Drinking exceptionally well.

3/6/21, 8:16 AM - Yes - really in a sweet spot. I found it surprisingly concentrated too and great over a couple of days

2005 Château Léoville Barton St. Julien Red Bordeaux Blend
Nice but not great. Would never guess this was 15 years old. Still very primary, dark fruits and little (or hidden) complexity. Still plenty of tannin but soft and fine. 5 more years ?

6/22/20, 2:29 PM - Thank you. I agree. Disappointing showing last week - and I worry that the fruit won’t last past the tannin. Just seems out of balance, and lacking in pleasure for now. Needs plenty more time...

Red
2013 Cantina del Pino Barbaresco Ovello Nebbiolo
WS rated this a top 100 wine????, average review is 92pts, certainly not the bottle I'm drinking. I know it might be too young but based on tasting over the last two days I'm getting nothing that would get me to buy this wine at any price. Thin, average at best. 85pts.
Finally on the third day this wine showed some balance and depth. 2020 seems like a good time to start drinking.

3/7/19, 12:26 AM - I loved this ep but found it hard and unyielding a few months ago from bottle. Hope time will help

Fabulous wine. Way tastier then I was expecting. Smooth and elegant. Aromas of tropical exotic fruits, lemon curd, limes, flintiness and some ginger. The flavours follow the aromas and add in some salinity. Juicy acidity. Beautiful and tasty ... there is a lushness and creaminess to the wine without the weight these elements can bring. Fresh feeling, light on the palate but gives plenty of complexity. One of the best white burgs I have had in a long time.

9/20/17, 8:31 AM - Great note. Completely agree. And the Saline note on the finish gives such freshness. Andrew and Emma are producing fabulous wine across their range.

PnP. Blackberry, woodsmoke, after 30 mins or so some surprising honey - almost like a rich old sweet wine - mahogany. Palate becomes richer and more concentrated with time, still mainly blackberry fruit, bramble, herbal notes, fine tannins. Some tartness from the vintage. Smooth but fresh. Long. As with the nose plenty of evidence of the oak. Even though this is young, and the parts need longer to come together, there is already so much pleasure in this wine, especially after an hour+ of air, I can't stop drinking it! For those of us who are drinkers and not investors, this is why Maxime - and many of the other young Burgundy Winemakers who are less known - are so exciting. While styles are different - some are min sulphur, some not, some (carefully chosen) new oak, some not, some whole bunch / stems, some not etc - all of them aim to produce wines that people will love drinking. Wines that will give pleasure throughout their drinking windows whatever the vintage has given them. Wines that make you smile. Rant over. Fabulous wine. Enjoyed throughout but needed the hour+ for both nose and palate to really start showing well.

8/11/17, 4:48 AM - Thanks. Yes, I have been doing the same for the last couple of years - not the top end but village and bottles of the 1er Crus. It looks like the 1ers especially will be out of reach now given what is happening to prices. In case of interest, the other young Winemakers I am enjoying - although some v different to Maxime - include Etienne Julian, Mark Haisma, Andrew Nielsen of Le Grappin, Amélie Berthaut, and Aurelian Verdet. Great value and real pleasure in all of them.

Richer than I remember from a few years ago. Great nose: truffle, violets and earthy notes alongside sweet plum fruit. More Pomerol than Margaux. On opening, slightly out of balance on the palate - rich, black plum, overshadowed a little by some firm tannin which eases over an hour or so. Rich, powerful wine with hedonistic nose. Drinking from now and, for those that enjoy younger wines, showing well.

5/14/16, 1:08 AM - Thanks. My bottles were bought retail in 2008 and until last year were in a natural cellar with pretty high summer temps so may be more advanced than if stored at ideal temp. Was a very nice drink indeed after an hour or so!

Entering secondary phase but still with a long way to go. After an hours air in glass, strong vanilla and hint of tobacco on the nose; some sweet red fruit - v different from dark fruit of earlier bottles. More traditional. Less modern. Silky and smooth in the mouth. Some slight bitterness - no rush. Caramel. Spicy. But a sweet oak and strawberry / raspberry touch too. Finishes long. Good concentration. Lovely complexity if not quite yet integrated. V good.

3/4/15, 1:12 PM - Popped and poured but left for an hour in glass before tasting. Lots of caramel on the finish but has become more Bordeaux-like over the evening. Slightly more of an vegetal element too. Lots of complex parts so worth a pop but I suspect will integrate more in a few more years. Was unfortunately my last bottle!

3 hours air which it needed. At least a few years away from peak. Enjoyed far more than d'Issan 2005 last night. No farmyard stink, firm, less fleshy, more serious wine: cassis, cedar, violet on the nose. More concentrated on the palate, esp. mid, than I remember from last year - cassis, cedar, spice and a hint of mint freshness alongside some vanilla from oak. Savoury. I guess just a question of personal preference and palate but across vintages this remains great value for me, and seriously underrated by critics. 92+
  • alion commented:

12/14/14, 4:50 AM - Many thanks. From my reading of the critics they argue the wine is too simple; and lacks the complexity they would expect from a "third growth". I obviously disagree - but would also stress balance and drinkability which was why the wine was so lovely last night once it had some air. We were through it in just over an hour! The d'Issan 2005 the night before although had less air was far less serious or complex to my taste.

2 hours air. Lots of pencil lead and cedar. Dark plum nose suggests richness. But much fresher on the palate. After 3+ hours, nose becomes more exotic - red fruit, violet, cedar. Much more interesting than last year. With air, drinking well but could leave a few years. 92+

2/14/14, 3:32 AM - Not a full decant. Decanted for 2 hours to glass [a proper bordeaux glass which I didn't have last summer when last tried this vintage], and then 2nd glass from bottle an hour later drunk again over another hour. Having the rest of the bottle tonight. I really enjoyed it - shows the vintage but especially in the second glass loved the nose, fuller body but still with a freshness and austere side which really works for me.

Exceptional. Rich but not cloying. Balanced. Tropical fruit, citrus. But it is the finish which really makes the wine stand out. Best bottle so far.
  • alion commented:

7/7/13, 12:20 AM - For my palate probably yes - but in general I like my wines younger than most. My cellar is natural too - so has a higher range than optimal [up to 19 degrees on very hot days]. We drank with a natural Stilton blue cheese which - surprisingly for me - worked really well. Hope that helps
