Cool fennel with red and dark fruit, great perfume even at this young age. There's some subtle rose in there, too. Nice concentrated fruit on the palate. Decent amount of pleasure to be had drinking this right now. Ovello is, in my opinion, one of Produttori's single vineyard standouts.

Early on this showed fairly tough, with medicinal herbs, earth, and a bit of unripe blackberry fruit. By the 2nd day it was shining with red plums and black cherry, menthol, a touch of smoke. Surprising how much decanting this needed, but turned out as good as it always is.

Needed time out of the bottle to blow off the alcohol heat. Tannins very soft and well integrated. Enjoyable once fully open with a full body and round mouthfeel. Finish is uneven- long on the tar note more than any other. Good without being exceptional. This is still a youthful Barbaresco- no tertiary notes at all.
Edit:- a month on I often think about this bottle- such a solid showing at a sensible price for a 24 year old wine. Not sure the review above does this wine justice. Great quality- even if slightly understated. I need to try this from a great vintage!

PnP. Very good showing, fully mature though still very much in its preferred window. Little to no sign of age on the medium ruby core. Soil, plum, the occasional barn note, some sage and forest, etc. Lovely medium/med+ body with exceptional balance and good+ persistence. A joy. Hard to believe I paid just $22 on release; way over-delivered that on that. Easily highly recommended

Off the list at Enoteca Turi. Supposedly 50% Sangiovese from the 2016 vintage (amongst others).
Gorgeous nose of perfumed spiced plum, bright cherry, mint and thyme.
Tangy spicy palate with a really lovely sapid streak. Still elegant and lifted and tannins silky and soft. Sad this is so rare and expensive.

Dry and elegant. The perfect foil for massive ribeyes on Easter. Limited nose on opening, this wine opened its charm offensive about an hour in. Cedar and a touch of leather underscored fine, but grippy tannings. Red fruits of cherry and dark berry, a touch astringent rather than fresh but in an elegant, I'm made to pair with a steak kind of way.

2012 Cascina Chicco Barolo Riserva Ginestra Nebbiolo
PnP; ready if not fully mature. This producer can be heavy-handed at times; a bit too modern for many tastes, including my own. However, these early versions of Barolo Cru seem to be in a much more classic mold. I recently opened a 2010, and now this 2012, and both showed a pale, clear garnet as opposed to anything deep red/dark. The nose (for both) was just lovely, with textbook aromas of fruit front and center, and any notion of too much oak are unfounded, at least for these two examples. I have three left that I'll drink in the coming ten years. This is an elegant, medium-bodied wine with very fine, ripe tannins, that's approaching a tertiary stage, but clearly not there yet. Having served this at cellar temp, the 14,5% abv was totally integrated. A nice surprise. recommended

Approachable, I find this (no surprise, it's Produttori) really speaks to the vintage's characteristics. Very pretty aromas, a full set of flavors and textures. This is a case buy(++?) for those looking for a quality cellar defender. Some purists might balk at first, but this wine is that new shoe that feels like a favorite old shoe in no time, and I think in time, there'll be lots of happy campers. Might be at its best in the short and mid-term as there's just so much to appreciate already. A joy. highly recommended

This wine, while extremely over-oaked, is also extremely easy to love. It's got the fruit intensity levels turned up eleven, but it in check with the structure, acid, and tannic backbone of this wine. That balance has certainly served this bottle well. Floral, musky aromas abide and swirl around the oak vanillin and coconut impressions. The wine is heavy bodied but again balanced. No problem with alcohol here. Very lovely, cabernet like fruit qualities. Hard not to like this.

Slow oxed and then into a decanter. The cork looks brand new. Not even saturated a little. Dark crimson with no bricking at all. A fresh smell of cherries and chocolate, dry fruits, some candied fruits and baking spices - like in a fruit cake. Very alive and like my other bottles on the lean side. Last nights 2010 just shows more full fruit. Nice drink but just doesn’t have the volume and flesh of a riper vintage. I’m not sure if it’s going to improve but it will surely hold for another 10-15 years if stored properly. It’s not a blow back your hair type, but a working man’s Brunello. Better with my beef stew. I really like Fuligni and every other vintage from 1997 thru 2015 are just better made wines.

Really? This can still be found for under $50?! That's crazy considering what's inside the bottle - on PnP, but also considering its cellaring potential. Medium+ body, perfectly judged oak expression, very fine-grained, sweet tannins, etc. This is letting you know just how great it is while at the same time, if you're listening, can hear just how good it's going to be, too. I've gone through a few of mine too quickly by some measures, yet I have zero regret; it may shut down, and I'm going to choose to live in the moment, the future being a quite uncertain thing. Slow-O two hours. A solid showing for what's now defined by many as a value wine. Contextually, of course, that's true. Sigh. In the old days of cellartracker it wasn't that uncommon to stumble on a wine that had thus far eluded the database, especially if you often drink off the beaten path. But as the site has matured, such an event increasingly became a rarity, and I don't think I've entered a new wine in a few years.

Imagine then my surprise with today's specimen, which is apparently so obscure that even the importer doesn't list the grapes, and I only found them on a hopefully reliable retail site in France. It's actually a blend of 80% piedirosso and 20% aglianico, if you can believe them.

The color is a pretty pale cherry with purple highlights. largely transparent. The nose is initially delicate and I find if I sniff at the rim vs. deep draughts there are delightful lifted blue fruits with floral underpinnings, followed by plum and cherry as I nose around a bit. It's at best medium-bodied, with a lovely initial entry full of red fruits, flowers and crushed stone, finishing with an acidic tang, cracked black pepper and telltale bitterness, not that I'm any expert on piedirosso. The tannins are persistent but relatively mild, although there's plenty of acid keeping things juicy. A lively 12.5% makes it rewarding right out of the cellar.

Very cool wine, and fun to be here first. Good for 3-5 years, just be conscious of the bitter finish if that's not your thing.

That said, from the first sip until the final one, my mind suggested that by letting this rest for another few years, the game may have changed a bit for the better as this will likely reveal some cards that are currently being held close to the vest. 1/29/24, 11:08 AM - '17 and '18 are red-headed stepchildren of '16, and yet my favorite producers did some things in those vintages that I really appreciate. I'm guessing your favorite producers managed to do the same. One example: a recent '17 Barolo Classico was fantastic from first to last taste; it well exceeded expectations. It would have been a shame if I'd missed out on it.

  • Tim Heaton commented:

1/29/24, 11:57 AM - Rick, I'd say look and see if there are wines still available from either of those vintages beginning with your favorite (Nebbiolo) producers in Le Langhe. If none are available, see if you can find some from similar producers. Our palates may not align on Barolo/Barbaresco/Roero/Alto Piemonte/Valtellina, and so go with what you know.

Growers like: Ar. Pe. Pe., Valfaccenda, E. Grasso, Podere e Cantina Oddero, Principiano, Voghera, Albano, Olek Bondonio, etc., are but a few that come to mind. It could be fun building a six pack from a store that's still got a decent selection - you may even find a new fav producer, who knows?? Enjoy the hunt.

fwiw, the '17 Barolo wines I've really been happy with have been the Classico from: Margherita Otto and Burlotto. Don't think I've opened any others yet. Maybe I'll remedy that now that I think about it.

There's a delicate note of rose and soil that's in each glass. 'Reliable' my brief note (very casual setting, limited chicken scratch) says, and it was reliable until the final pour some two hours later. I like that there's a combination of concrete and Slavonian botti, at least as it pertains to this finished wine. Tiziano was taken too young. PnP that's completely ready. This has passed its apogee, and is on the slow, down hill slide, so best to drink up, I think. Med(-)>med-bodied, with cool acidity that ever so slightly overwhelms what's left of the red fruit core (if this bottle is representative). Lovely soil and alpine notes complete the picture. PnP tasted non-blind over two hours. A chocolate Hostess cake is ready to go once opened, so is processed chocolate pudding, and so was this Bard. This is a big pool of chocolatey, over-ripe black and blue fruit, with a thick coat of vanilla, some carob, and molten Nestle's morsels - for good measure, I assume. Not having had tried this vintage before, I gave it a go; I'm always willing to see what's new, what may have changed. After four sips over forty minutes, I rinsed my (half-full) glass and moved on to the next wine in the lineup. No doubt this is a great cocktail, to some, but I can't think that this was meant to go with food (no doubt I'll get a lot of "with steak" comments), or at least not the type of food I prefer. And since I never have wine without food, The Bard and I aren't likely to cross paths again anytime soon. I reckon some twenty five+ years ago, in a social setting of some sort, I'd have actually finished that first glass, perhaps to fit in. Or for a quick sugar fix. So fast forward, and it's clear that's no longer a worry. I don't. Fit in. With the Realm crew, at least. If this is your jam, then this is another great vintage of the Bard, enjoy.

While not generally a fan of drinking young Barolo, we have a few of these and decided to check in on what is purportedly an early-drinking vintage. Decanted early morning, enjoyed 12 hours later out of Zalto burgundy stems. There was a very noticeable flowering just after the first glass, like peony blossom tea in a glass pot. Reticent aromas are the prelude to an elegant core of strawberry fruit & liqueur, gently buttressed by tannins. Rather lovely.

I’ve been so looking forward to experiencing one of my bottles of the 2018 Margherita Otto and decided tonight was the night since it was -17°F here in Omaha. While a relative new-comer as far as Barolo producers are concerned, Alan’s approach leans heavily towards the traditional. Until now, his Barolo remains a blend of Nebbiolo from different communes in an effort to make a more complete expression of the zone. The first few vintages incorporated fruit from Monteforte, Serralunga and Castiglione Falletto. This vintage was the first to incorporate some fruit from the Vignane MGA in Barolo.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over the course of three days. There was some evolution but it was consistent, with no noticeable dip in enjoyment. The 2018 pours a deep ruby with a translucent core and a slightly garnet rim; medium+ viscosity with no staining of the tears. On the nose, youthful with a pleasant mix of red and black fruits: bright Morello cherry, strawberries, raspberries, Marionberries, pomegranate, roses, dried herbs, tar, orange peel and dry gravelly earth. On the palate, bone dry with high tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is long with a touch of anise and red rope licorice thing. Just lovely and definitely a producer I'll be following. Drink now with some patience and over the next 20 years. Fewer than 4000, 750ml bottles were produced.

This only had a few hours of air in the decanter (my mistake) and could have used the whole day. It's a beautiful Barolo in the making that needs more time or air to fully hit its stride. Even in 1997, there is a refinement and elegance to the structure, which is firm, but has a degree of suaveness that can be so texturally complex. Flavorwise this totally classic with florals, leather and asphalt accents to the plum and black cherry fruit. Upside from here.

This bottle of '15 Bartolo showed considerably better than I recall the wine on release. The wine was expressive and quite light bodied and elegant for a Nebbiolo, so it's no crime to open a bottle today. I don't see this being super long-lived, but there should be another decade of positive development ahead if you prefer a bit of secondary development, which has yet to occur.

The nose was beautifully perfumed with sweet red berry fruit, blood orange, red roses, and sweet spices. For lack of a better term, it was immediately on the nose a bit of a Burgundian, lighter Barolo, with beautiful purity of fruit. On the palate, the wine is medium to light in body, quite ethereal with red roses, blood orange fruit, and hard candy like red berry fruit, with attractive inner sweetness. The acidity level is medium to high, which gives this wine a freshness / vibrancy I've found many '15s to lack. The tannins are quite refined already, although with air and as the wine warmed up they became a bit more noticeable.

Wild berries on the nose. On the palte i find there is a cool fruit carrying everything else over and persistent on the finish. Some cool and brambly cassis. There is power and freshness in this as well as good complexity. Northernmost Nebbs are definitely worth watching

PnP that got better until the last sip some two hours later. Another winning vintage/effort for this house that's becoming more well-known by the day, it seems; rightly so. Med>med+ body, lively red fruits, perfectly ripe, fine-grained tannins, with plenty of cool acidity, and soil/place notes in all corners. If you're a fan, best to buy a few more in this vintage, because it's going to be hard to keep in the cellar. Picked a few up for €22 in Lucca, and knew right then that I'd regret not taking all they had on the shelf, but I brought back too much wine as it is, so there's that. Drink now with some aeration, or hold for another 5-10 years, as you prefer. highly recommended

Wow! I have always been somewhat skeptical to the aging potential of Brunello in general, but some times I get some pleasent surprises. Like this one. From magnum. Deep brown with a ruby core, clearly aged. The nose is just fantastic, mixing fruity tones like dark cherries and plums with a tertiary tones of tobacco, warm earth, as well as an iron/steel tone. Complex. Full bodied attack, dry tannins attack the palate quite quickly, but that is soon overwhelmed by some nice sweet tobacco-tinted plum flavors. Fine acidity to balance the fruit, and fine grained tannins complete a picture of a great, well aged Brunello, probably at its apex right now. Drink or keep for at least a decade if you have this wine in magnum.

Smelled like a damp musty basement from the get go and unfortunately never came around over several hours in a decanter. Rather dull color as well. Rich fruit on the palate though. A bummer, since the previous bottle was excellent.

Profoundly good; on PnP, and better with each glass. Clearly built with impressive structure, there's already a fair amount of complexity and length. That said, I think I'd prefer to see this understated gem in another 2-4 years, at which time I expect this will have much more to say. highly recommended

11/22/20, 3:16 PM - About 20 months ago, I opened a 2005 for a buyer for a natural wine store in Germany. My bottle was shot, all the fruit was gone, but tons of acid remained. Personally, I think it might have recovered on day 2, but it was at a dinner near Dusseldorf, so I'll never know. That said, because of the winemaking growing/process there, I think they're all at their best within 5-8 years from vintage. Not to say some won't last, but rather to say I'll open them when the odds are in their favor. Not all wines need to age to get better, as you know.

Drank out of 375. Brassy or almost copper color. Nose wasn’t initially auspicious. From a distance, nose is honey, cigar box, and tropical fruit or citrus. Up close, airplane glue notes come on prominently. Then I took a sip. Great balance of acid and sugar. Pineapple and concentrated earthy-honey with a finish that lasts forever. As it breathes, it evolves into soft dried apricots and a touch of cedar. My initial thought on pairing was crème brûlée but I think blue cheese would be better given the richness and concentration. Perfectly mature and I see little point with aging further. Half an hour after the glass was empty, I sniffed it again and only soft dried apricots remained, which I took as a sign a very nice Sauternes

My first exposure to a serious Italian PB. I was surprised how complete this was, all the structure of a world class white wine. A light golden color and a driblet of reduction in the nose that was flattering. The texture was reminiscent of a white Burg, all silky and shit. Lemon curd, persimmons, straw, waxiness, and a really nice backbone of acidity to support it all. Long finish to keep you contemplating the next sip. Had this paired with a crispelle of iberico pork, and a sweetbreads and chanterelle dish. Nailed both of them. I need to put some of this in my cellar. Thanks Bob.

Beautiful to look at, smell and taste. Surprisingly young appearance with a dark core and magenta rim. Paints the glass red a brilliant red with a lush and seductive feel and flavor. Modern in style. Smells of spice, new leather, menthol and macerated raspberry. Just a hint of the telltale (to me) black tea of Tuscan sangiovese. In the mouth, it is beautifully balanced, spicy and even regal. Flavors of raspberry, soft and ripe cherries - both black and red - and balsam wood with a barely discernible taste of leather. Vivid acidity that revs up a finish that is cut only slightly short by fine tannins that clamp down and linger. This is truly a gorgeous and memorable wine that will hold for years. But it’s also so terrific now that waiting will be difficult.

Very, very good. This is a label I buy every year without hesitation; this year, I'm tempted to get more than the six I already have. It's that much of a winner, already. And as fans of this wine/variety know, it's only getting better from here (most of my bottles, from Burlotto and others, rest for 3-6 years). Medium-bodied, crunchy, very fine tannins, and a cool, earthy finish. Such a good year for this bottling, wow. 14,0% abv. Buy all you can find. Age some. highly recommended

A very rare grape indeed. Lees than 5ha grown globally, and all of that in the capable hands of Marco Marrocco at Palazzo Tronconi.
Light red in colour with a nose of dirty red cherries. Quite light on the palate, but with high acidity and strong fruit flavour a very inticing drink for mid week.

Nose is pickled meat, feet, tapenade, sweet oak. Palate is briny, meaty, feety, cranberry. Medium acid and shortish finish. After an hour picks up some weight, but not much structure or depth.

Grilled a steak that completely overwhelmed this wine. My bad I guess, but Syrah is often a grilled steak pairing for us.

Fell apart into a metallic mess after 2-3 hours open. Never have I had a young wine fall apart this quickly.

purchased on release, pristine cork w/barely any penetration, actually quite remarkable; clear burnished garnet, minimal sediment; lovely restrained aromatics, on point Pauillac nose; elegant, refined & restrained; long & classic.

good example to show to mixed experIence audience. very stylish, one of best '95 for pure enjoyment this evening.

seared lamb tenderloin w/crushed coriander, rosemary, garlic & pomegranate molasses, ayubia blanco beans w/lambshank & red wine ragout; braised turnip greens & hakurei turnips w/cider vinegar

Another jewel of a wine. Utterly hypnotic nose, delicately perfumed. It's glorious in *every* way. This is a super serious wine. What you'd imagine rubies would taste like if they had flavour. The tension, tautness and sheer intensity is really something to behold. The purity and lofty, ethereal beauty is unforgettable.

Fabio Alessandria, the winemaker, says the 2020s aren't for the really long haul as much as the 2019s. He thinks they are more aromatic and fresher and would drink them at 5-10 years. He sees "wild strawberries" in them.

This is truly wonderful. Lifted, exotic, ethereal, and spicy on the heady bouquet, with a layered, garrigue sweetness on the palate. The texture is silky and whatever structure it had in its youth is fully resolved, but it is otherwise just ascending to the peak of its powers. This is a clean, stable, flaw-free Musar, but with enough VA and complexity to still taste like the real McCoy. Easily the best Musar I’ve had, which covers the 97-05 vintages.

Tasting yet another top Riserva from my favourite producer from Valtellina. Made from single varietal of Nebbiolo, locally referred to as Chiavennasca, aged for 5 years in big barrels, stainless steel and bottle. Medium ruby colour, garnet hue. Intense aroma of cherries, dried rose petals, tobacco, cranberries, toasted oak. Medium body, smoky and vibrant, slightly less elegant than Inferno, though still smooth and delightful with lively structure, high acidity and medium+ very refined tannins.

I prefer them to the nascent '20 and '21s I've sampled; 19s remind me very much of the classic '13s, fwiw.
