in the 90s when it really was a red wine maker and wanted to extend its portfolio...so it stayed in the Barossa (ie. Eden V) with the Bin 51. However, even considering the Yattarna which imo is just too expensive to be competitive, it remains a quintessential Oz red maker...and has left the whites to others with more commitment.

Decanted & aired for two hours prior to enjoying. Nose of earth & flowers initially, these aromas faded over time with air. Flavors of cassis, tobacco & dark chocolate with drying tannins and a medium/long finish.
  • smenzies commented:

2/4/21, 9:01 PM - In retrospect would you decant for just 1 hr before drinking because of the decline in the nose over time?

Largely per last tasting, perhaps not quite so musty, but still seemingly suppressed on the palate. I’m still inclined to suspect storage rather than the wine itself, but it still trembles at the edge of overripenes. Not really in the correct condition I believe.

1/20/21, 12:14 AM - I understand your comments.. but see my recent tasting .. this needs, surprisingly, a long decant

"I like it" doesn't really even cut it. I love this wine. So much elegance, so much complexity, incredible lightness and fragrance. Rose petals, cherry, light smoke and char, fresh blackberries. Really opens up on the midpalate and a ridiculous finish. Very Pinot Noir-ish.I think someone on CT said this but it is true. Can easily rival and beat half of Burgundy PCsand all California "high end Pinots" but at half to 1/5the the price. What are you waiting for? Buy it ironically. Buy it sincerely. Just buy it. Not buying it is an act of buying it... im done now.

Blind at a BYOB.

Warm nose with plenty of ripe, succulent berries, vanilla, coffe, cola-beans and hints of iron. On the palate again lots of juicy, ripe fruit but not enough energy and drive, and towards the end almost cloyingly sweet vanilla. Not a bad wine, but not for me. Too heavy, clumsy and sweet. Others liked it a lot more.
